Response from Daniel:

Theo obviously did not read any of the description provided in the listing. It clearly states that I have 2 other guest rooms and that the common areas are all shared. The pictures are completely accurate, and that is why I have received so many good reviews. Most people choose my place because they are interested in seeing my mini museum filled with interesting things! Perhaps that isn't Theo's style, but again, he could have ascertained a feel for the space by reading the previous reviews and looking at the pictures. I am not a minimalist. I like my space to be filled with creative things!

There were a few toolboxes next to the backdoor, which were there because I was using said tools to renovate the bathroom. There was a pipe upstairs that had burst, causing water damage in the bathroom ceiling and the shower stall of my bathroom below. I notified my landlord to fix the repairs, but he didn't respond, so I took it upon myself to repair everything. As of this weekend(September 20th 2015), I will be finished with the repairs. The whole shower has been rebuilt and is brand new. The bathroom ceiling is repaired and painted.

Theo never mentioned any problems, other than the toilet, which he clogged taking a massive dump and using half a roll of toilet paper in one sitting. Seriously, who does that?!? Regardless, I grabbed a plunger and it was fixed in less than 10 seconds.

Apparently, Theo has never used a plunger before(it was sitting right next to the toilet). It is a brand new toilet, installed earlier this year with a dual flush button mechanism on the top, which he may not have been familiar with using. the left button is for liquid waste, the right button is for solid waste. Quite simple. He could have asked for instructions if he didn't understand how it worked.

My apartment and neighborhood are incredibly quiet, so I have no idea what sort of racket Theo seemed plagued by. There is a window fan in the room that he could have turned off when he went to sleep. There is a second oscillating fan on the desk that he could have left on or turned off to his liking. Both are quiet and have 3 speed settings. Apparently he does not know how to turn on or off basic appliances.

As for the darkness, yes, it is a basement apartment(clearly stated in the description). We are only half way underground, so there are 9 windows, located in various rooms of the apartment. His bedroom has a medium sized window, which lets in plenty of diffused light. There is a nice plant thriving in that window, which it could not do if there were no sunlight! Theo was never home during the day, so his complaint about darkness doesn't make any sense. He was only here to sleep and shower during the late night and leave in the morning.

I suspect that Theo's disappointment stems from the fact that English is not his native language. I tried to communicate with him on several occasions, but he just seemed to nod in agreement. Right after he clogged the toilet, he told me that the "water closet" was broken. It took several minutes for me to try and understand what he meant, but right after, I fixed the problem in 10 seconds.

Airbnb provides a translation button right on the website, and free translation sites abound on the internet, so there is literally no excuse for Theo's flagrant disregard for reading the description of the living space. To have him complain after the fact and leave a bad review resulting from his own negligence, is just insulting! Theo, please read the translated description of my listing. You will see that I was honest and upfront about all the details of staying here!

On a side note, I told Theo he could use my Espresso machine to make himself coffee anytime. I told him how to use it properly and explained all the steps. Regardless of my clear instructions and the instruction manual sitting right on top of the machine, Theo left the Espresso machine running ALL day(at least 9 hours), which drained the entire water supply and ruined the heating element and motor. The machine cost $600 to purchase, and now I have to pay $250 for it to be repaired due to his negligence.

He seems like a nice enough fellow, and I'm sure that he means well, but as a guest, he is completely clueless as to how airbnb works. He never let me know what time he would be arriving, so I wasted an entire day waiting for him, despite the fact that I messaged him several days in advance to arrange check in.
