El Arbol (the tree) is the creation of Jan Hein (designer and creator of the lodge) and Marjolein (counsellor and international marketer) from the Netherlands. We want to offer our guests comfort while at the same time they are being totally immerged in nature. The idea is to offer guests a pure, private and personal experience. We are nature lovers ourselves and we would like to show you and your loved ones nature as it can still be found on this planet. Enjoy nature without compromising on comfort.
We believe that the natural beauty in the lay of the land is best left as it is, especially if one of your goals is seeing animals. This theory is proven by the abundant wildlife that visits our 16+ acre property every day. We continue to let nature work her magic. Landscaping is done only around houses and common areas. We have a natural path through our rainforest that we keep clean and accessible; the rest of the jungle remains untouched. Outdoor lighting is romantic but restricted to what is necessary for orientation, safety & security.
El Árbol philosophy: Our philosophy is to create a unique and personalized jungle experience in the midst of complete comfort. Feel the mental and physical wellbeing that nature provides. We also place extra emphasis on being eco friendly and globally conscious. You as our guest take part in this process as 5% of your lodging fees will be donated to local charities.
The houses are designed with style, the immediate environment, comfort and safety in mind.
Our houses are beautifully and interestingly designed. They are built on poles so you have the feeling you you are living and sleeping in the treetops and have round shapes, rich colors and exciting features. Every house has its own jacuzzi from which you can see the jungle and its wildlife. The houses have a fully equipped kitchen, master bedroom, large living room with an extra sleeping sofa/bed, luxury bathroom, safe, air conditioning (at extra cost) and all beds have the best orthopedic mattresses with good quality mosquito nets. The houses have a fully equipped kitchen and beds with the best orthopedic mattresses.
Because of their design and the protection from the rainforest's canopy, the houses have a comfortable, cool climate. The houses have glass windows to keep insects out, although it would amaze you how many days and nights you will sit outside on your porch without being bothered by any of these little creatures to fully enjoy the sounds of the jungle. The houses are cleaned for you 3 times a week.
Its an amazing experience, don't miss it. we hope to may welcome you soon.

My fiancé and I had an amazing time at El Arbol! Marjolein was great with suggestions of things to do & places to eat, and gave us our privacy for the week (& she lent us some iPod speakers for our stay!). The house was amazing, exactly as described on Airbnb. We spent some great evenings just relaxing on the hammock on the deck & listening to the sounds of the jungle. I highly recommend it to anyone!!!!
El Arbol was the last stop on our 2-week honeymoon, and it could not have been a better experience. Marilyn was always available to make sure we were comfortable and had some great suggestions for local attractions. The jungle house was, of course, amazing. I think it was the closest thing you can get to living directly in the jungle without compromising on creature comforts like plumbing and a giant comfy bed. Our favorite parts of El Arbol were the porch, the keyhole door, and the house gecko :)
What a fun, whimsical jungle house! We used the hot tub several times and Marilyn booked all of our amazing excursions so all we had to do was have fun! A true jungle experience while still being completely comfortable.
We stayed at El Arbol for a week and it was one of the most memorable vacations we had in a long time. The bungalow we stayed in was a gem, beautifully made and beautifully located. Surrounded by the forest, it is very private and restful. Marylin and her husband were welcoming, helpful and discreet. They put us in touch with a wonderful local guide who took us on a four hour tour in the jungle. He was extremely knowledgeable and obviously a nature lover. If you decide to get a guide (which I highly recommend) make sure to ask Marylin to put you in touch with Abel! She also helped us organize a dolphin watching tour that was marvelous.
We we so glad to have made the choice of El Arbol rather than a hotel. We spent our evenings relaxing in the hammock on the balcony listening to the sounds of the forest.
Everything about this trip was wonderful. Manzanillo is a quiet little town with really nice people. The beach is beautiful with great snorkeling. We couldn't recommend El Arbol enough!! Thank you Marylin and Jon.
Absolutely amazing...my partner and I stayed here at the end of a very busy Intrepid tour that started in Mexico. We wanted some time out and a chance to explore Costa Rica by ourselves. We stayed here for three nights and it was perfect.
When we arrived we were greated by poison arrow frogs with bright colours, the place has a real jungle feel to it and you are really in touch with nature. Marylin was so welcoming and helpful, she also gave us some great suggestions about places to eat and things to do.
The house is just gorgeous...filled with windows to see out at the amazing view, the kitchen is well equiped (there is even a blender so grab some excellent costa rica bananas, honey and icecream and make some smothies!!) The bed is the most comfortable of any bed ever! And there is a huge net around it to make you feel secure from mozies/bugs. One thing I was worried about was the bugs and critters before we arrived; however there was none in the house! considering the location this is quite amazing!! So i felt totally safe from insects!
I want to go back to costa rica just to stay here! Totally peacful and relaxing, one of the best places i have stayed anywhere. Could not recommended it more highly- you will love this place!
I just can comfirm all the postiv aspects that the other travellers wrote - so just some words in german (as I know that Marilyn will understand them):
Danke an El Arbol
We stayed for 1 week at El Arbol in early August and had a great time. Marilyn and John were wonderful hosts, extremely attentive and helpful but never intrusive or over bearing. The two guesthouses are set back into a remote lush tropical landscape full of wildlife including Howler monkeys which we would hear every morning at sunrise. The house is beautifully designed and equipped with all essentials. The jacuzzi tub and bathroom was really a big treat and a luxury in this jungle setting. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the basic essentials to cook your own meals which we did quite frequently during our stay.
Although the house is well equipped with all essentials for living it does still have that cabin/outdoors feeling to it, it's truly an oasis and getaway into a simple lifestyle where everyday you are interacting with nature and impressive wilderness of Manzanillo. So if you're afraid of insects (we saw beautiful grasshoppers and large variety of flying insects we've never seen before) or are looking for a modern hotel type of place this may not be the right fit for you. The property is a lush and vibrant jungle full of wildlife. The house was in good, clean condition and the maid service came every 3 days to change linens and clean. We did encounter a great deal of humidity since we were there in rainy season, this caused all of our linens to be damp. However, Marilyn was so kind and accommodating to our issue with the humidity and suggested the use of AC to help dehumidify the house. We also think if we had kept the windows open more it wouldn't have gotten so humid.
The rain we encountered during our stay persisted all day for most of our stay which was a bit frustrating as we would have liked more time to enjoy the incredible beaches. Never the less, we really enjoyed our stay in the wild nature and highly recommend El Arbol to couples or families traveling in the region. It is really a unique place with little to no comparison at all in that area because of it's remote location, the amenities the house is equipped with and the great hosts who run the property.
We'd recommend 4WD, especially in rainy season. Lidia's Place is Puerto Viejo was our favorite restaurant, Lazy Mon's happy hour with live music was always fun and Cahuita National Park took our breath away- some of the most beautiful wild beaches we've ever seen.
Beautiful house, amazing location, very helpful hosts, total relaxation! If you come to Costa Rica, be sure to stay here!
My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights, which were the highlight of our 3-week C.R. holiday. This was the best, most unique accommodation I have ever stayed in and the design and attention to detail in the house is excellent.
This is the perfect place to unwind, enjoy nature, and relax. Being awoken by howler monkeys is the best alarm clock! We enjoyed sitting on the porch hammock & swing morning, afternoon, and night watching the passing butterflies, monkeys, birds, moths, geckos, etc. The immediate surroundings are great to explore for frogs, spiders, insects, etc.
Marilyn helped us book a tour via a local guide, which was excellent. There are plenty of activities in the area, but we highly recommend the 5-hour nature tour. This was the best tour we took in C.R. and saw all of the exotic plants and flowers the area has to offer, plus frogs, monkeys, sloths, snakes, butterflies, spiders, crabs, etc. Our personal, knowledgeable tour guide minus the large tourist groups meant a LOT of beautiful nature!
We did not have a car, but this was no problem (Marilyn can suggest transport to/from your location, which was very helpful & easy). The house is within easy walking distance to beach, cafes/restaurants, and a small kiosk where you can shop for groceries (if you come with your own via car, we recommend stopping at the grocery store in Puerto Viejo, as it's bigger). The kitchen was perfect for our needs (fridge, stove, utensils, blender, etc.). Making smoothies with fresh tropical fruit was a real treat. (Not to mention the beautiful bathroom with jacuzzi!)
If you are a nature lover, in need of relaxation, and/or want to try something new, definitely stay here. If (or rather, when) we return to Costa Rica, El Arbol will be the first thing we book.
Thank you, Marilyn & Jan, for being such helpful, informative & welcoming hosts before & during our stay!
El Arbol consists of two houses set the jungle less than 1 km from Manzinillo.
It is run by a lovely couple (Marilyn & Jon) who looked after us very well.
We were driven here by Wilson from Coati Tours ( much recommended) and as we didn't have transport, Marilyn organised golf cart hire for us at US$50 per day. This was a great way to get around.
Nice coffee is provided, but you will need to bring all food and drink.
There are many restaurants/sodas close by, so we didn't really do any cooking on site. Grocery stores are around.
Be prepared to be woken early by howler monkeys! and enjoy the lush greenery around you.
When it was time to leave, Marilyn helped with our transfer several kilometres down the road. She also kindly did a load of washing for us $10 (two adults and two children generate a fair amount of laundry!).
El Arbol is a nice relaxing place to spend a couple of days when exploring the southern Caribbean coast.
