Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • We shared the positive experience of other guests - a comfortable stay in a surprisingly spacious and recently renovated private attic, well situated for walking to the Blackfriars theater, restaurants, antique store (including Ellen's), the farmers market and more. We liked the friendly hosts, easy check in, and welcoming goodies (including wine and real glasses in which to appreciate it).

So we'll add some nice features less often mentioned... The quiet (except for a few bird chirps), an extremely comfortable couch, wonderful hot water, an almost silent AC, lovely views from every window and our upstairs patio, great wifi, soft towels, good lighting, ground coffee and cream, lots of wall plugs. And an elegant wash basin in the bathroom.

  • Ellen and Lou were wonderful hosts and the attic apartment was better than the photos. Lots of space and spotless! The location was perfect - we walked to everything. Great restaurants and shops down the street as well as the Blackfriar Theater which we highly recommend! A perfect long weekend getaway.

  • My husband and I enjoyed our 2 night stay in Ellen & Lou's attic suite. We were greeted by Lou and their lovely greyhound. We opened the wine and relaxed on the private deck with views over the rooftops and hillsides. We saw a play at Black Friars theater and had a fantastic dinner at Aoili on Saturday night. When we returned to Witz End, Ellen invited us in and shared the wonderful stories and photos of the renovation process of their beautiful old house. On Sunday we attended commencement at UVA (only 45 minutes away). We had to head home after our nice breakfast at Cranberries Monday morning, but we'll plan to spend more time in Staunton next time. I would highly recommend this to anyone who doesn't mind 3 flights of stairs for the benefit of a well-appointed suite with views over Staunton.

  • My husband and were in Staunton, Virginia for a bike (road bike) week in the magnificent Blue Ridge Parkway. We were warmly welcomed by Ellen and Lou in their beautiful historic house. They made sure that all our needs were fulfilled (a bottle of wine and bagels were waiting for us in the fridge...) and provided many advices on where to go in town. The apartment is really comfortable, which is a blessing after a long day riding our bikes in the mountains!
The house is located in a quiet portion of the main street of the city, but only minutes away from the cinema, as well as from many restaurants and shops.
We had a wonderful week in Staunton, Ellen and Lou are the best hosts ever!

  • We had a wonderful experience in Staunton, thanks to Ellen and Lou's hospitality and beautiful space! We can't say enough good things about both the lodging and their willingness to accommodate a few requests. Do yourself a favor and stay here; you won't regret it!

  • We really enjoyed this spacious attic apartment. It was decorate well and included everything we needed for our long weekend, such as the kitchenette. It was very close to the historic downtown; we were able to walk to everything we wanted to see or do. We didn't have much interaction with the hosts, but they were nice and made check in and check out very easy. We would definitely stay here again.

  • We had a great weekend in Staunton at Ellen & Lou's charming attic suite. The space was gorgeous - tastefully decorated and brilliantly laid out. They had thought of everything you might need to be comfortable, from bath robes and an electric blanket to keep you toasty warm to coffee and english muffins in the morning as well as bottle of wine to enjoy in the evening. The location is also ideal. We were able to walk to great restaurants, antique shops and the Blackfriars theater :) A perfect getaway for city dwellers! We will definitely be back.

  • Place was exactly as pictured and advertised. Very close to many of Staunton's one of a kind shops and restaurants. Ellen and Lou were great hosts and left a nice gift of wine and snacks. We will stay here again in the future.

  • This was our first time using airbnb and we couldn't have had a better experience. Ellen & Lou, were just wonderful! They were more than accommodating and we arrived to a bottle of wine and breakfast goodies the left for us. Their home is spectacular and our suite was very clean, cozy, and charming. When you see all of the details in the decor and restoration you can really see just how much pride Ellen & Lou take in their home and in their guests. The location was perfect, it was nice not to really have to drive much at all, the only time we got in our car was to go horse back riding at Star B Stables and to see the Frontier Culture Museum (highly recommend them both) and even so it was no more than a 10 minute drive to each. We walked to everything in beautiful historic downtown Staunton, stopping at all of the shops, taking in all of the art and culture that this vibrant town has to offer. Ellen also owns an antique shop on Beverley St... it's definitely worth stopping in to see all of the old treasures for sale. My husband and I had a few must-dos on our itinerary, such as glass blowing at Sunspots Studios, having a beer or two at RedBeard Brewing Co, eating at Shenandoah Pizza, visiting the Frontier Culture Museum, and a trail ride at Star B Stables. There were so many things to stumble upon as well, such as the Farmers' Market. We bought some delicious food from some very hospitable vendors. We came to Staunton to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary, and it was the most perfect place to spend such a special occasion. Even though we managed to see and do so much in just two days, there is still so much we want to see and do in Staunton... I guess we will just have to plan another trip down to this beautiful town and of course stay at Ellen & Lou's fabulous home again. Thanks Ellen & Lou! You were wonderful hosts, we couldn't be happier with our experience.

  • Located just 2 blocks away from Staunton's happening main street, Ellen and Lou's home is a great jumping off point for exploring the town and the larger Shenandoah Valley. Ellen and Lou have clearly taken a great effort to restore and maintain their beautiful home. The attic apartment is very spacious and clean and exactly as pictured. The hosts even left a few goodies in the fridge for our stay. Their welcoming and the apartment's charm are reason enough I make a visit. I would definitely stay here again if I make another trip to the area.

Originally from New York we settled in Northern Virginia where we raised our 2 sons. After finding a Cabin on a Mountain in the Shenandoah Valley we decided to 'Semi-Retire' in Beautiful Staunton. We purchased our 1844 home 'Witz End' in 2004 where Lou has a Healing Practice and Ellen has just finished the restoration of our home. Ellen is a Real Estate Agent, owns the Staunton Antiques Center and is an amateur photographer and Lou plays Native American Flute leads Flute & Drum Circles. We are major Foodies and in March 2013 our younger son received 2 1/2 Stars from The Washington (email hidden) Kitchen' in Charlottesville, VA. Our older son is studying Improv in Los Angeles.
