About this listing
For the dates from October 1st through October 16th, there is a minimum stay of seven nights.
Banyan Tree Sanctuary is located on 3.2 acres in a very upscale neighborhood (Kona Heaven) on the Big island of Hawaii.
The MangoView room looks out onto our giant banyan tree and two very large, old mango trees, thus the name. The room faces east, so you get lots of morning sunshine. There are two entrances to the room, a sliding glass door with a small screened in private lanai with wicker loveseat, and also a door that opens onto the hallway. There are 2 twin beds,a night stand with 2 lamps, a ceiling fan and light, and rugs on the tiled floor. There is also a closet with hangers to hang your clothes. All linens are provided, as well as robes to wear while you are here, to enjoy the Jacuzzi, sauna and pool.
This room can only accommodate two people maximum. You share a community kitchen and a full bath with a few other guests. There are over 300 fruit trees on the property, as well as an organic vegetable garden, and you are allowed to eat this fruit, within reason, while you are our visitor. There is a $10 charge for a large basket of veggies, based on what is available at the time.
Our fee is $67 per night for 2 guests, plus 13.42% Hawaii accommodation tax (due upon arrival). There is a one time $50 cleaning fee, and during the Summer months, if you book for one week, you get one free day; stay for 7 nights, pay for 6.
We are a vegetarian community, and we ask that while you stay here, you refrain from cooking or eating any beef, lamb, chicken, fish, turkey or pork products, including any type of bacon. We are also a NO SMOKING facility, so we ask that you please do not smoke in any part of Banyan Tree or on the grounds.
There is a lap pool that is salt-charged, (no chlorine) an ozonated hot tub (no chlorine) and an infra-red sauna that you can use, and property-wide wifi. There is also a 30' diameter 12-sided structure we call the Mother Ship that has a 70" big screen TV and a great DVD collection, (and subscriptions to Netflix streaming and Amazon Prime) and you can use it for yoga, meditation, or just hanging out.
We encourage you to look at the photos and inquire about any questions that you may have. Guests staying with us for two weeks get one free night's stay.
The closest beaches are a 15 minute drive from our door, and are in the yacht harbor area. One is a very nice snorkel beach, especially in the morning, the other is a turtle sanctuary with a broad expanse of white sand. One of the top ten beaches on the Big Island is only a 25 minute drive from our door, and that is Kua Bay, about 4.5 miles north of the airport. We have a limited supply of snorkels, masks, and boogie boards that you are free to use on a first come, first serve basis. We ask that you rinse off the equipment with fresh water when you return from the beach, and if there are several guests staying here at the same time, to give everyone a chance to use the equipment.
We provide various healing modalities; many styles of massage therapy, yoga, meditation, dietary guidelines, etc. and we can set up your dolphin tour experience/manta ray night dive as well. We are long-time residents of the Big Island and know many special places that we can direct you to. We are only a 20 minute drive to the airport. We strongly encourage renting a car, as we are quite remote from any stores or beaches, and you would need to drive to get to those locations. Taxi fees are prohibitive; if you are unable to rent a car, it's probably best that you choose another location.
Because we are a healing sanctuary and retreat space, and many people come to us for the peace, quiet, healing and tranquility that we are able to offer our guests, we have chosen to limit the ages of children that visit us to 12 years or older. We are simply not set up to accommodate families with younger children, and we apologize for that.
Come to Banyan Tree Sanctuary to experience a different level of peacefulness on your next Hawaiian vacation!
Everything on the property is available, most at no extra cost.
The only things that are extra are the massages, prepared smoothies and other food items, and the organic vegetables from the garden.
There is no washer/dryer service on property grounds.
Interaction with Guests
As little or as much as they require and are interested in.
This is an exceptionally beautiful part of the Kona side of the island, it is actually called Kona Heavens! We are in a very quiet and peaceful neighborhood and we are the very last house on a dead end road, so we truly are a sanctuary. There are wonderful places to stroll right out of your door, and it is a very safe neighborhood.
No public transportation available in our area. It is essential that you rent a car.
Other Things to Note
At 1100', we are a little cooler than downtown, and get more rain, so bring an extra sweater and a poncho/umbrella. There is always sun to be found somewhere on the island, but it may not be right here. A headlamp/flashlight is also a good idea, although we have extras if you forget yours. Also a sturdy pair of shoes to walk on the paths is a great idea.
We are a small group of people sharing a very special and unique property on the Big Island of Hawaii. Since some of the areas are shared; i.e. the main kitchen, the dining area and some living areas, we ask that you respect any and all common areas and pick up after yourself. This includes, but is not restricted to: wet towels, shoes, backpack, laptops and other electronic devices, clothes, etc. Certain areas are available on a simple reservation basis, such as the Mother Ship, by putting your name and time of requested use on a little whiteboard by the door.
We have quiet time from 9pm to 8am, which means you are welcome to use the jacuzzi, pool, or common spaces after 9pm, as long as you are respectful and quiet in your movements. Although there is no requirement to do so, if you feel moved to spend some time in the gardens watering or weeding, we always welcome that kind of energy.
We loved this place and Rae's hospitality! The property is better than the description and we had several pleasant surprises. Remote location (still close to action), fruit trees on the property, cleanliness, right amount of interaction with the host and the other guests to the extent of our desire, proximity to the lava tube close by - all are wonderful!
Very welcoming & beautiful home! It's pictures really don't do this place justice in just how lovely this location really is! Everything you could need is made available for your stay at the Tree Sancuary! Would absolutely stay here again. (:
The Banyan Tree was very clean and nicely tucked away from tourist areas. They provided a lot of very detailed information on the facility and also activities. The salt water pool, ozonated Jacuzzi and saunas were wonderful. The available beach equipment - snorkel gear, etc. was a nice surprise and the lava tube cave was a great adventure. One bit of advice for those planning a stay is to confirm produce availability before shopping for your meals. We didn't, and there were no veggies available for sale and fruit variety was limited. Our first meal was interesting, but we enjoyed it nonetheless.
This is a beautiful, peaceful retreat for nature lovers. The property was fairly open-air and the temperature was perfect throughout my stay. Bring natural (lavender, eucalyptus, etc.) bug spray if you aren't keen on insects. Guests share the bathroom, but I never had to wait for it. The pool is lovely and the hot tub provided some very welcome relaxation for me. Rae went out of his way to make me feel welcome. He left fresh fruit for me in the guest fridge for breakfast.
Crazy! Unbeliveable! Great!
Nice villa with pool and beautiful garden! Everything organized perfectly!
We stayed at Banyan Tree for 5 nights. It was kind of scary getting there on a tiny road and not really sure where we're going but once we got there it was worth it. The pictures do this place no justice, it was one of the most beautiful peaceful places I've ever been. Even though it's outside they do a really good job of keeping bugs out and we saw a minimal amount. We were able to roam the grounds and pick fruit (which was a first for us coming from the city). It was really a great experience and I suggest this place to anyone.
Lovely facilities. Welcoming, knowledgable, and considerate host. Basically the perfect place to stay in Kona wether you're there for the weekend or for weeks.

About the Host, Rae
I am the business manager of a beautiful piece of property in Kailua Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii, called Banyan Tree Sanctuary. I have traveled extensively in the US, and have spent time in every single state except for Alaska. I have also been to Canada, New Zealand and Fiji.
I am a compassionate vegan, and have been a massage therapist for over 30 years. I am a very strong advocate for compassion to all living things, and so choose not to inflict any suffering regarding my diet and lifestyle. Living on this property allows me to eat fresh ripe raw organic fruits and vegetables every single day, and I am incredibly grateful for that. To be able to go out in the morning and find ripe papayas, lilikoi, mango, and so much more, is a true gift. I am also a musician (percussion) and singer/songwriter. We have some drums and guitars at Banyan Tree Sanctuary, and our guests are always welcome to play these and join with any of our classes and events.
My motto is simple: love everyone, and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Life is way too short to spend any time doing anything else!
This property is very special, and even with professional pictures, you can't get the full impact of this place without actually staying here. We currently have seven spaces available, from rooms on the first floor to a deluxe, complete suite with it's own private kitchen area, bathroom and lanai. We look forward to having you as our guests!
