As of May 2012, there's been construction on the building next door, and although its not super loud, it does sometimes start at 730am and could go on till 4pm. There's an air-conditioner with a fan in the room which helps mitigate the noise, but its something to keep in mind if you plan to sleep late. Other than that, the neighborhood is fairly quiet.
My home is your home, so you have an all-access pass!
I am a fountain of information (even if I say so myself ;) and am available to help you plan your day with customized advice on sightseeing, FOOD! shopping, live music, concerts, sports events etc. I love my city, and will be very happy to share it with you.
Long Island City (not to be confused with Long Island which is NOT part of NYC,) is a safe and relatively quiet neighborhood. Its the perfect place to stay while visiting NY: more convenient to get to and from Times Square, the theaters and the main tourist areas than from downtown or uptown Manhattan, yet relatively quiet and peaceful with lots of galleries and MoMA PS1 Contemporary Art Museum down the block.
The apartment is a 3-minute subway ride from Midtown Manhattan
The subway stations for the E, M and 7 trains and the G trains are just 2-3 blocks away. Greenpoint and Williamsburg are just across the Pulaski Bridge, a few stops on the G train.
Street parking is very scarce - I always schedule my errands around when I'm more likely to find parking. Alternatively, paid lots ($10-$15 a day) are just a few blocks away.
1. Even if you're going to be here for less than 7 days, do buy a $30 7-day unlimited MetroCard for the subway and buses. It's economical and makes sense even if you're going to be here for just 4 days.
2. Download an app called Citymapper which will help you navigate our very vast and extensive subway system. You can get specific directions and have access to the subway map - very helpful.
3. 2. Get ready to walk! NYC is built for walking, and although you'll probably have an unlimited MetroCard for the subway, you're still going to be doing a lot of walking!
4. What you MUST bring is a pair of really comfortable, thick-soled shoes. A fair number of guests have come with thin-soled shoes and then get sore feet, although in retrospect, it might just be another reason to shop some more!
A note for our foreign visitors: please be aware that it is customary to tip 15-20% when you eat out at restaurants. Waiters/waitresses do not get paid a normal salary and rely on tips to make their wages, so be generous to our poor service people!! Of course, if the service is not good, then you can reduce tips appropriately, but here in NY, 15% is the minimum. The only other person you tip is a taxi driver who generally gets about 10% of the metered fare.
We stayed for 4 nights only but would totally recommend it to anyone.
1. Very friendly atmosphere (we spent some nights just talking to Min) and some good and useful sightseeing advice.
2. V. good location (just few stops from Manhattan and the subway itself is like 5 min away).
3. The Dog :-) Even if you are not the "doglover" type Schatzi is the most adorable dog ever.
4. If you are lucky you can taste some of delicious food Min is preparing.
5. The room is quite comfy & has enough space (although the window is a bit leaky).
1. If you are by car then it is quite problematic to find a parking space - usually you will have to leave the car quite far from the apartment. But that's an overall problem in NY.
Min was very welcoming and nice. We had a very good time there. The appartment is really 10 min. from Midtown in subway. She gives good advies and she is very concerned by your good stay in Manhattan. You can use the kitchen as well as you want and she makes good bagels:-) The dog is so adorable and quite. We had a very good time. We are very happy of our stay at Min's, it's was great :-) Merci encore et tu es la bienvenue en Belgique pour boire de bonnes bières:-)
I highly recommend staying at Min's place. Min was an excellent host and her apartment was beautiful. Our room was very nice - clean, spacious and warm and the bed was super comfy. The location was also very convenient and the neighbourhood nice and safe
Min gave us enough privacy but was still very sociable and easy to talk to. She gave us lots of good tips - where to eat, what to do, how to get around. All in all, our stay was very succesful - thanks!
My mum and I had such a lovely stay at Min's appartment. The location was great and you reach everything very fast, just 3 station from Central Station. Min was a great host, we had nice talks and appreciate every advice she gave us. She realy know NY by heart and told us the best spots for dining or sightseeing. She also take care of us before we even arrived and made sure we know the way and send us a great tip for broadway week, so we could order realy cheap tickets. The room was nice and clean, as the bathroom and kitchen.
I can highly recommend this place and just say thanks for this great time.
Min was an excellent host! She was available and helpful and let privacy at the same time. She's got lots of info and interesting tips and she was also very helpful in anything we needed. She is easy going, friendly and she made us feel at home. Shatzi an Eva were all the time around. They are amazingly well behaved and really sweet.
The room is spacious, nice warm and the bed is very comfortable. There's street noise but what else can one expect when travelling to NYC!
The apartment is very well located, very close to Manhattan by subway and in walking distance to nice restaurants and bars. The views from the park at the end of the street are amazing; even staying in a different area, it is worthwhile to go there to take some nice photographs of the skyline.
It was a great experience at airbnb. Highly recommended!
Our stay at Min was simply fantastic! It was our first Airbnb experience and Min was just the perfect host. She treated us more like friends than customers and helped us out in every situation (insider-tips, calling a taxi, giving directions, offering us deliciouse breakfast ...)
Her apartment is really nice and the area in general is just perfect! (It only took us 2 minutes to walk to the subway station and you can get everywhere within 5-10 minutes [e.g. Times Square or Grand Central!] , there is also a post-office, a grocery store, a nice park, a pharmacy, a bank and a nice diner in walking distance) ... the area is also very SAFE !
In general, we would recommend this place to everyone, because you can't find better hosts than Min and her adorable Schatzi!
We stayed at Min's for about a week. It was great! Min is a great host - friendly, accommodating and always willing to chat with us! She gave us many good recommendations on places to eat :P the location is very convenient to get to Central Manhattan and Brooklyn - LIC is nice and peaceful, we actually liked coming back to a quieter area, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Thanks so much Min!
Min was very kind and generous with opening up her home. Her dog is so adorable! Very good area and surrounded by trains. Literally a couple stops away from Times Square. It was a blast!
This was our second time staying at Min's and it was just as great as last time! Can't do anything else then give her our best recommendations.
Hopefully we'll make a hattrick next year!
