The Space

Charming 1907 bungalow with wood floors, Persian carpets, antique furnishings throughout; a long covered porch; a big yard with berries and fruit trees and kale out back; and the best pour-over coffee in Portland right across the street at Extracto (easy does it!).

You'll be 500 feet from two excellent restaurants: Pok Pok Noi and Grain & Gristle. Also near a new record shop; the best bar in town; and a vintage drum shop! THIS IS THE COOLEST CORNER IN THE CITY! I feel so lucky to live here - I think this is the ideal NE homebase for enjoying the best of our beautiful city.

5 blocks to Whole Foods. 3 blocks to the galleries, vintage shops, yoga studios, and restaurants of the awesome Alberta Arts District. Easy 10 min drive to the airport, downtown, SE Hawthorne area, or the Mississippi district. On major bus lines and a bike boulevard - I can help arrange bikes, just let me know! Families - there's a great park with a new jungle gym for kids and community garden 5 blocks away.

There are two bedrooms with queen beds - including one Serta purchased new Dec 2011 - and a comfortable pull-out couch in the living room. Bedding, down comforters, and pillows were purchased new Dec 2011.

Other than books and records, the house will be clutter-free. Feel free to pick from the garden!

  • Overall it was a good experience:
    1. Neal is a friendly host who is easy to communicate with. He gave us some great restaurant tips.
    2. The house is full of rustic charm and you can’t beat the location. Great cafe and restaurants across the street and very close to Alberta St.
    3. I enjoyed Neal’s eclectic wall art, and as a vintage collector myself I definitely appreciated all the vintage furniture and decor.
    4. As a person with environmental sensitivities I appreciated that there were no artificial scents in the house and that the linens were all washed with scent-free detergent.
    5. We really enjoyed the company of George, the neighbourhood cat.

Our only complaint is that the house could have been cleaner.

Tip: Bring your own toiletries as none were provided during our stay.

  • Neal's place is very nice. It is an older house and has the quirky charm which comes along with that, and you can tell that Neal does a great job of caring for it. Additionally, Neal is a great host and was very quick to respond and very accommodating to our last minute reservation. My sister especially appreciated the notes & instructions that Neal left around the house.

The kitchen was a little lacking as Neal doesn't have a microwave, toaster or coffee pot and seems to primarily cook with cast iron which takes a special touch. However, if you are more interested in eating out, the Alberta Arts District is extremely close and has an abundant choice of restaurants, cafes and bars to choose from. There is only street parking and it gets a little crowded at night but my sister was always able to find a spot within a block or so.

  • Had a great stay. The house was nice, had a big fenced-in back yard. It was right across the street from a coffee shop and a short walk to Alberta. Everything went smoothly and Neal was a great host.

  • Neal's place was quiet, clean and close to the Alberta Arts District. Recommended !

  • Great location and Neal couldn't have been nicer! Even though he was on vacation, Neal sent us a welcoming e-mail on our first day there. Porch was a fabulous start to the day, along with George, the cat, and Extracto coffee! Thanks, Neal!

  • I don't think I could have had a better first Airbnb experience. Neal was incredibly kind and hospitable. His house was cozy, charming, and so close to the lovely Alberta Arts district. Though my favorite part of the stay was George, the neighborhood cat, who stopped by the front porch daily to say hello!

  • Great place! Clean and cozy, on a terrific corner of NE Portland. Very easy communication with host. Wonderful overall.

  • This is a cute little two bedroom in an amazing location in NE Portland. My family stayed here when they came to visit and it was perfect. With a little backyard and a great porch, it makes for a little home away from home. Also, Neal the owner was very nice and quick to respond with questions.

  • Charming home in an excellent location. Easy walking distance to great eateries (including late night food) and shops. The house is cozy and perfect for staying in and relaxing. We loved hanging out in the porch and living room.
If you are mature and can follow rules, this is the right place for you. Neal is upfront on his expectations from the beginning so be sure to be okay with it before hand. We had a great experience!

About
Hi there! Thanks for having a look and considering staying in my home. I travel a lot for work and find that the best experiences happen when I stay in a house in a cool neighborhood that is removed from, but close to, the downtown or commercial area of a city. I'm so lucky to have a home in an amazing area of Portland and look forward to sharing this place with guests. I personally think this is the ideal neighborhood for many reasons, including proximity: I'm a short walk from Alberta Arts, 15 minute bike ride to downtown, 15 minute bike ride to SE Hawthorne area, and a 10 minute drive to the airport. A few tips: Dalos Ethiopian restaurant is 15 blocks away and perhaps the best inexpensive meal in all of Portland. Try the burger at Grain & Gristle across the street. Take a walk to the Sabin Community Garden. Go see a movie at the Kennedy School. Get a piece of pie at Random Order. Enjoy your time in this beautiful city!
