Glorioso indeed! Ed and Julie's garden is absolutely beautiful. The casita is cosy, clean, and well-appointed. Shower ran hot and all kitchen appliances were dependable. Julie was away during my stay, but it was an absolute delight to be hosted by Ed. He welcomed me with local fruit and a big jug of bottled water (more than enough to accommodate my entire stay). My first night, he took me to a lovely vinyasa flow yoga class that was a perfect end to a long day of travel. All of his recommendations for food and activities in town were great, and we had a blast dancing to the reggae band on Friday night!
Pretty much a modest tropical paradise. Not only was Ed a congenial and well-informed host, the cabana we stayed in was beautiful, super clean, and comfortable. Walk to the Cahuita National Park, or the charming small sanctuay, Tree of Life, if you are an animal lover. Not much to do in the town, but there is a little grocery store and some restaurants also within walking distance. Top ratings to Ed and his place!
We took a private shuttle from San Jose to Cahuita (I would highly recommend Costa Rica Shuttle) and our driver called and spoke with Ed who gave him directions on how to get to the house once we arrived in the center of Cahuita which was extremely helpful! We arrived in the evening at Ed and Julie's and Ed was there to let us in, greet our driver and give us a tour of our house. He showed us how everything worked with the shower, trash, etc. Very comfy bed, clean and had everything we needed. After we got settled in, Ed showed us his beautiful home and offered us some glasses of wine and recommended some spots to grab dinner. He had some errands to run so he ended up coming out with us to the reggae bar in town which is only about a 5 min walk. He introduced us to his friends Troy, Georgia and Babu who (email hidden). If you get a chance to meet these guys, you won't be disappointed. They are so friendly and welcoming! We had a great time having dinner (great fish with Caribbean sauce and the piña coladas are awesome!) with them all and grabbing drinks. The following day Ed called up his friend Wayne who rented us bikes for $5 a day, the best deal in town! He is a few doors down so it's easy to rent and return them. Ed also gave us a walking tour of the yard and showed us the beautiful coral pool next to the ocean. Unfortunately it was too rough to swim in while we were there but beautiful to sit on the bench and watch the waves roll in. The garden around the home and on the way down to the water is amazing. So many flowers, birds and lizards it's amazing. Each night you fall asleep to crashing waves and the the sound of the jungle. On either side of the house there are beautiful beaches you can walk or ride a bike to and the national park is about a ten minute bike ride. Totally worth going to and was our favorite beach to explore and body surf at. Very clean and wasn't crowded. We saw sloths and monkeys in the trees on the way in and out and even had monkeys chucking fruit at us one time. Downtown Cahuita had a lot of great restaurants and happy hours going on. We hit Ricky's Bar for dinner and drinks and also a smoothie bar. Cahuita is a relaxed town with super friendly people. Ed was great for recommendations and to tell us about the area. This place is a little slice of paradise and we would highly recommend staying here. Thank you Ed and Julie! Pura vida!
We really enjoyed our stay with Ed who is a fantastic host. He is friendly, inviting and very knowlegable of the local area and a genuine great person! The cottage itself is well equiped with everything you need and is set in a beautiful garden. From the hammock in the garden, I counted 60 species of birds including toucans, lizards, frogs, monkeys, sloths and other jungle creatures. The location in Cahuita is laid back, wild and beautiful. I would recommend Ed's garden cottage without hesitation. Thanks Ed!
Edward made us feel like part of the family right from the start of our visit.El Jardin Glorioso is a beautiful cabin surrounded by all maner of flowers, trees and plants. The Carribean sea is only footsteps from the door. The coral pool is very refreshing on a hot day.Cahuita is a fun town with Jamacian influences and plenty of great places to eat.We enjoyed our visit to the park and sloth sanctuary, but relaxing on the deck was my favorite thing to do,watching the humming birds.Ed was a very gracious host, and we enjoyed chatting with him over coffee or his delicious rum punch.Thank you Ed and Julie,we had a great time.Floyd and Anne Marie.
We flew into Limon and shared a ride to Cahuita on Feb 9th, after leaving a snow covered Boston, MA.
Ed was very informative especially after learning this was our first time visiting Costa Rica. He gave us all sorts of tips and ideas that made the rest of our trip better. We had a great dinner at Malu Malu just down the street (walking) and in the morning Ed walked us over to pick up bikes we rented for $4 each a day!
Then we rode 10 minutes into town and had the best snorkeling trip with a father and son boat company for $25 pp. It was the best snorkeling in Costa Rica (in our opinion). We saw dozens of kinds of both tropical fish and coral. They served us vine ripened fruit at Punta Cahuita where we saw our first white faced monkey!!
The Cabin was built by Ed and is masterfully constructed of local teak wood with beautiful high ceilings and simple touches that make it cozy and comfortable. The cabin's proximity to the main house gave us a feeling of security but was less private than some places we visited later on our trip.
Walking into the gardens from the cabin we felt like we had entered another time long ago when animals, birds, trees, flowers and even dinosaurs still flourished. At home we have some tiny house plants that in Ed's garden, where giant sized. The royal and fan palms soared into the blue sky. The garden was indeed glorious.
We saw many animals agouti (bunny like creature), lingo, two toed sloth, lots of bats and birds.
The beach offered great views and the sound of the ocean less then 100 yards from our cabin was intoxicating. The beach was volcanic rock with a couple of small tidal pools, it wasn't a place we found we wanted to swim. There were beaches down the road a piece and the swimming was exceptional, like bath water it was so warm! Ed recommended Chiquita beach as the best place to swim (about a 10 minute walk from the cabin)
One evening we walked over to the Reggae bar and danced to d.j. music and Ricky's restaurant for lunch was a big hit for us.
Overall it was a very enchanting experience. We would highly recommend the cabin for a couple or small family and Edward was a wonderful host. While neighboring towns like Puerto Viejo are more busy, Cahuita is a gem of a small Caribbean town that is well worth a visit and stay.
We hope to come back again sometime in he future!!
We had a very relaxed time at jardin glorioso. We ended our Costa Rica trip here and it was the perfect place. The cabina is as listed, very spacious and it has everything you need. Edward is very friendly and helpful, but we felt totally free to do our own thing.
Cahuita is quite small and pretty much tourist free, it feels very authentic and laid-back. If you want, you can easily go to Puerto Viejo or other beach places as a day trip.
We didn't get to swim in the coral pool or the sea behind the cabina, as the weather wasn't as good as we hoped. The beach is quite rocky, so a bit dangerous with rough weather.
Overall, we had a wonderful time here and felt really relaxed on our way back to the airport :)
Hello, My name is Edward, my wife Julie and I have been enjoying Cahuita since 2004. We also have a home in Taos, NM., where we live when we are not in Costa Rica. I was a general contractor by trade and Julie is in the health care profession. We bought our Cahuita property in 2004. It had two ramshackel houses on it. We rebuilt one house and tore the other one down and replaced it with what is now the Casita. It has taken several years of two and three month working vacations to create our special place here in Cahuita. It was truly an adventure and we loved every minute of it. Come share what we have created.
