A lavish cottage (Illam) with a sitting area and a bedroom, a bathroom that opens out to the elements, and a spacious courtyard all for yourself.
The Illam (home) echoes the luxury of rich Tamil heritage, with large spaces, ornate furnishings and two airy verandas in the front and back.
The living spaces offer an experience of the rare simplicity of village life alongside the historic opulence of South India’s regal past. These dwellings echo the spirit and culture of the region.

The space
A divine experience nestled in Veppathur, Kumbakonam – the town of 5000 temples. The property is designed like an ‘agraharam’ – the characteristically Brahmin street lined with ‘illams’ (homes). It’s a tribute to the region’s heritage, and its historic stature as a seat of power in South India.
The living spaces offer a window into what was once a predominant way of life, where cultures, communities and traditions thrived in harmony.
The living spaces at offer an experience of the rare simplicity of village life alongside the historic opulence of South India’s regal past. Adorned with Athangudi tiles, ornate teak doors with lavish courtyards at each entrance, these dwellings echo the spirit and culture of the region; modeled after ancient Chettiar homes that consist of a ‘thinnai’ (raised verandah), ‘mutram’, (central open-to-sky courtyard), ‘koodam’ (the living hall), and the ‘samayal’ (kitchen).
There are two types of cottages – the Cottage room & the lavish ‘illam’and The luxurious family home ‘Pannaiyarillam’, inspired by traditional estate owners’ bungalows. Each of these cottages is rooted in the warmth and rustic comforts that is innate within the region.
The property is also equipped with a convention centre that is ideal for destination weddings, where every celebration makes for unforgettable memories.
The chimes of the tolling bell that welcome you, are a precursor to the sublime experience that awaits. You step into a street modeled after a typical Agraharam – literally translating into ‘garland of houses’.
These houses, or ‘Illams’, line both sides of the streets. The cottages are designed like traditional Chettiar homes – with large verandas, Athangudi tiles on the floor, ornate Burmese teak doors and open-to-air bathrooms.
Strolling through the property, you will come across lush green coconut groves, temple shrines and the occasional peacock that has made a home here. The landscape takes your senses on a much deeper journey, elevating your holiday to a higher level of transcendence.

Location

Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India

30 kms from Kumbakonam, Mantra Koodam is situated in the village of Veppathur.
Kumbakonam refers to the ‘kumbha’, or mythical pot that contained all seeds of life, displaced by the dissolution of the universe until it came to a rest at where this town stands. Enter into a world of otherworldly charm, 6 kms from this spiritual spot. A region dating back to the Sangam period, Kumbakonam rose to be a prominent city between the 7th and 9th centuries AD, when it was occupied by the mighty Cholas. During the British Rule, the town became a prominent centre of European education and Hindu culture, acquiring the name “Cambridge of South India”. The town is located right at the heart of the celebrated temple trail of South India, just an hour from Tanjavur. With over 5000 big and small temples spread across its landscape, it is rightly called the ‘temple town’. 30 kms from Kumbakonam, our property is situated in the village of Veppathur. Spread over 15 acres, the property is flanked by the Veera Chozha and Cauvery rivers on either side. A destination that’s serenaded by the sound of gushing rivers, chirping birds and the chimes of a divine experience.

Hi. I’m Vineeth and I will be your host. My two passions are food and travel. I’m a self-confessed foodie and I love Kerala cuisine. After all, who doesn’t love the food from their home town? So, when you dine with us, you can be sure that you will be served only authentic food, prepared with fresh, local produce, and made with love. My other love is travel. I guess that explains why I’ve worked for one of Kerala’s leading eco-hospitality houses – CGH Earth. I’ve made sure that my conscience is as clear as the environment. And that the rich heritage of my land gets the respect it deserves. I can honestly say that you will not find a better guide or friend in your Kerala adventure. I may be uncompromising when it comes to conservation, but I will go out of my way to make sure you feel at home. Let me know what you imagined this holiday to be like, and I will help you live your dream. See you soon.
