About this listing
Cliffside apartment with an ocean view in a quiet, safe, rural area on Isabela's Northwest coast. We're surrounded by rambling tropical gardens - great for birdwatching and star watching! There's a tree-house view of Jobos Beach, a sandy beach that's great for both experienced or beginner surfers (on the sandbar).
Fully equipped kitchenette including refrigerator, microwave oven, gas stove, coffeemaker, blender, and outdoor grill.
Cable TV, DVD/CD, wireless internet, ceiling fan, washing machine, indoor shower with hot water, and outdoor shower.
Bunk bed (full on bottom, twin on top) with linens provided, and inflatable bed available for a third person.
Five minutes by car from Jobos and Shack's Beaches for surfing, swimming, kite/wind surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, shell-collecting, horseback riding, and dining. The beach is close enough to walk to, but a rental car is highly recommended, since there's no public transportation.
Fifteen minutes from BQN airport, rental cars, public golf and tennis facilities, supermarkets, skateboard park, ice skating rink, and Surfer's and Wilderness beaches for surfing, hiking, and mountain-biking.
$45/night or $275 a week. $10/night extra for a third person. Special rates for longer stays. Minimum advance reservation is for three nights.
Surfboards available from 6'4" to 9'0" as well as other toys like bikes, and snorkel gear. A portable A/C unit can be provided.
Come and go as you please, but make sure the windows aren't wide open if it rains while you're gone. Also, please don't leave the fans running while you're gone, because they will not make the place any cooler when you get back (they work directly on your skin). Enjoy yourself!
Kathy's place was great. It looks exactly as in the pictures and has everything you need, including surfboards and a car to rent. Kathy and Terry were very friendly and helpful with everything I needed. She even called and arranged for me and my friend to get out there and back from San Juan, which would have been very hard without her help. The only concern was that there were consistently ants in the apartment coming in from outside. However, this seems like an easy fix and I would definitely recommend this place and consider going back.
Our host, Kathy, was extremely helpful and prompt. We had a little bit of trouble obtaining validation through the website proper, but she was very warm and made us feel welcome even before we got there-from our first conversation over the phone.
The apartment is just as pictured, a little old and worn, but clean and organized, and cool enough to not need air conditioning in June. It's worth noting that we were not troubled by ANY kind of insect at all.
Essentials like cooking utensils and towels are available and the bathroom is roomy, and WiFi works great. We arrived near midnight and Kathy was up--she said hello and offered her help...that was a special touch. She even had some of her garden fruit in the table for us.
Our stay was related to the Isabela Tango Festival, and we really appreciated the warm water showers after the milongas and tango classes.
Even though you need a car for transportation to the restaurants and beaches, we definitely recommend this place as an inexpensive alternative in Isabela, and we plan to return.
Close to activities, safe, quite
Provided beach towels and bath towels
Bed Bugs: in pillows, and mattresses
Mold & Mildew: on shower curtains / wooden toilet seat
Rust: everywhere, including utensils
Fan: very loud, epically at night when trying to sleep
Dogs are free to roam. Sometimes the dogs are docile. Sometimes dogs didn't move for our car. Were aggressive when tried to herd them out of the way.
Significant lack of integrity.
We were charged an additional 7% tax. Stayed in other airbnb properties while in PR, Kathy was the only one who charged additional money. She asked for $25.25 which was 10% of the total amount NOT 7% as stated.
Kathy emailed me prior to arrival inquiring if I surfed. I told her we were beginners and she informed me that she and her partner Carlos teach surfing, snorkeling, etc. She implied that they were a professional outfit. We never met Carlos, saw an office or gear (other than that in her front yard). We accepted a surf lesson prior to arriving. Our lesson with Kathy was on hard boards rather than soft top (which I would not recommend for beginners). Kathy took us to Jobos for the lesson but failed to warn us about the sea urchins. As a result we stepped on several resulting in spines and cuts to the bottom of our feet. Unfortunately we had paid and tipped Kathy prior to the lesson.
NO. This was the first stop on our vacation. Within 24 hours we were covered in bed bug bites and pulling spines from our feet for the rest of the trip. When we noticed bumps after the first night we attributed it to mosquitoes but, did not recall being bit. After the second night we thought the increasing number of bumps might be an allergic reaction. We bought new sunscreen and washed sheets but we were covered in additional bites. We swapped beds the third night and changed our head and feet positions. I woke up with my feet covered in fresh bite and that's when I knew it was bed bugs. I stripped the sheets and l found skin sheds in the seams and folds of the mattresses. We left a day early. In an effort of decontaminate our clothes and bags from eggs, so we would not spread the bugs we spent our final afternoon at Kathy's washing everything. Prior to leaving we stripped the beds, hung towels, swept the floor and washed dishes. We were careful to document everything and take photos.
I notified Tony, Kathy's husband that we were leaving a night early due to bed bugs because Kathy had left PR. He said they didn't have bed bugs, so I handed him one. He said it was a termite but, regardless we were clearly being bitten. He gave me $50.00 compensation. The money didn't begin to cover the expenses for the laundromat, anti-itch creams, anxiety and constant itching.
Kathy's was just great - we (2 pax) even were lucky enough we could extend our stay. Kathy was such a great host, welcoming us with a fresh papaya from a nearby garden, showing us was nature offers around her house.
Jobos can be checked from the treehouse, we were lucky to catch some small ones & Kathy helped us out renting her boards to us for probably the best rate in town.
The apartment itself is exactly as shown, it is nice, clean, offering everything needed also for cooking etc. Wifi works fine, a/c is not really needed.
A car is needed to go around, but this is true for everywhere on the west coast.
Thanks Kathy & Terry, if we ever visit PR again we would love to stay at yours again!
Definitely recommend this place to everybody coming to Isabela.
The apartment has all the basics including a fridge, 2 burner stovetop, microwave, coffee maker, blender, hot water shower, and washing machine. It's a 5 or 10 minute drive to Jobos Beach, which is one of the best places in the Caribbean to learn to surf. We took surf lessons from Kathy who is an excellent instructor and we were both able to stand up on our first day! She also rents out surf boards for less than the local surf shops and has a soft rack for transporting them that easily attached to the top of our rental car. One of our favorite days was a hike that Kathy told us about, it started at a local surfing beach and 45 minutes later ended up at a beautiful sand beach that we had all to ourselves. There's a lot to do and see in the area including waterfalls you can jump off of, hiking in the forest, snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving, and paddle boarding, and she is willing to tell you how to get there on your own or to take you on a guided tour.
We loved staying with Kathy. The place was great -- tucked away, but still close to town. You can see the ocean from the treehouse, which was pretty cool, and having access to surf boards was a major plus. Kathy was very friendly, and we loved her sweet dogs. She had mangos on the table for us which was a nice touch. All in all a great experience, and we'll definitely be coming back to Isabela!
I stayed with my 4 year old son in April for a week. Kathy was very responsive and welcoming. The studio is just like the photos listed and the neighborhood is a safe and quiet one.
It was perfect for what I was looking for and I would recommend it to families and others.
Note, the Puerto Rico government charges all hosts that provide accommodation a 7% fee, therefore with Kathy and any other host, you will need to pay in cash a 7% tax on your total payment to Airbnb.
