Well I was bit, stung and peed on, but wouldn't have had it any other way...well I could have done without the sting. If you love dogs, nature and spectacular vistas, then Shelter from the Storm offers everything. If you worry about breaking a finger nail, how your hair looks, or have expectations aligned with being pampered like royalty...maybe not. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Monkey house and our host Daryl. If you are well traveled and understand that life is what you make of it, this is a fantastic place to get away to.

Response from Donna:
You see. That is about the most honest review that I have ever read and that is why I like these guy so much. I was not directly responsible for the sting, however.

Our week at Shelter from the Storm with Daryl and Donna went by far too quickly. The accommodations cannot accurately be caught on film. While they are as pictured, the entire space is immaculately clean and cared for. We felt as if we were the first guests to use the space. Daryl and Donna managed to create an oasis that has every modern convenience yet is respectful to the environment. We found it difficult to leave the Monkey House porch overlooking the jungle. It truly feels like a tree house. We also enjoyed the tiled pool and the ranchero that are great gathering spaces for guests. We have used air bnb many times but the communication from Daryl and Donna was the most helpful we have experienced. From our initial reservation to assistance in planning our trip, they were informative. They gave suggestions for tours and even helped arrange a few for us. Their expertise was on target. We enjoyed a trip to Corcovado, a horseback ride to waterfalls and a canopy tour. The "house" book with local information on beaches and restaurants was also helpful. If you are looking for a place to have new adventures, relax in the sun and enjoy the Tico culture, this is it! Pura Vida is more than a slogan at Shelter from the Storm.

PARADISE FOUND! We have been to Costa Rica six times and have explored much of the country during our extended visits. We have also been fortunate to visit many beautiful places in other parts of the world. This property is the nicest place we have ever stayed. It rates 6 out of 5 stars. It is a unique tropical paradise with stunning views overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Some of the nicest, largest and most desolate beaches in the entire country are close by. The hosts, Donna and Daryl, are a lot of fun. They set us up with reservations at a restaurant that should not be missed and they also made reservations for us on an awesome river kayaking trip. While hanging out in the pool, you can not only enjoy the ocean view, but also numerous white face monkeys and toucans. Adjacent to the pool, there is also a very cool and comfortable fully stocked honor bar, which includes the coldest beer in Costa Rica. The Monkey House gives you the feel of staying in a tree but with every amenity and great decor. It has a full kitchen with modern appliances and a very nice bathroom. The custom cabinetry and wood ceilings are beautiful. The full-size washer and dryer also comes in handy. You will not find a more beautiful or comfortable place to stay. We are already planning a return trip and highly recommend this place.

Spent a delightful month in the Monkey House! Enjoyed hours relaxing on the porch, entertained by the passing toucans, monkeys and sloths. Donna and Daryl are wonderful hosts, attentive but not obtrusive. Having traveled throughout Costa Rica this is the best maintained property we have stayed at. It would be impressive in the United States but in the jungle of a developing country it is in a class of its own. Hopefully we will make it back,...

We felt very welcomed by Daryl who was an excellent, friendly, entertaining host. The accommodations and location were actually more beautiful than pictured. I don't think you can capture the view adequately in a picture. It is truly breathtaking.

We had an amazing stay and will definitely return in the near future. This was our first trip to Costa Rica and the trip would not have been the same if it weren't for Daryl and Donna. They know so much about the area and are so well organized that you will have no problem knowing where to go and making sure you get into the best spots. Staying here is like having your own private resort and the views are nothing short of spectacular. Sitting by the pool you take a look around and realize that you are in the middle of the jungle surrounded by wildlife looking out over the ocean and have all the best destination only a short distance away.

Donna and Daryl were very gracious and thoughtful hosts. I cannot recommend their wonderful spot highly enough. The setting and the scenery definitely exceeded all expectations. The views were spectacular and the attention to detail that D and D have put into the place is really amazing. From the decor to the overall maintenance of the property, you can tell immediately the care that is shown maintaining this beautiful spot. Felt very welcome at D and D's place. The kitchen greeted us with coffee, a fresh loaf of bread, eggs, milk, and breakfast sausages. While you will not be fed for the week, the fact that these things are there when you arrive was really thoughtful, and appreciated. The decor and quality of the Monkey House was first class. Waking up to monkeys howling in the early morning will never be forgotten. Also had a chance to see white face monkeys on the morning of departure. Such a cool spot! If you're looking for a great mountain hideaway, close to monkeys and the beaches then this is the spot for you. A true gem nestled in the jungles of Costa Rica. Pura vida indeed..
