Villa Tica was amazing - it was exactly what we were looking for. If you are looking for the true Costa Rica experience, Quebrada Ganado is a great place to be. There are beaches near by that you can get to via bicycle or walking and the locals are friendly.
We did not rent a vehicle when visiting and I do not think that I would in the future. There are many means of transportation and Carlos, the groundskeeper, was very happy to to guide any questions that we had.
Ozzie, it was a great experience. Thanks for letting us stay at Villa Tica!
Die Beschreibung war exakt, vielen herzlichen Dank, wir haben uns gut und sicher gefühlt.
We stayed 5 weeks in February, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The photos really don't do justice to how big it feels. The groundskeeper and his sons are super friendly and were very helpful (though if you don't speak any Spanish it might be tough).
We saw toucans, motmots, mating turkey vultures, large iguanas, chickens and more right from the awesome porch and (large) yard. We also had many nights with 1 or 2 little fruit bats doing laps in the giant main room for a few minutes before heading out for the night. I thought they were pretty cool, and they didn't poop. House geckos are always fun, too.
The little river at the back of the property is awesome for kids. There's a little dammed up section that's created a small wading pool. Great for hot days (which are pretty much all days). Tadpoles for kids to catch. Lizards sunning themselves. Really amazing. Or you can take a 4x4 up the river a bit, where there's a lot more shade and you can see basilisks running across the water. (We didn't make it to the waterfall. Apparently it's too far a hike for young kids.)
The town of Quebrada Ganado is amazing. Super friendly people. Macaws flying overhead. Sport Pollo has great food (try the patacones especiales). It's small and not touristy at all (I think we were the only Americans in town), but has most everything you might need between the handful of markets, variety stores, pharmacy, panaderias, etc. It also feels very safe. Little kids walking around alone. Bikes left unlocked. Etc.
It's ~18min to Jaco if you want, but Playa Blanca is hands down the best beach around. Carlos (groundskeeper) can intro you to a nice local taxi (I forgot his name) who can shuttle you all over for much cheaper than a rental. Manuel Antonio is an easy day trip. NeoFauna reptile & butterfly santuary, Rainforest Adventure for ziplines, crocodile boat tour and horseback rides through the beach and jungle in Tárcoles. Carara is just up the road… Lots nearby if you want it.
* Almost no mosquitos at all. Shut the house up right before dusk and you'll have no problems.
* Fan and extension cords are provided.
* Beds have mosquito netting, which is nice to have and surprisingly uncommon.
* Above average mattresses.
* Optional internet (that works). Kolbi 3g and Claro 2g signal.
The only minuses:
* Very, very little furniture in the house. The master bedroom is giant, and a desk or chair or something would be nice.
* No beach towels. We didn't check bags, and beach towels are comparatively giant in small bags.
* Like any house in CR, there are insects and arachnids that share the house.
* A neighbor's large tree fell near the house during our stay. Thankfully we were fine, but the sound was terrifying.
Still 5 stars though.
We loved it. Thanks Ozzie!
A very beautiful, but simple villa located near Jaco.
We were looking for a place near Jaco but did not want to stay in a typical hotel with all the tourists. Osmar's Villa was just perfect for what we wanted. It is located at the back of small village and is at the edge of the jungle. The house is just beautiful, with a full kitchen, hot showers, washer and dryer, beds with mosquito netting, and a beautiful wrap around porch.
It was great to wake up and sit on the porch listening to birds while drinking coffee or lying in the hammock reading books. It is very peaceful place.
The Villa is about 20 minutes away from Jaco, minutes away from a couple of really nice beaches. A few minutes north, there is Carara National Park which is home to Scarlet Macaws. Manuel Antonio National Park is little over an hour away and has some great beaches. Monteverde Cloud Forest is about 2 hours north.
There are also small grocery stores in the village and larger ones in Jaco or near Playa Herradura. Since it is not that far away from Jaco, there are plenty of things to do nearby. Surfing, swimming, zip lining, horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, etc...
The grounds are well kept and knowing that a housekeeper was on site 24/7 gave us the peace of mind that our belongings were safe while we were out and about.
A simple but comfortable home minutes from some beautiful and less known beaches and close to Jaco as well. It's located in a small village which makes it a great place for people who are interested in getting to know the culture and the "real" Costa Rica (but maybe not so good if you want really, really private). The neighbors are wonderful! They helped us find things and get to the good beaches and we spent some great evenings sitting on porches, chatting and showing our two boys farm animals and the country life. There is lots of room in the house and plenty of fans to keep things cool. It is very simple as far as furnishings, floors, etc but for us that was great since we didn't have to worry to much about what our two boys might do. The wrap around porch was great for sitting and watching birds. We saw scarlet macaws, vultures, and many smaller native birds as well as frogs.
I am an Immigrant from Brazil who has traveled throughout the United States, Europe, Central and South America. I settled down in Southern California and started my own landscaping business. When I traveled from the US to Brazil on motorcycle, I became very interested in revisiting Costa Rica one day. Finally I was able to build a vacation house there where my family and I have been able to spend great times together.
