We can turn you on to all things on offer from quirky to elegant in this amazing town. We are great hosts who love to share our discoveries as lovers of great food, music, architecture, archaeology, history and both ancient and modern culture. We are often here in San Miguel working in our art studios. If not we have a manager who will look after you in our abscence-eithier way you will enjoy our warm hospitality! The house has maps, tour suggestions and information about spanish classes, art classes, litery events, historic walks, salsa dancing, music of every taste, fantastic ( and inexpensive) resturants and (website hidden) you want to immerse yourself in living in beautiful San Miguel de Allende? Bienvendios!

The Neighborhood

The home and studio are nestled on a hillside in a country-like setting NOT in Centro San Miguel, which is what we love about it! Located just 10 minutes north beyond the Fabrica Aurora Art & Design Center and only one mile/a walkable 25 minutes total trip or 7 minute cab/local bus ride to the Jardin in Centro Historico. Our safe, quiet no-through fare cobblestone street is located in Monte de Loreto, a new but typical Mexican Colonia which has both Mexican and International residents. The area sits off a country road aside an old ranching property with panoramic vistas overlooking the mountians and the church steepled spires of the historic center. Besides the city markets, we have a local market on Mondays and Saturdays in the next neighbourhood about 5 blocks away. Pizza and local street food is available and there are also small "tiendas" or stores throughout the neighborhood, and fresh tortillas and fruit and vegetables are delivered to our door daily. There is a very inexpensive but well equipped gym in walking distance and numerous yoga, dance and Zumba classes (website hidden) the top of our street there is a biking/walking/running track that leads to the to botanical gardens and water reservoir. There is also a childrens playground a few minutes walk away.

Getting around

There is a local bus that stops every 10 minutes at bottom of our street that takes you directly to the modern supermarkets or to town. We often walk into town and cab it back if shopping. We are also well located to both the big central markets-one in Centro, the other San Juan Dios. Both are filled with fresh fruit, meats, vegetables and flowers. (and great taco stands!)
We are just 10 minutes walking beyond the Fabrica Aurora Art & Design Center and the Guadalupe Arts District-both with great restaurants, regular art openings, organic grocery and interesting shops and galleries-and only a further 15 minute walk to center of town, central markets and Jardin! The local bus stops every 10 minutes at bottom of our street. if you do not want to walk the whole distance into town and cabs are plentiful and inexpensive at $3-4 per ride.

Getting Out of Town
If driving, we are minutes from several hot springs, golf courses and horse trail riding and the highway that leads to all the shopping centers and other major towns of interest such as Atotonilco and Dolores Hildago-the talvera pottery center, antique yards, several haciendas and agarve and organic farms. A car is useful but not necessary except for touring. Private tours, shuttles and private cars are also readily available.

Other Things to Note

Some houses in San Miguel can be dark, cute but not comfortable, massive in scale, drafty and cold, or in neighborhoods that are crowded and noisy. We love the serenity of being just outside of the San Miguel yet having access to all the action whenever we want it. We love the green space around us yet being a short distance to town. Maybe because we are practicing artists we especially like the light and openess this home and area has. Also as visually stimulated people we love the elegance and quiet beauty of our house and furnishings. We think you will too!

  • Cate and Judson were great hosts, the house is lovely. We rent the whole house, and the time there was really relaxing. They were very helpful from the beginning to the end; I think it’s nice to live a couple days in an artist house, because you get to know the art-community. Hope to come back soon.

  • There is nothing like a good surprise. Cate and Judson´s place combines a great taste in Mexican arquitecture with the taste of two unique Artists. Considering that the location is a little out of the action, your first impression can be confusion, since this is a case in which a new development is in an area that still has low income residents. The bedroom and the bath are beautiful and in excellent conditions. Regarding Cate and Judson, I can share several nice details that made my visit to SMA unforgettable. Now I have a place that I feel as home and a couple of new friends that I see as Family.

  • This place is absolutely beautiful, comfortable, easy to get to/from...perfect in every way. I didn't get to meet the owners, but they were great to communicate with before my trip, and once there, Sergio, who helps take care of the house when they're gone, was a great host both at the house and gave me a great orientation to the city--how to get around, what to see, where to go. In short, I can't imagine that there is a better place to stay while visiting San Miguel de Allende.

  • Beautiful home with and amazing view of San Miguel. Cate and Judson's Art is through out the house adding a personal touch to an already outstandingly designed home. Sergio (who was looking after the house) Was so kind and generous and really made us feel welcome.
I could';t recommend this home more!!!!! thank you !

  • I know San Miguel very well. The best thing is to be in the middle of one magic and cosmopolitan place. Among galleries, traditions, sceneries and very polite people.
These are the reason why, boutique hotels are so common. But (always the “but”), they are expensive.
So, I was trying to find something very San Miguel style, but affordable.
    I did it.
This is the kind of house you usually find in “Architecture digests” or “Habitania” magazines.
A home with character, full of details, art, wood, textures, rocks, homey atmosphere, open spaces, etc. My room was very comfortable, beautiful ceiling, perfect bathroom, full of light and the main: a GOOD bed (soft, firm, new fine sheets, feather eiderdown, nice pillows, quietness, etc.).
The best was to find out how artists live. Their house is like them, they are like everything they have.
The house is not in the “Centro” area. But SM is small. In exchange, is cheap, you have a mountain in your back and an astonish 240° San Miguel view. I enjoyed being in the “terraza” quietness, waiting for the sunset. It happens just in front of you and in the middle you will have the Cathedral.
I need to be alone most of the time. And they respect that. But was very difficult to stay inside when I smelled “the Judson’s coffee”.
The place is good. However my personal experience with Judson and Cate was especially meaningful. Their culture, art, warmth and friendship, was the best unexpected experience in my San Miguel trip. In many ways they have touched my life.
If you would like to feel you are the most important guest in San Miguel, and live the kind of life you imagine when we are reading a magazine… this is the place.

We live in Byron Bay. New South Wales, Australia AND San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. We are both full time practising artists, Judson, a New Zealand born sculptor and master carver and Cate a USA born painter (and also life coach). We have created amazing homes in both Mexico and Australia that are filled with our paintings and sculptures along with surprising artworks of other international artists and many treasures from both our travels and from nature. We have both managed B & B properties as one of our many lifestyle incarnations and take pleasure in making travellers welcome and comfortable. We enjoy sharing our passions of art, history, culture, music, great food and of course traveling, with others! We ended up living in Mexico after going on a year trip through South America and across the USA visiting the national parks.Looking for a place to stop and do some artwork, we went to San Miguel de Allende and felt so at home in this amazing colonial jewel. We are currently exhibiting our sculptures and paintings in Mexico, California and Chicago. We also are enjoying sharing our skills and passion of art making with others. Recently we have opened our home studios both in Mexico and Australia up to both experienced and beginner painters and sculptors who want to have some fun and receive qualified, professional one on one art instruction. Feel free to ask us more about it! Adventurers at heart, we have soaking up as much of beautiful Mexico when we are there doing trips to various archeological sites and many colonial towns along the way! People often ask us where is home-and we reply that home is in our hearts because we have them with us wherever we go! Come visit! Happy Travels! Cate and Judson
