The space
PLEASE READ ALL--Wise Acre is better than glamping -- a RUSTIC, artfully designed, very LOCAL, whimsical compound of cabins and cottages. Airbnb pricing includes one studio cabin for up to 2 people.
If you choose to add more than 2 guests, for an additional fee per person, per night, you will have access to our second, rustic glamping guesthouse, which also sleeps 2 people. You have the option to choose only the attached, though separate, Living Studio with separate entrance, connected to Main Cabin where hosts Marcie and Mark live-- or ADD the ruggedly elegant historic, separate Writers' Cabin. And no other guests but YOU! The Studio has a loft and fold-out couch. The other Historic Bunk Cabin has comfy sleeping for 2 extra folks--NOTE**100 feet down a gently-lit driveway to the Studio bathroom, full kitchen and other sleeping areas. All in an enchanting National Wildlife Federation Certified Backyard Wildlife Refuge.
Remember sleep-away camp? Bring your swimsuits and river shoes. There are dipping holes in the East River--right in the back yard. Campfires, s'mores, fishing poles, snuggly, vintage tartan blankets, log cabin nights, great old books, Nat Geo magazines, board games, rushing streams, wildflower picnics, brilliant stars. That's Wise Acre, capturing 100 years of great American camp memories! Always mountain cool, shady and quiet, surrounded by stream and river, Wise Acre is an oasis in the high country of the West and Southwest.
And, like Sleep-away camp, if you wish to include up to 2 EXTRA people, for an additional fee-Per Person, guests may also sleep in the historic Writers' Bunkhouse Cabin. Guests will follow a 100-foot driveway to the en suite bathroom shared with the guest house, the Living Studio.
NOTE***The "Heidi Loft" or traditional homesteaders' cabin loft in the rafters above the wood burning stove is accessed by a sturdy, 8-ft. ladder. It is not suitable for children under the age of 9 or those with fitness or mobility issues.
Wise Acre has long been known as a spiritual sanctuary, International Wild Flower Festival site and celebration center to people throughout the valley and beyond.
Hosts Marcie Telander and Mark Schwiesow are well-established elders of the extended Valley, having been named "Valley Treasures" by the Crested Butte International Wildflower Festival.
We are grateful and honored to be community organizers, festivarians, writers and Earth-Justice advocates. Originally Midwesterners from Chicago, we were seeking to create a forward-thinking arts and writing compound. We came to Crested Butte and founded Wise Acre as eco-journalists, filmmakers and photographers--over 40 years ago. ***For more information and a wild and wonderful visual journey through our unique community, we would be honored if you viewed Marcie Telander's TEDXTalk including years of local history, tradition and ecological activism: "TRANSFORMING COMMUNITY: Celebrating Stories and Spirit of Place."
You can also read about our move to the valley, being enriched by Wise Acre and the 43 years through which we have offered, and continue to offer our services as preservers and protectors of our environment and wildly unique MoBoho (Mountain Bohemian) Community. Check Amazon for Marcie's essay and poetry in the award-winning collection: RITUAL AND HEALING: Stories of Ordinary and Extraordinary Transformation.
Guests have access to the private fishing in our back yard, walking our labyrinth, *bonfires in the fire-pit, the Writing Cabin and the Studio Living Space. There are also hammocks in the woodlands along our stream and the banks of the East River.
*Wise Acre is 420 Friendly with smoking OUTSIDE ONLY--
*if there are no fire and drought restrictions in place in the valley.

Where you’ll be

Crested Butte, Colorado, United States

This neighborhood is 6 miles from the town at the entrance to beautiful Cement Creek Canyon, Gunnison National Forest trails, hiking, biking and fishing. It is surrounded by gorgeous old spruce and cottonwood trees. This is a secret island in lush wetlands and beaver ponds. Wise Acre is the first cabin built in the neighborhood, created as a hunting-fishing camp for an early homesteading ranch family. It is full of wildlife, bird life, trout and beloved green gardens. Our neighborhood is a location known for eclectic, caring folks from around the country. Many of the locals have been in this unique, and quiet riparian location for decades. Around here we like to use the word "neighboring" as a verb.

I am not a tourist, I am an explorer. I like to dwell in a place and get to know the quirks, qualities and caring local people and Place Spirit of unique natural environments. So--as a Host I love to provide the same thing I seek as a traveler: a dedicated inspirational place to pause and find re-Creative peace for artists, pilgrims, nature lovers, folks in love and out-of-the-box individuals and couples to share in our wonderful space.
I call our unique and whimsical style--"MoBoho" --Mountain Bohemian.
So am I! Crested Butte is not like any other mountain ski town in North America. Local folks are independent, work hard in order to play, love to dress up in costumes for every occasion, love to protect and celebrate Nature, Life, Love and Liberty! As a community we share a casual, friendly love for this Paradise and its natural resources.
Wise Acre is named this for a very personal reason. When I was young, and growing up in Mid-Century rural Illinois, I was often scolded for being a "wise acre." This meant that for a little girl, I was "too creative, curious, outspoken and visionary." Thank Heavens things have changed--and I have not!
I am pleased to offer this sanctuary, workshop and retreat compound for my private practice psychotherapy clients and national and international eco-psychology and Earth Wisdom celebrations and rites-of-passage for individuals and groups to bring forth those qualities in their own lives.
I am an award-winning author, journalist and poet I am a culture-bearer and myth-carrier. I create education and celebration to sustain the legacy of the stories shared with me by the Old-Timers and homesteading families of our communities. I carry these wise stories forward to honor the past, heal the present and to create hope for the future.
The long-time, core community call me the GodMother and Tribal Mother of our Valley. I consider it to be my dedication and a sacred act to set down roots and choose to protect and preserve one watershed and all the relations who share it, for most of a human lifetime.
We consider Wise Acre and the rivers, mountains and Earth as having Personhood. I believe these First Nature relatives have greater-than-human rights and provide powerful guiding voices for our actions and stewardship---if only we have the ears to hear, and the eyes to see!
5 THINGS I WILL NOT LIVE WITHOUT: Changing of the seasons; living with and surrounded by First Nature; collecting and sharing stories; assisting people on their individual paths to discover and LIVE: Purpose, Passion, Peace and Personal Practice.
LIFE MOTTOS: This personal motto has become the rallying cry for the True Locals in our mountain valley: " Be more Wild than good!" and..." I live to celebrate and serve Nature's Mystery and Mystery's Nature."
This is why I am here. Come and share the vision and the view!
Be a Force for Nature, Marcie
