About this listing

Jack's Cottage is located in an enchanting garden on the beautiful Blackwater river Accessed by a very long, narrow lane, its old world charm is unspoilt, and every modern convenience has been added for the perfect get away from it all holiday.

The space

Jack’s Cottage is an 18th century thatched fisherman’s cottage located in a secluded garden beside the river Blackwater in Co Waterford, Ireland.
Beautifully restored, it retains its original charm, with every modern convenience.

Assessed by a narrow farm lane, it is a world away from busy 21st century lifestyles, but only 20 minutes drive to the nearest towns with all the facilities you might need, such as top class restaurants, traditional music bars, banks, art galleries and lots of unique shopping opportunities.

Perfect for get away from it all holidays, it has 3 bedrooms with brass beds. Duvets, crisp cotton linen and towels are provided, it sleeps 5/6. There is a fully equipped kitchen and a wonderful bathroom with a roll top bath and wet room shower. There is electric heating throughout with a wood burning stove in the living room. You will also find a welcome pack of essential supplies and fuel for the fire when you arrive.

The spacious cottage allows one to rediscover life’s simple pleasures; it is ideally suited to nature lovers, gardeners, bird watchers, artists, walkers, cyclists, fishermen.....

We recently built a hide by the river to help improve spotting the local otters.

Well-behaved pets are welcome.
Electricity, except for three storage radiators, is not included in the price.

Staying here is really a unique experience, it is off the beaten track and is so tranquil and peaceful most people leave with the feeling of floating on air. It really does have a magical quality.

Guest access

The cottage has 2 main living rooms, the first is the original kitchen with the dining table and wood burning stove with fireside chairs. The second has the TV and DVD player. There are 3 bedrooms and a very comfortable modern bathroom. The kitchen has all mod cons and there is a utility room with dishwasher, washing machine and clothes dryer. The cottage is surrounded with a large garden with outdoor seating areas. Plus there is a path leading to the riverbank, with a dock and a hide for wildlife garden. There is ample car parking.

Interaction with guests

We live next door to the cottage, so we are usually around to help guests get settled in or sort out any issues that might arise. We are available as little or as often as guests require.

Other things to note

The electricity costs are not covered by the booking fee, we read the meter at the beginning and end of a stay and that amount is due to be paid to the owner at the end of the stay.

I wish we had been able to meet Bridie but she was away on vacation. However someone did come to check up on us. The cottage was everything we expected. We did expect a narrow lane way but it was narrower than we thought- a good thing to keep in mind if renting a car. Ours just fit down the last bit. We just didn't go in and out more than once a day and made sure we were back before dark- no big deal. The views are spectacular. We also enjoyed our visits from Missy their cat who would come down each day to say hi. She's a real sweetie. We would have loved to have seen the garden in full bloom. They have done a beautiful job restoring the cottage. Thank you for letting us stay at Jack's Cottage.

Staying in Jack's Cottage was wonderful from start to finish. Beautiful and quiet location, cottage itself was homely, comfortable and well-equipped. Bridie and Ben couldn't have been more helpful. Definitely worth re-visiting.

Bridie and Ben, made us feel very special on arriving at Jacks Cottage. The warm bread, butter, jam and milk for a cup of tea, is a wonderful gesture. The cottage has been lovingly restored and it is a real home from home, with all the little touches of a 5 star hotel. If you are looking for peace and quiet, look no further, Jacks Cottage and stunning cottage garden will fill your senses and sitting on the little jetty listening to the river flow by is heaven.

We had an absolutely perfect time visiting Waterford and staying in Jack's Cottage. If you are looking for a tranquil break in one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland, this cottage comes highly recommended. Bridie was away when we arrived, and although we were several hours early (due to a last minute ferry cancellation), she was still very happy to help arrange for us to be let in. Once we were inside we found everything to be exactly as we had hoped from the photos and description. The interior of the cottage is of a high standard, and the facilities are exactly what is needed in a property of this type. We were able to cook all of our meals with what was provided, which was handy given how remote the cottage is and how daunting the lane can be (though, as Bridie points out in the information, it does get easier the more you do it!). We found the cottage to be both cosy and spacious enough so as not to feel cramped, although there were only two of us and it may be different for larger groups. Of course the real selling point of the cottage is the location, which is absolutely beautiful. Being so off the map really does make you feel as though you can relax in the surroundings. The garden runs from the front up behind the cottage, and is beautifully peaceful and very well maintained. The area near the river was out of bounds when we stayed due to storm damage, but I can imagine it being a wonderful place to sit and relax. The views are spectacular, as is the absolute silence at night. There are lots of opportunities to walk in the surrounding area, and many places to visit should you wish (many of which are pointed out in the information Bridie provides). Overall, a thoroughly recommended venue. Thank you Bridie!

Thank you very much for your wonderful review Joshua, I am very glad you enjoyed your holiday in the cottage so much. Apologies we were away for most of your visit and for the misunderstanding about your check out date, but all's well that ends well. Thanks again and I hope you will consider staying here again if you passing this way in the future.

Bridie's place was nice and quiet. If you're looking to get away from it all, this is the place. It's a good place to just stay in and enjoy the cottage. Beautiful garden and a nicely restored house. It's a bit rough to find but Jackie was VERY helpful with it. She was just great in general when it comes to helping us out. She gave us every little piece of information we wanted and was very communicative and available in the weeks/days before our arrival. You can tell she really cares about her guests. It was a bit sad that she was so busy during our stay but that's not her fault of course. :D All in all a lovely stay! Thanks Jackie (&Sam&Ben)!

Thanks for your kind words Tim, I am sorry you found the house cold, thats the first time anyone has ever said that. We always find that lighting the wood burning stove and using the electric heaters make it very cosy and warm. Bridie (aka Jackie, I think!)

Hi I'm Bridie,
My husband Ben and I restored and rent Jack's Cottage. We have traveled a lot, all over the world, staying in all sorts of places, so when we found Jack's Cottage we knew we could create a unique and special place for other travelers to enjoy. We have been hosting people here for 20 years and would love to share it with you. Staying here is a wonderful experience, it is really off the beaten track so it's very tranquil and peaceful. Most people are so relaxed when they leave, its almost as if they are floating on air. It really does have a magical quality.
