About This Listing
Special one bedroom apartment in the heart of cascade canyon! Approximately 1 mile from Deer Park to catch a Mtn Biking trail (the famed 'repack' is on the return loop) or cascade canyon for fabulous hiking. .8 miles from downtown Fairfax.
It's a pleasant, clean, and unadorned space. The kitchen is usable for basic stovetop cooking. There was some ongoing noise during the day from Shawn's side of the place (guitar, tv, dog--which, by the way head's up, there's a very large and very sweet unneutered dog, Mook, on the property). For me, it worked well because I used it as a launching pad to go on day hikes in Marin (including Cascade Canyon Preserve, 1 mile walk away). I wouldn't use it as a place to really hang out a bunch in during the days.
Shawn was a gracious host and Mookie was an added benefit. The Cascade retreat was wonderful from the spacious downstairs to the lovely bedroom and amazing claw foot bathtub. The bed was super comfortable. All needs were met and more. The surrounding area and Shawn's property were serene and the perfect spot to retreat to after a long day. Thank you an dI hope to stay there again.
As advertised, this apartment is quiet and remote enough that you feel you are away from downtown traffic. The apartment has most anything you would need for a week's stay, including a small kitchenette, private bath, etc. The Internet is quite good. It's peaceful in that neck of the woods.
The Not So Good:
When I arrived, I knocked on the host's door to introduce myself. He informed me the key was under the doormat, then went back to watching TV. That struck me as a bit odd, but then, I figured maybe he's just respecting my privacy.
When I entered the apartment, there was a distinct odor of cat urine. The floors had not been swept, the toilet was dirty and the bed sheets looked as if they had not been changed.
When I informed Shawn that the toilet needed cleaning, he handed me a can of cleaner and said, "Sorry about that". It was getting late and I had no other alternatives for accommodations, so I punted. I cleaned the toilet myself, swept the apartment, brought out my own bedding and settled in for the night.
It was then that I noticed that the "Japanese style" bed was a platform with a really, really cheap mattress. A firm futon would have been great. A decent mattress just fine. But this was one of the worst beds I've ever slept on. And I've traveled to a lot of 3rd world countries.
I later asked Shawn if he had considered putting in a firmer or better quality bed and I got pretty much the same response as before. He acknowledged that another guest had left early because she couldn't sleep and then kind of shrugged it off.
In light of the extremely tight hotel / bnb market in Marin, I chose to stay the entire week that I had rented. In light of the host's rather indifferent attitude toward my concerns, I didn't think there would be any value in further pressing the point.
If you're looking for a quiet place with a private bath and a kitchenette, this will certainly satisfy your needs. But, given that airbnb prices, when you add airbnb's service fees, are darn near close to a hotel, I had expected a cleaner room and a more responsive host.
Great weekend getaway! Shawn took care of everything so it was seamless when we arrived. The apartment was well maintained and had everything we needed (huge bathroom, refrigerator, couch with HDTV). Shawn has a friendly dog named Mookie that greeted us upon arrival. The location is great and just a 5 minute drive from downtown Fairfax! Shawn never disturbed us but we knew he was there if we needed him. Overall great experience!
