TOUR IRELAND FROM THE HEART OF IRELAND!

It may be a long way to Tipperary from where you live but once you have arrived you will find yourself at the very heart of Ireland! Tipperary borders Clare, Galway, Kilkenny, Waterford, Limerick, Laois & Offaly! There is no better county from which to tour mid and Southern Ireland!

However, if you simply want to get away from it all and enjoy the simple pleasures of walking, hiking, cycling, fishing, river swimming or peaceful lounging in a quiet rural community then this rural retreat, 1km from the village and 17 km from the market town of Thurles is the perfect place. This turn of the century, stone built cottage is set along the famous Eamonn a Chnoic Walking loop which meanders around the village in the shadow of Knockalough. It is located just 4km from the renowned "Jim o' the Mill's" pub which opens its doors on Thursday nights only to host one of the last authentic house "sessions" of traditional music and song. Coincide your visit with a Thursday night if you possibly can! If you are a musician you can practice up beforehand. There is an array of musical instruments which are available by request: keyboard, guitar, and recorders/fiddles of various sizes.

This cottage, built on land donated by a neighbour with stones carried by horse and trap from nearby Templemore has been sensitively conserved & tastefully extended in recent years. It combines the convenience of a sizeable kitchen with the olde world atmosphere of turf burning stoves in rooms which have lasted more than 100 years! It sleeps 7/8 comfortably but can easily accommodate more with the use of sofa beds. It has two bathrooms, one downstairs and a room downstairs with a sofa bed which can easily convert to a temporary fifth bedroom without significantly compromising living space.

There are bikes, rubber boots, outdoor playthings, a couple of tents and fishing rods/equipment available as included extras. Let us know what you would use and we will make sure they are easily accessible to you!

Bounded by a small stream and backed by a one acre field, this house & its environs will appeal to adults of any age and accompanied children.

Your host, Grainne

The Space

It's no formula holiday house! It's got uncontrived character, history & ambience and poses a serious challenge to the determined sight seer; stay home or go touring! Most guests have vowed to return for longer so they can do a little more staying home!

Guest Access

A guest mobile phone with an Irish sim card & some credit is supplied with the house. Use it to contact me ((phone number hidden)) if you should need to or top it up with credit to make other calls.

There are bikes, fishing rods, children's playthings, a trampoline, a swing set, a tyre swing, a barbecue, a keyboard, guitar, tents, blackberry bushes in Autumn. The Eamonn a Chnoic Walking Loop is on the doorstep!

Interaction with Guests

I interact with guests at the beginning & end of their stay. I am available to chat in the middle too if guests wish. I supply a courtesy phone which can be used to contact me any time.

The Neighborhood

The peaceful pastoral views of rolling hills & Knockalough are sublime. In between the silences you'll catch the sound of birdsong, wind in the trees, & maybe some cattle uphill or an occasional tractor passing by. It's uplifting. The people are friendly & welcoming with a generosity of spirit which lingers. Last but not least there's Jim o' th Mill's! You'll never experience a Thursday quite like it!

Getting around

Local taxi available for trips into Thurles from which there is a regular train service to Dublin.

Other Things to Note

Be aware! This cottage is a LOW tech zone. One guest described his experience thus: "great not to be tempted by tv and internet"! There are radios in the cottage but the tv set plays dvd's only; no tv signal! I have a usb device which can be used with your lap top to access the net but the signal is weak & the speed slow so only recommended if it's an emergency/essential for you. Wifi is available a km away in the local pubs.

  • Grainne and Sally (the caretaker) were great hosts. They supplied us with so much information about the house, the area and beyond all of which was both necessary and useful. The house itself was fantastic - warm, welcoming and with everything we needed even some food supplies. We stocked up on food in Thurles before we got to the cottages as advised by other reviewers. It's location was rural which was what we wanted and central for driving to Cork/Blarney, Waterford and Limerack. Had a great meal at the Horse and Jockey pub in the town of the same name and great drinks at The Arch in Thurles. We really enjoyed our Winter stay and thought it would be a lovely place in Summer sitting outside at the table and chairs.

  • A wonderful cottage in rural Ireland/Tipperary that has all you need for a great stay. Location is a good base to travel in the area. The facilities and beds/bedding very nice. Plenty of room for larger groups or families with children. When we were there was no TV or WiFi which didn't bother us but is important to know if you rely on that stuff. I didn't meet Grainne but contact with her was excellent and the local caretaker Sally was very nice. This is an excellent choice if there are a few of you and your touring the area. Would also recommend to friends/family who want to get away from it and get a real rural Irish experience rather than touristy hotels and towns etc. Highly recommended.

  • I would love to spend many months living in this wonderful cottage! We only stayed one night but Grainne was so welcoming and accommodating, even leaving us some items for breakfast.

The bed was so comfortable and I had the best night's sleep there. I loved the way the entire place was decorated, it feels very bright sunny and comfortable.

I really can't say enough good things about this place or our host.

Pro-tip: It is about 30 minutes or so from Cashel, which had a decent grocery store. I didn't see any others between there and here so if you are cooking in (which is great), I'd be sure to find a grocery store before you get into Upperchurch.

  • Had a lovely stay in the turf burning cottage and can definitely recommend it if you are looking for a quaint cottage stay. There is plenty of space and the cottage has all mod cons while still retaining an authenic feel. The cottage was clean and tidy and had everything I think a family might need for a relaxing holiday.

  • I wanted to visit the Ireland that the people on the tour bus do not see. I found "the turf burning cottage" that peeked my interest. My planning began months befors the actule trip would begin. Grainne was so helpful at every step along the way. I don't do computers well and when the AIRBNB web site defeated me Grainne walked me through the difficult parts. Sshe sent me information about the area and let the town folk know we were comming. Upperchurch is a very small village. If you want to get away from the city this is the place to be. The cottage was very laarge and comfortalbe. My travel compains changed several time during the planning process and three months before I was to go I got cancer. So my trip began the day after I completed radiation therpy. Grainne kept in touch every monthe prior to our trip. It ended up there were three of us at the cottage. We had way too much room. I would not hesitate to have as many as 8 people staying at the cottage. More if you have children. I knew the cottage was in the country but I did not know it was a mile up a one lane read with headges on both sides. That really added to the Ireland experience. We did day trips to Cliffs of Hoher, Waterford, Cork, Rock of Cachel and many other places. It was great to come "home" every night. We ate most of our meals at the cottage. There were some staples there, we bought potatos, milk and eggs. Con Ryan spent a day with us showing us around the area and sharing his stories. And your visit would not be complete without going to 'Jim O'the Pub" on Thursday night. You will love every minute of the evening, but bring your sining voice.

  • The cottage in Upperchurch was a highlight of my family trip in Ireland. It was an excellent value for the price and the best tasting water of all the places we visited in Ireland. A very peaceful and relaxing environment and a great place to stay with children. The location was great for day trips to some great locations. The beds were great and everything about our stay was excellent. Next time I come I will stay for longer. Grainne's is a great hostess and i hope to return.
