The space

It's no formula holiday house! It's got uncontrived character, history & ambience and poses a serious challenge to the determined sight seer; stay home or go touring! Most guests have vowed to return for longer so they can do a little more staying home!

Guest access

A guest mobile phone with an Irish sim card & some credit is supplied with the house. Use it to contact me if you should need to or top it up with credit to make other calls.

There are bikes, fishing rods, children's playthings, a tyre swing, a barbecue, a keyboard, guitar, tents, blackberry bushes in Autumn. The Eamonn a Chnoic Walking Loop is on the doorstep!

Interaction with guests

I interact with guests at the beginning & end of their stay. I am available to chat in the middle too if guests wish. I supply a courtesy phone which can be used to contact me any time.

The neighborhood

The peaceful pastoral views of rolling hills & Knockalough are sublime. In between the silences you'll catch the sound of birdsong, wind in the trees, & maybe some cattle uphill or an occasional tractor passing by. It's uplifting. The people are friendly & welcoming with a generosity of spirit which lingers. Last but not least there's Jim o' th Mill's! You'll never experience a Thursday quite like it!

Getting around

Local taxi available for trips into Thurles from which there is a regular train service to Dublin.

Other things to note

Be aware! This cottage is a LOW tech zone. One guest described his experience thus: "great not to be tempted by tv and internet"! There are radios in the cottage but the tv set plays dvd's only; no tv signal! I have a usb device which can be used with your lap top to access the net but the signal is weak & the speed slow so only recommended if it's an emergency/essential for you. Wifi is available a km away in the local pubs.

Grainne's house was perfect for our visit. We were a family group of 3 adults and 5 kids and it slept us very comfortably. We were there 4 nights in April visiting family nearby. Thank you to Sally for being flexible for our arrival (flight was delayed and then car hire problems!). Good directions to the house. Everything was there that we needed, bedding, towels, lots of stuff was very helpfully provided like washing up liquid, tea towels, etc. Lots of helpful info and tips were in the relevant places. We had a bit of 'user error' with the gas but Grainne was contactable and helped us sort it out straight away. Loved the slippers/crocs/wellies. The heating worked a treat and made the kitchen/diner nice and cosy. The kids loved exploring the field at the back and having a go on the tyre swings. They didn't miss having a tv/wifi with all the great books, games and lego there. They did watch a dvd on the (seriously retro) tv one night though which worked fine (you need to use the remote control to play the dvd). It was a lovely peaceful location and there was a happy feel to the house. Don't forget to go outside and look at the stars - so bright!! Would definitely stay again on our next visit, and the kids will be older so we also want to try some of the nearby walks and bike trails. Tesco in Thurles is open til 9pm most nights for groceries, and we had a couple of meals in Thurles too. Thanks so much! Rachel and co

Grainne's cottage in Upperchurch was perfect for our family. I was traveling with my husband, son, mom, sister and brother in law. There were plenty of bedrooms (4) and beds to fit our needs. The house was also very quiet. Frequently my son and I retired quite early while everyone else stayed up and talked. The layout of rooms upstairs and downstairs made it so quiet even when people were awake and enjoying conversation late into the night. Grainne met us at the cottage and had gone above and beyond by purchasing quite a few groceries for our stay. She had researched different activities, sporting events and natural food stores for us ahead of time and had all the information ready for us when we arrived. The cottage was the perfect place for our almost 2 year old son too. There were some fun toys (plastic shovels and rakes, and a toy tractor) in one of the sheds that he loved. The composting method was super fun for him as well. We told him we were feeding the bunnies and it became a nightly ritual to bring the compost out, and call the bunnies to dinner. And the bunnies in Ireland, they are way better than the bunnies in Maryland, US ;) The location is perfect if you want to see a variety of sites and visit a wide range if Ireland. My sister, brother in law, and mom made a long day trip (3 or so hours one way) to the Dingle Peninsula. We made a day trips to Cork, Tullamore, Kilkenny, and many local attractions. Grainne had a binder full of suggestions and information about surrounding sites. But it was so nice to come back to the cottage and chat with each other about what we had seen and done each day. I highly recommend a visit to Paddy's for the Wi-Fi and friendly conversation as well as a Thursday night visit to Jim o' Mills. Enjoy!

Wonderfully centrally located home for our first visit to Ireland. We were able to make day trips to southern locations. We followed other recommendations and bought groceries in Thurles on our way. Had dinner one night at the Horse and Jockey which was wonderful. Don't miss Birrs Castle if you enjoy beautiful walks. Sally was very helpful and we appreciated having a few essentials in the house when we arrived. It felt mor like home than a rental. No frills just a comfortable place to call "home" while we were there. We love Jim O the Mills on Thurs evening! Loved getting a feel for the local culture. Thanks so much to Grainne and Sally.

Grainne and Sally (the caretaker) were great hosts. They supplied us with so much information about the house, the area and beyond all of which was both necessary and useful. The house itself was fantastic - warm, welcoming and with everything we needed even some food supplies. We stocked up on food in Thurles before we got to the cottages as advised by other reviewers. It's location was rural which was what we wanted and central for driving to Cork/Blarney, Waterford and Limerack. Had a great meal at the Horse and Jockey pub in the town of the same name and great drinks at The Arch in Thurles. We really enjoyed our Winter stay and thought it would be a lovely place in Summer sitting outside at the table and chairs.

A wonderful cottage in rural Ireland/Tipperary that has all you need for a great stay. Location is a good base to travel in the area. The facilities and beds/bedding very nice. Plenty of room for larger groups or families with children. When we were there was no TV or WiFi which didn't bother us but is important to know if you rely on that stuff. I didn't meet Grainne but contact with her was excellent and the local caretaker Sally was very nice. This is an excellent choice if there are a few of you and your touring the area. Would also recommend to friends/family who want to get away from it and get a real rural Irish experience rather than touristy hotels and towns etc. Highly recommended.

I would love to spend many months living in this wonderful cottage! We only stayed one night but Grainne was so welcoming and accommodating, even leaving us some items for breakfast. The bed was so comfortable and I had the best night's sleep there. I loved the way the entire place was decorated, it feels very bright sunny and comfortable. I really can't say enough good things about this place or our host. Pro-tip: It is about 30 minutes or so from Cashel, which had a decent grocery store. I didn't see any others between there and here so if you are cooking in (which is great), I'd be sure to find a grocery store before you get into Upperchurch.

Had a lovely stay in the turf burning cottage and can definitely recommend it if you are looking for a quaint cottage stay. There is plenty of space and the cottage has all mod cons while still retaining an authenic feel. The cottage was clean and tidy and had everything I think a family might need for a relaxing holiday.
