About this listing
Faya Lobi has two floors and is about 200 meters from the beautiful, long sandy beaches of Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge in the small village of Manzanillo on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast. A perfect spot for a beach and nature vacation near Puerto Viejo. The beach in Manzanillo is fantastic! You can walk kilometers in both directions.
Once in the Wildlife Refuge there are many trees where you can find sloths, howler monkeys and toucans, just to name a few because there are obviously many more species.
There are two terraces (above and below) where you can lie in the hammock or sit in one of the seats to enjoy the peace and tranquility.
The bedrooms are surrounded by a beautiful landscape and the building has an open structure which one can enjoy the outdoors. Each bedroom has a bathroom with toilet, sink, a nice hot water shower (non electric!), spacious, handmade mosquito netting and fan. The four bedrooms on the top floor is good for 8 sleeps.
In the bedroom on the ground floor may also sleep two. Bed linen and towels are provided.
There is a fully equipped kitchen (toast oven, fridge / freezer, coffee maker, kettle, rice cooker, iron grill, gas cooker, juicer, pots, plates, cutlery, cups and glasses) is located between the bedrooms to prepare your breakfast, lunch or dinner while simultaneously enjoying the view of our garden which is very likely that there may be a hummingbird flies by or a howler is hanging in one of the trees in the backyard. There is also the possibility to watch television via satellite or using your laptop via our wifi system. There is a selection of small supermarkets just minutes walk to do your shopping. There are several restaurant (s) and sodas to find around the corner when you do not want to cook.
On the ground floor is a terras with chairs and a hammock looking out over the garden with tropical flowers, plants and trees. There are several books you can read at your leisure or you can even make an exchange for one of your books.
Parking is available on site for several cars / RV / boat / trailer.
We offer free wifi for 4 laptops at the house.
Internet and / or wifi are present within walking distance in the nearby pizzeria, an ice cream shop or Maxi’s restaurant.
If you have any problems or questions during your visit, our house manager Katherine will be just a few steps away from you as she stays at the rear of the house where there is a private entrance to our home so your privacy will be maintained.
Although the house is built to accommodate 8-10 people , still even for couples, smaller groups or families it’s ideal because of it’s cozy bedrooms and the separate comfortable living room and open plan kitchen. The house is only 200 meters from the white sandy beach, surrounded by beautiful countryside.
We only accept cash payments or a Paypal payment against a fee of $20. The closest ATM is in downtown Puerto Viejo. So please ensure you bring enough cash with you to enjoy your stay.
You can get local buses to Manzanillo or we can organise an air conditioned shuttle to pick you up at the airport for $55 or your Hotel in San Jose for $45 and drop you off at Casa Faya Lobi (please ask in time for any arrangements).

Overall the stay was okay. They gave us a reasonable rate compared to their listed price, but I would certainly not even pay that again to stay there unless many improvements were made. I was not looking for a perfect air-conditioned condo....but expected everything to be in working order at least. No huge issues, but listed below are some of the minor issues that we had, and below that is the owner's responses for all of them:
1*Internet only worked in a couple areas, and not in ANY of the upstairs bedrooms.
2*roof leaked when it rained so there were no dry places to sit. 3*Most of the bathroom and bedroom lights were very very dim and it was very hard to see.
4*One bathroom shower was not draining at all and leaves about four inches of standing water.
5*There were MANY cockroaches and even more ants. This is disgusting and I feel it is unacceptable since they could be sprayed for. We also went up into the Jungle to sleep for a night in basically a shack, and there were fewer cockroaches there, because the people had sprayed.
6*The TV was never working throughout our stay, owner let me know the day we got there.
7*stovetop is old and difficult to light, the knives are rusty, the downstairs bedroom smells like mildew, the fans in most rooms are inefficient, the main rooms could use fans, etc. Uncomfortable sleeping with tiny desk fan.
1* "The internet is something we cannot control as the cables all are connected by the ICE. Of course not every device will have a good reception because of the metal roof and it depends on how many devices at one time will be used."
2* Guests from Belgium "sat outside for 4 days during heavy rain and this gave no problems."
3* "The Watt of the light bulbs are the strongest we could get. Than we need to change the whole lamp."
4* Owner said we should have told them sooner - true.
5*"Ants and even cockroaches seek for dry places during the rain. Bugs fly in because it is an open area. It certainly has nothing to do with the house not being clean enough. We do not spray all the time because it is first of all very toxic but second there can be a periods that some insects are more around than normal."
6* The television needs to be bought in a place pretty far away And since Katherine has no car she has to go by bus. Asap in Costa Rica, Caribbean doesn't mean in the same week. With a car 'yes'"
7*"A closed house with airconditioning is the only way to keep out most of the bugs and the humidity wich causes rust in a very short time. Such as the stove, than we need to replace it every month.
We will ask Katherine to look at the knives you were talking about so she could replace them. "
We both were waiting a bit on this type of review from Leah because we did not accept the requirement to pay back half the money at the end of the week. We weren't notified earlier that week about your issues even after asking you if everything was okay.
We still believe that the house is in a good condition. Patricia has been at the house herself just two weeks before you were coming and worked hard to make the house look as good and pleasant as possible. Guests before were very pleased therefor most things on your list came as a big surprise to us. We have given a very good offer. You slept for $ 14 per person a night with a discount of more than $200 on that week.
We do like to apologize for the television that did not work and also wasn't replaced during that same week.
The house is always super clean (something were Katherine, our house manager is very keen on) and if there is an occasional ant or cockroach that comes along it has nothing to do with the house not being clean but because the house is situated in the wild life refuge which is on the edge of the jungle. And we are not a fan to spray constantly with poison. We went living there to enjoy nature and not to destroy it. As you said it yourself even after spraying there were LESS ants and cockroaches, the poison never can't kill them all.
But there are some tips were we will take a closer look at such as the lamps in the bathrooms and to buy a new stove which will look nicer. Katherine will take care of it.
Cool place to be in Manzanillo, its nice and quiet in the back of the town. We really enjoyd that the house was open, because its hot&humid at the caribeen coast!
We were very lucky that it didnt rain in the 5days we stayed theire.
Thank you and best wishes
The house was more than described. The longer I was there the more I loved the place. Sitting in the open living area at night, drinking a pina colada, overlooking the beautiful lighted landscaping, was magical.
I could say more about the tropical layed back atmosphere of Manzanillo but my future plans to come back next year say it all.
Patricia and Michael were very helpful during the booking process and gave us really good tips of nearby areas and tips. They are really nice people, the house has a great price and is 300 meters from the beach. Very secure, quiet and has great common areas. We did a BBQ one night and it was awesome, I would recommend this house for sure.
I have traveled to Costa Rica many times but had never been to the Caribbean side. I've also been to Bocas del toro and absolutely love it, so was very interested to see how the Caribbean side would be. My friends and I are also at the point in traveling that we prefer to be a bit off the beaten path. ..so therefore we decided on manzanillo.
It was prefect for us. It felt like a small town where everyone knows each other. There are a few grocery stores near by, couple restaurants, a place to rent bikes, and of course the beautiful beach. We opted to not rent a car as we were flying to limon from sjo and it was perfectly fine. We rode our bikes and took the bus everywhere. We stopped in puerto veijo to get some groceries on the way as some of the stores in town don't have everything we wanted. The ride from limon is about $100usd each way.
The owners of the house and Katherine were very helpful and friendly. A couple of times we needed Katherine's help and she was very quick to help. ..but not all in our business all the time.
The house was add described and very clean. You can tell they care about their house. The house was also stocked with small appliances (coffee maker, toaster oven, blender ) and plenty of other amenities. Overall, it was a very nice place to stay and I would recommend and stay there again!
10 people stayed at the house. It was very comfortable and spacious. Very close to the beach and some shops and small restaurants. A 15 minute hike took us to beautiful beaches with lots of corals for snorkling. Katherine the house keeper was great and resolved a couple of issues we had immediately. The house does need some work on the gutters when it rains really hard and some of the kitchen ware needs an upgrade. Overall we had a great time! Will definetly come back next year!
Thank you Carlos!
We did work on it right away: blender, new water cooker, plates, etc. New bed and matresses in the room below.
Only the gutter problem is something we need to take a good look at and probably need a change of system.
Thanks again for your stay with us and hope to meet you next year in person.

We had a great experience at casa Faya Lobi from December 16-19th. The owners couldn't be there but Katherine welcomed us. The villa was very clean and we enjoyed an amazing diner with fresh fish and lobster fished by a local fisherman. The opened house is well equipped but be prepared to get up early with nature sounds. Thanks for this great experience

About the Host, Patricia And Michiel
My Husband, Michiel Nelissen and I started 5 years ago with our business in the small fishermans village Manzanillo. We are very grateful that we found this place. Beautiful beaches, surrounded by a magnificent tropical rainforest with lots of wildlife to discover.
We managed to get in very good contact with the locals whom are glad to give you a hand if you need it. In the meantime our baby boy got born in October 2010. He enjoys the outdoor life style too, playing on the beach with other children, having a stroll and just having fun by being outside.
