Roads are bad in costa Rica and especially around Tamarindo. It can take you at least one hour to do Playa Negra-Tamarindo in case of rains, our district has only dirt roads, from Paraiso to Tamarindo (but they are rebuilding the road now). We strongly recommend to rent a car to be free of moving to not depend of some expensive taxis. After Paraiso and Tamarindo, public transport is non-existent. If you're looking for the crowd and for nightlife, this is not the place. Even if the place has all modern conveniences, it is surrounded with the wild, and more recommended for people looking for this kind of tourism.
Yvan's place is quiet, clean and comfortable. It is out of the way but still within walking distance to Playa Negra and some great restaurants and cafes. If you are looking for nightlife this is not the place, but for a more traditional Costa Rican experience this is great!
My partner and I enjoyed our time in Playa Negra at Yvan's cabin in November. The cabin was clean and comfortable and the outside kitchen was adequate.
During our stay, Yvan's parents were staying on the property as well. They were very friendly and quickly helped with a couple minor issues that arose.
Potential tenants should note that it might be a wet or muddy walk to the beach, but the beach is beautiful and the waves are great. The outside kitchen has a lot of ants walking around everywhere and lacks some utensils which you may desire, but it is still accommodating. There were a lot of ants and millipedes and the occasional scorpion in and around the cabin, but was still comfortable.
We did not have a vehicle, so we took a bus into Paraiso, and all of our travel around Playa Negra was by foot. This may be an area where it is better to have a vehicle, but it was still enjoyable and navigable without. The walk to the beach involved two small creek crossings and took about 20 minutes. The local markets did not have too much but, for less than a week there, it was sufficient. We supplemented our diet with a stop at Kon Tiki for two AMAZING stone oven pizzas (Margharita and Vegetarian).
We recommend.a stop in this beautiful area of Costa Rica.
What a great place! Bright, spacious, clean, warm and welcoming house for ourselves. It was like home away from home. Good vibes! Lovely house located in a nice leafy place, just a few minutes walk from the beach. The house itself is huge and has a very, very comfortable bed. . Yvan wasn't there but it was a real pleasure to chat with his parents and we loved their gorgeous place. First thing you notice is how much attention and love the hosts put into their home.
All in all, great hosts, wonderful stay and definitely recommended for others.
I agree with other reviews, it's a complete paradise. I stayed with Ivan and his family for a whole month and will remember my stay as a very happy time. Beautifully maintained property with attentive helpful hosts. The place is peaceful, quiet, clean and comfortable equipped with everything you need for a carefree vacation.
we lost a lot of time to find the house, it was behind many many trees, impossible to whatch it from the street. there wasn't any indications and nobody knew the place.. We find it only for luck!!.. In conclusion the place was a corner of paradise, everything was ok.. The bungalovs were simply beautifull and cleaned.. if you go there ask for Yvan the french guy.. great person and very very kind
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful experience at Yvan place. It is difficult to find but once your there it is a beautiful place. It is clean, charming and the bathroom is so nice. We loved it and wish we would have spent more time there. Totally worth it!
Yvan and his parents were very helpful with anything I needed. The breakfast they provide with a small few was amazing. I spent 4 days in the $25 cabin. I felt very secure and safe on the property. I came to the cabin without a car with no problems. I took the bus from San Jose to Santa Cruz than took a taxi into Playa Negra. There I had to get the directions from Yvan to find the place. Its definitely off the beaten path, but very tranquilo and worth every penny. A couple minute walk to the beach with a nice reef break and sand break surf. You can rent surfboards for $15 a day from both shops and the surf is pretty consistent. I will def recommend this cabin to friends and family.
GREAT EXPERIENCE! Yvan was not actually there himself, but his parents that live in a house right by were absolutely wonderful hosts! They made me fish one day for lunch, gave me rides to Santa Cruz for the bus and grocery shopping, and just genuinely great people.
As far as the place itself, it was lovely. I couldn't have asked for a more tranquil environment. Even though I had rented to little blue cabina, I ended up staying in the bigger house since no one was there and it meant access to a kitchen.. It's a spacious, gorgeously decorated wooden house, with a fully equipped kitchen, clean and organized, showers with warm water, laundry machine available too! Everything was pretty much perfect. Yvan's mom is a wonderful artist and her beautiful paintings on the walls make the house feel very welcoming and cared for.
The beach is about a 15 minute walk and within the area there are various restaurants and a couple of shops for groceries. The hotel on the beach has dance and yoga classes, which are open to the public, and a nice restaurant as well.
Overall, Yvan's place is highly recommended.
