I really enjoyed my stay at Chez JJ in Mountain View. It was great company, including friendly golden retriever and border collie. There are 3 permanent residents there who manage the place and are just nice and easy-going (Jocelyn lives at another house). Everyone hung out a lot in the big kitchen/common area, as well as going out together. The house is very comfortable: it's very clean, the bunk room is kept quiet so there was no problem sleeping, there are two bathrooms and plenty of closet space with shelving to put suitcases and unpack, and wonderful yard with fruit trees. Contrary to popular expectation, it was not all 25-year-old guys, but it was half women when I stayed there, and included non-hacker scientists and an architecture student. Only minus was that the dishwasher was often too full so that dishes piled up around the sink -- hopefully they'll figure out a policy to rectify that. Otherwise, I will certainly stay there again next time I'm in town!
Really had a great time.
Super nice people.
Spontaneous White Boarding.
Old man dog.
I stayed at Chez JJ Mountain View for my summer internship at Nest labs, and they do a great job. Good, interesting conversations with the housemates, we took turns buying cookies for people to share, and it's not too far away from Castro St or the train station. Guests to the house (for staying or playing a weekend game of Magic) were friendly and had cool jobs to hear about, and I even made friends with the Chez JJ San Francisco folks on my trips up there.
If you really, really have troubles sleeping with noise, the bunk room might not be for you – but I didn't need the (provided) ear plugs and had a great time, so it wasn't a big deal for me. If you stay here, my one piece of advice is to take advantage of the good advice you'll get during your stay from a bunch of really smart people. Maybe I'll see you around next time I stay!
Exactly as advertised and quite good! Hosts and other guests were hospitable, location excellent for Mountain View startups. I was able to be a lot of work done and slept as well as anyone could expect in a six person bunk-bedded room.
This was my second time at Chez JJ, and it was just as awesome as the first. The place feels even more homely than last time (two adorable dogs! fruit in the garden! paintings on the walls!), and as always the house was a fantastic environment for meeting other hackers, engineers, and entrepreneurs. The kitchen is great and the bedding is a huge step up from any hostel or motel I've stayed at. The train station is still a long-ish walk and the shared dorm room is a little cluttered, but both are small prices to pay for the connections and friends I've made here. If you have any startup aspirations, I can highly recommend Chez JJ!
I very much enjoyed being part of the highly interesting and talented network of people that stayed in the whose while I was there. Startup ideas were exchanged and debated; new ideas and collaborations were born. Camaraderie in the house was excellent as well. I will be back!! ;)
Great place to stay if you are an intern in the area. You will meet a lot of cool people. Would definitely stay again.
Cool people, beautiful bright house, very chill vibe
Chez JJ is an awesome place to stay if you're a hacker and/or someone with entrepreneurial tendencies -- just by sitting in the living room it felt like I was meeting new and interesting people each day!
The house itself is pretty great as well -- it's never too warm or cold, the bathrooms are nicely appointed, and the kitchen is spacious. It's busy and there isn't an abundance of privacy, but I enjoyed that; the only con I found was the long (25 min) walk to downtown Mountain View and the train station.
The house is clean and warm, the hosts are hospitable, and the company is nice and interesting. Recommended!
