There are usually a few people around. so it`s easy to find company to have a drink or go out exploring with.

The neighborhood

Leme neighborhood, in Copacabana, is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Rio, a very quiet quarter at the very end of Avenida Atlantica.

Just behind Leme, on the hillside with the same name (Morro do Leme), we find the twin favelas of Chapéu Mangueira and Babilonia.

That is where we are!

The twin communities are widely recognized as some of the most beautiful and peaceful in Rio. They are quite small, with only about 5000 people in total, and surrounded by an environmentally protected area at the top of the hill.

These communities where some of the first in Rio to receive a UPP Station -Pacifying Police Units - in 2009. There are plenty of hostels in the area and people are very used to having tourists around.

Built on a lush green hillside just 200 yards from the beach, offering amazing views and a quiet environment, they have been an attraction for tourists and foreign press for many years.

Within the community, you can find some very nice options for inexpensive restaurants and even pizza delivery. The highlight being the famous Bar do David.

Restaurants, banks, pharmacies, supermarkets, and other services are abundant in Leme neighborhood, just down the stairs.

Getting around

Come to Leme neighborhood in Copacabana.
Then take the Ladeira Ary Barroso (street name) up to the favela, and turn right at the first opportunity to the entrance of the Chapéu Mangueira community.
You can walk, take a taxi or a moto taxi to that point.
The best reference is the famous Bar do David, which is right at the entrance and will be our meeting point.
From there it`s just a short walk to the house.

There is a set of stairs just in front of the house that leads you through the favela onto the main street (Rua Gustavo Sampaio, in front of n.155) in just a couple of minutes.

From there:

- In Avenida Atlantica there are Bus connections to Copacabana, Ipanema, Maracana, Botafogo, Centro, etc.

- In Avenida Princesa Isabel (10 min walk) there are many bus connections to all parts of town.

- Taxis and mototaxis available 24 hours in Rua Gustavo Sampaio (Leme)

- Nearest Metro Station is Cardeal Arcoverde (20 min walk)

Other things to note

We have developed a very special relationship with the neighbors here in Chapéu Mangueira. We encourage our clients to interact with the locals, and urge them to be respectful of the local culture.

Hi, my name is João.

I come from Portugal and have been living in Brazil for a few years.

Since 2013 i have been hosting foreign tourists and students in this 7 bedroom Guesthouse, located in a small favela called Chapéu Mangueira, in Leme (Copacabana).

Here you can find affordable accommodation, in comfort and safety, and also have a fantastic insight into one of the most fascinating favelas of Rio de Janeiro, with it`s lively atmosphere and amazing views.

Chapéu Mangueira is a small community, the smallest favela in Rio`s Zona Sul, with only around 1500 people. The atmosphere is really friendly, a small village feel, where most people know each other and help out their neighbors.

I have fallen in love with the community, as have many tourists and others who decided to stay for a while.

The house has a superb location, with fantastic views over the ocean and Copacabana, and very close to all the facilities of Leme neighborhood and the beach.

It has been a great experience to host people from all over the world, different cultures, languages, sharing experiences in Rio and within the community.

I feel privileged to have the opportunity to share all the great things about the favela lifestyle and culture. and to make my guests feel at home in the community.

I am also more than happy to help my guests get around town and enjoy a magnificent time in Rio, and hopefully learn a little bit of portuguese in the process.

See you soon in Rio!
