An area filled with history:
The Templars headquarters was built here in the 12th century. It sheltered the Templar’s treasury, until 13 Oct. 1307 when all Templars were arrested on the same day nationwide (known as the largest police operation ever and origin of Friday the 13th). The temple house was then used throughout centuries as a jail until Louis XVI, the last king of France was kept there with Marie-Antoinette before being taken to the guillotine.
The Temple house was then destructed after the French revolution as the fear was that it became a royalist pilgrimage. Today the only remaining signs of the Templars presence are embeded in the buildings of the area, a full size floorplan of the Temple tower painted on the pavement by the city hall and a memorial plate with a map of the old Temple buildings.
In a more recent history, n°14 Corderie Street was the headquarters of riotters "Communards" during the attempt revolution of 1871, known as "Commune de Paris".
The Temple area now consists of the English-style Temple square, the Eiffel-like steel structure temple market (Carreau du Temple), the classical 19th century 3rd district city hall, a superior school of design (école Duperrée), restaurants, art galleries, shops and a few private apartments, including our Studio, which faces the temple market and the school of design.
