Amazing location five blocks from University Ave and the bustling activity in downtown Palo Alto. An easy 20min stroll or 10min bike ride gets you on Stanford campus. Charming and peaceful oasis in a quiet residential neighborhood. Iris House is a painted lady Victorian with beautiful gardens and colorful artwork. Garden Room features a window seat, lots of light and a separate entrance.
Wonderful retreat for most, but please read our house guidelines to see if it is right for your needs.
Downtown Palo Alto is a lively hub of restaurants, shops, theaters, cafes, boutiques, high tech start-ups and venture capital offices. With a Caltrain station and lots of bus routes, it is easily accessible and and a convenient launch pad for local exploration. Stanford University is right next door, with all of its programs, research facilities, museums, hospitals and amazing resources. Stanford Shopping Center is a browser/buyer’s paradise and there are other commercial areas in walking distance. The whole area is a walker/bicyclist’s dream, with quiet tree-lined streets and lots to see/do.
Our Iris House is a charming remodeled painted lady Victorian in downtown Palo Alto five blocks from University Avenue and a quick mile from Stanford University. Recently totally remodeled, it combines charm and color with modern conveniences and comfortable details. The gardens are full of irises, restful seating, and wonderful scents. There are stained glass iris accents throughout, the guest areas are welcoming, and the rooms are airy and peaceful.
It is a very quiet residential neighborhood with sidewalks and white picket fences and neighbors who know each other. Safe and peaceful.
In our Garden Room, you will enjoy a light and airy space with a comfy window seat and lots of windows facing out on to the back garden. You'll dream the night away in a full size bed with new mattress, pillows and linens. Freshly painted and decorated with original art, the room is stocked with a library about Palo Alto, the birthplace of Silicon Valley. If you need it, the room has lots of storage along with a microwave. You will have your own entrance if you want extra privacy.
The bathroom next door is shared, but there are two other bathrooms in the house and therefore no conflicts.
This room is our largest and most comfortable and ideal for longer visits. If you are interested in more budget options or this one is not available for your dates, please look at:

We have three outdoor seating areas surrounded by a colorful native and drought-tolerant garden for the guests to enjoy. Guests are also welcome to lounge in the living room with couches, piano, and friendly dog companion. The porch rockers and a comfy yard swing are other favorite hang-outs.
Very limited kitchen access (guest coffee/tea area with fruits and treats plus a guest fridge and microwave) unless otherwise arranged.
Bike rental (with helmet and lock) and laundry services available for an additional charge upon request.
I can arrange laundry for $5/load and there are irons available for guests.
I can also arrange for guest passes to a local gym and make reservations at the nearby massage spa.
Interaction with guests
I work from home and am very available to help you plan out your adventures, chose the tastiest dining sites, and otherwise enjoy your visit.
Other things to note
Each room is for ONE guest only. We do not allow children or other additional guests in the room.
We have a 20lb muttadoodle (hypo-allergenic) rescue puppy named Julie who is very affectionate and loves laps. While she may bark at strangers approaching the house, it is usually with her tail wagging up a storm and she is exceedingly friendly to our guests.
Parking is free and plentiful on the street right in front of the house. Outside of school hours, there is also a small parking lot across the street. I park my car on the street and neither I nor any guests have ever had issues with security/availability. There is no parking actually on the premises (small lot covered with garden and house).
I run a PG-13 rated household to ensure that my son and all guests are comfortable staying here. This means:
No smoking, vaping, drugs or drinking on the property.
No visitors to your bedroom without my explicit and prior permission. Visitors are welcome to socialize with you in the public guest areas except during quiet hours (see below.)
Drunken guests or visitors are not allowed on the property. If you get drunk during your stay, you will have to find somewhere else to stay until you are sober.
Check-in: Standard is between 4-8pm – please contact me with your travel details so that I know the approximate time to expect you. You are welcome to contact me to see if an earlier check-in time might be available (typically depends on when the prior guest leaves, when I have time to turn the room, and what my daily schedule is like, but I try to accommodate when possible.) If you are going to be arriving after 8pm, please contact me by phone so that I can walk you through self-check-in procedures.
Check-out: Please vacate your room by 10am on the day you are checking out. It is greatly appreciated if you would place all of your trash in the can provided and leave your towel hanging on the door (vs wet on your bed .) You may arrange with me to leave your packed bags in the living room until later in the day if you are not leaving the area until the evening.
Quiet time is between 9pm-7:00am. Please have your phones on vibrate, use headphones for media and be quiet coming and going during those hours. Be aware of the fact that there are multiple rooms with guests on different sleep cycles and with different work schedules. If you need to make a phone call during these quiet hours, please keep your voice down and/or take the call outside and be respectful of your environment.
Breakfast: You are welcome to make yourself a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate and partake in the fruit and treats my son often bakes and sets out next to the coffee maker on the counter (the young chef’s welcomes contributions from those so inclined in his tip jar.) There is a guest fridge and freezer in the back yard where you can store items during your stay – though please put your name and date on them so that I can ensure the contents stay relevant.
