About this listing
PLEASE NOTE: During the peak summer months I only rent rooms out a week in advance due to the fact that I often rent the entire house (unless you are only staying during weekdays, in which case I may be able to reserve those much further in advance). In addition to a separate listing for the entire house, I have this bedroom and a separate listing for a double room available in my beautiful Colonial Revival home. This bedroom has two comfortable twin sized mattresses and is furnished with antique cannon ball style beds, a nightstand and a small set of drawers for storage. It accommodates 1-2 people.
There is a shared full bath with a shower and two sinks on the second floor as well as a spacious, newly renovated half bathroom on the first floor.
I am two blocks from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and a five minute walk from Main Street, the heart of downtown North Adams. You would be a 15 minute walk to Mass MoCA or a 15 minute drive to the Clark Art Institute and Williams College in Williamstown. There are over a dozen restaurants within walking distance as well as a Planet Fitness gym, grocery store, shops and galleries. Windsor Lake is a 15 minute walk or less than a 5 minute drive and the perfect place for an early morning or end of day swim.
You have full access to a modernized, well-outfitted kitchen and all common areas; including a formal dining room with the added warmth of a fireplace insert (if you enjoy the warmth and crackle of a fireplace) or two living rooms, one with a pellet stove. Feel free to throw a few logs on the fire, plug your laptop into the flat screen tv and stereo and kick your feet up to watch a movie, surf the web via my wireless connection or just read a book.
You'll be sharing the house with me (a single, professional gay male in my 40s) and my very friendly and entertaining, hypo-allergenic dog (a cockapoo). We are both very easy going and respectful of other people's space and needs.
I'm listing my two rooms at very reasonable prices simply because I am currently wrapping up some remodeling projects which include an updated half bathroom, a complete exterior paint job (about 95% finished), an updated kitchen & pantry and a refinished entry staircase. The 1940s elevator should be back in action sometime within 2013.
Offstreet parking is available and there is a large front porch for soaking in some sun or just catching a breath of fresh air. My home is a non-smoking environment, although smokers may use the yard and/or porch for smoking. If you're visiting family or friends and would like to host a meal or gathering at the house, I'm open to that for an additional fee.
I am a very social, outgoing person and consider myself to be fairly laid back and easy going. I'll be glad to help make sure your visit to the Berkshires is an enjoyable one and I'm happy to do my best at answering any questions you may have about the area. You're welcome to use the living rooms, dining room and kitchen as well as all outdoor spaces whenever you'd like. All I ask is that you clean up after yourself and respect my home while you enjoy it.
You're welcome to drink alcohol responsibly while staying in my home, and honestly, if you find yourself at a local bar after a few too many you can call me and I'll gladly arrange a taxi or pick you up myself. It's only a 10 minute walk to downtown North Adams so in the warmer months it's very easy to leave the car at home and stroll downtown anyway.
My home is a drug-free, non-smoking environment although you're welcome to smoke outside on the front porch or on the patio in the back yard. All I ask is that you dispose of any matches or butts in the trash.
Please be careful not to let the dog out and to lock up when you venture out during your stay. I'll either make sure I'm at home or will provide you with a key so you can come and go as you please.
My wife and I spent three nights at Kurt's home during Williams parents' weekend. Kurt was a great host, and made sure we were comfortable.
The locations is great. Easy access to Williams College. Very close to downtown North Adams, where you can find some great places to eat and shop.
This is the second time we have stayed there. He is a wonderful person, and it was a pleasure to stay there again.

I had a wonderful experience with Kurt. His home is beautiful and the room was exactly as described. The room was spotless and sheets were fresh out of the dryer. Kurt was friendly and accommodating. He spent time with us going over the various food options in town. I definitely recommend this listing!
My son is a freshman at MCLA and I was coming to visit with my girlfriend midweek to hear the Jeff Corwin lecture and see my son. Kurt was a wonderfully charming host- recommending good restaurants with vegetarian options and communicating with us through out the checkin in process. The house is lovely full of fabulous artwork and a cool collection of chairs. We were enjoying a glass of wine in the living room when he returned from his evening and proposed making brownies. Wow- that is the cherry on the sunday to enjoy hot brownies, sitting by the woodstove and having great conversation with our host until the wee hours. Thank you Kurt. You WILL see me again soon and I will recommend your house to other MCLA families.
What to say about Kurt and Uli? Just read all the other comments, there's not a lot to add: they are great hosts, very supportive and courteous. The house is great and cozy, downtown North Adams is just a stone's throw away. Kurt knows a lot about the history and what's going on today in NA. He'll be glad to tell you how to get to the North Adams Museum of History and Science, a very special and unique little gem. I also followed his advice where to have dinner and had the best spaghetti sauce in ages. When I get the chance to go to North Adams again (which I should, because Mass MOCA was just too huge to finish in one day), I'll definitely stay with Kurt and Uli again. Conclusion: Airbnb at it's best.
Kurt's home is beautiful and comfortable and he is an extremely gracious host. He readily shared his knowledge of the area and provided all sorts of travel tips and suggestions for things to see. He invited me to relax in his porch swing at sunset, warm up by his pellet stove and watch movies on his television! I felt truly welcome, and as a person traveling solo could not have stayed at a better place. Kurt enriched my experience of North Adams and I look forward to returning for another visit, and another stay at his home.
Kurt is an amazingly friendly host who shared great stories, opened his home, and offered to help in basically every way a friend would. (Restaurant recs, an offer to help drive me to the bus stop...I love him!) He used to run an art gallery, so the art in Kurt's home is fantastic. K's place is within a five minute walk of Main Street, so pretty central.
The beds are very comfortable (firm, not rock-hard or at all saggy). There was an electric outlet by each beds, and the wireless is reasonably fast. The towels are soft and lovely. The poodle is in fact as hypo-allergenic as claimed (I didn't sneeze once) and friendly without being barky.
You should go! Great host, pretty art, great price, nice room -- what else could you ask for?

About the Host, Kurt
I moved to North Adams from Boston, MA 11 years ago, drawn by the growing arts community, year-round culture, local historic architecture and natural beauty of the lakes, rivers and mountains. I am outgoing, enjoy the outdoors--whether hiking, swimming, biking or gardening, and I love doing restoration work on my house. I place close family relationships high on my priority list and have a group of really wonderful (and fascinating) friends who've become my "chosen" family.
I owned a contemporary art gallery in North Adams for 5 years and have been on numerous boards of directors for area arts organizations each of my 11 years in the Berkshires. In addition to having a background in arts management I have worked for a number of years as a project management consultant for technology organizations. I shop and eat locally whenever possible--I like to support my friends and neighbors in contributing to our community.
I have traveled extensively world-wide (Europe, Asia/Asia-Pacific, US) and some of my favorite experiences and memories are related to the people I've met along the way. I thrive on hearing about other people's life experiences and stories.
