About this listing
PLEASE NOTE: During the peak summer months I only rent rooms out a week in advance due to the fact that I often rent the entire house (unless you are only staying during weekdays, in which case I may be able to reserve those much further in advance). In addition to a separate listing for the entire house, I have this bedroom and a separate listing for a double twin room available in my beautiful Colonial Revival home.
Bedroom #1 (this listing) has a very comfortable double sized mattress and is furnished with a hand-painted cottage Victorian style bedroom set including dresser with drawers, and two comfortable, upholstered armchairs (I replaced the cane rocker in the photos with a second upholstered chair). It accommodates 1-2 people and can fit a single or double air mattress in the room as well (I currently have an extra double mattress that can be used).
I have a spacious and comfortable Colonial Revival home in the heart of North Adams' downtown historic district just a 5 minute walk to Main Street, a 15 minute walk to Mass MoCA, and literally next door to the MCLA campus. Currently there are three bedrooms available but the fourth bedroom will be completed by the end of August 2013. The house has 2 living rooms, a formal dining room, fully equipped kitchen and pantry, 1 1/2 bathrooms, a large wrap around porch, and a private backyard patio and garden. All bedrooms have plenty of comfortable, high quality bed linens, blankets, pillows, and towels.
Bedroom #2 has a queen sized bed, an antique desk, and a comfortable loveseat situated in the sunny bay window. (I'm currently refinishing the original trim on several of the windows in this room).
Bedroom #3 has two twin beds along with a wooden arm chair, a nightstand, and a small set of drawers for storage.
As of July 2013 there is one air conditioner upstairs (in this double room) and one downstairs which seem to do a fine job of keeping the house comfortably cool.
I am one block from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and a five minute walk from Main Street, the heart of downtown North Adams. You would be a 15 minute walk to Mass MoCA or a 15 minute drive to the Clark Art Institute and Williams College in Williamstown. There are over a dozen restaurants within walking distance as well as a Planet Fitness gym, grocery store, shops and galleries. Windsor Lake is a 15 minute walk or less than a 5 minute drive and the perfect place for an early morning or end of day swim.
You have full access to a modernized, well-equipped kitchen and pantry with enough pots, pans, utensils, and dishes to entertain. The house includes a formal dining room with the added warmth of a fireplace insert. If you enjoy the warmth and crackle of a fireplace feel free to throw a few logs on the fire.
There are two living rooms. Living room #1 has a pellet stove and flat screen tv with theater surround sound along with plenty of comfortable seating. Living room #2 has a sectional sofa and piano. Plug your laptop into the flat screen tv or turn on the Roku and kick your feet up to watch a movie, surf the web via my wireless connection, listen to music, or just read a book. For those of you unfamiliar with Roku, it streams many online channels (video, radio, etc...) to my tv via wifi. It is connected to Netflix, HuluPlus, AmazonPrime, and Pandora accounts among many others.
There is one full bathroom with a shower and two sinks on the second floor and a spacious, newly renovated powder room/half bath on the first floor. As of July 2013, the half bath is fully functional but still needs some finishing touches (trim painting).
The house is well-stocked with board games of all kinds, books, and three adult bicycles. Although there is no access to the washer and dryer there is a laundromat just 1 1/2 blocks away on Ashland Street.
Off-street parking is available for up to 4 cars and there is a large front porch with seating for 7+ for soaking in some sun or just catching a breath of fresh air. My home is a non-smoking environment, although smokers may use the yard and/or porch for smoking as long as the butts are disposed of properly.
The yard is very nicely landscaped with flowers and flowering trees that blossom from Spring through Fall, a gas grill on the back porch, and seating for 13+ people in the backyard garden patio and four more on the four-seater wooden lawn swing. If you're visiting family or friends and would like to host a meal or gathering at the house, I'm open to that for an additional fee.
You'll be sharing the house with me (a single, professional gay male in my 40s) and my very friendly and entertaining, hypo-allergenic dog (a cockapoo), Uli. We are both very easy going and respectful of other people's space and needs. I may have other guests staying in the single room (my other AirBnB listing) while you're here so if that's an issue please let me know. I've had multiple guests on a few occasions and everyone's gotten along superbly.
I'm listing my two rooms at very reasonable prices simply because I am currently wrapping up some remodeling projects which include an updated half bathroom, a complete exterior paint job (about 95% finished), an updated kitchen & pantry and a refinished entry staircase. The 1940s elevator should be back in action sometime in 2013.
I am a very social, outgoing person and consider myself to be fairly laid back and easy going. I'll be glad to help make sure your visit to the Berkshires is an enjoyable one and I'm happy to do my best at answering any questions you may have about the area. You're welcome to use the living rooms, dining room and kitchen as well as all outdoor spaces whenever you'd like. All I ask is that you clean up after yourself and respect my home while you enjoy it.
You're welcome to drink alcohol responsibly while staying in my home, and honestly, if you find yourself at a local bar after a few too many you can call me and I'll gladly arrange a taxi or pick you up myself. It's only a 10 minute walk to downtown North Adams so in the warmer months it's very easy to leave the car at home and stroll downtown anyway.
My home is a drug-free, non-smoking environment although you're welcome to smoke outside on the front porch or on the patio in the back yard. All I ask is that you dispose of any matches or butts in the trash.
Please be careful not to let the dog out and to lock up when you venture out during your stay. I'll either make sure I'm at home or will provide you with a key so you can come and go as you please.
Easy communication with the host (email, phone, text). Place is comfortable and neat. Host is generous with access to kitchen, and house amenities. Quiet street. Makes an excellent base for all the local attractions. Would recommend and hope to return in the future.
Kurt was the BEST host! He is super friendly, his house is beautiful and very well kept and his dog is adorable and sweet! I wish we could have spent more time enjoying his company and his house! Next time I am in the area, I will surely keep Kurt in mind! Thank you!!
What a gorgeous house! It's in a great location near downtown and Mass Moca. Bedroom looks like the pictures. Kurt was a wonderful, charming host with lots of great recommendations. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends. Mahalo, Kurt.
I made a fairly last minute decision to take a quick trip to North Adams primarily to visit the MASS MoCA. I decided to finally try AirBnB and stayed at Kurt's home.
I had a great time! Kurt was a wonderful host. I only had one day and one night to explore the town and Kurt gave me great recommendations for places to go and things to see. I'm positive that if I'd stayed at a hotel, my trip to North Adams would have been less enjoyable.
Kurt's lovely historic house is in a great location in North Adams. I had a wonderful stay and will definitely be back. Kurt was very kind and welcoming and made me feel at home during my three day stay. The bed is comfortable, and the place is very clean. I especially enjoyed the nice outdoor space, including the swinging bench. Highly recommended.
Our stay with Kurt was simply excellent. Highlights: his house is gorgeous and filled with interesting art and furniture; he knows all the best restaurants, hikes, museums, and other events happening in the area - we found some great stuff to buy thanks to him; the bed was very comfortable and everything was clean and tidy. Kurt was a very kind host and interesting and enjoyable to talk with. He also has an adorable white fluffy dog which we played with for quite some time. Highly recommend.
Kurt has a beautiful 19th-century home within easy walking distance of the town of North Adams, as well as MassMoCA, its famous contemporary art museum. He was an easy, congenial host, ready to provide directions and recommendations, but also in and out enough that we weren't always bumping into one another. His very friendly dog was a nice touch, as he came in and flopped on the floor with us for a while. That's a feature you won't get in a hotel!

About the Host, Kurt
I moved to North Adams from Boston, MA 11 years ago, drawn by the growing arts community, year-round culture, local historic architecture and natural beauty of the lakes, rivers and mountains. I am outgoing, enjoy the outdoors--whether hiking, swimming, biking or gardening, and I love doing restoration work on my house. I place close family relationships high on my priority list and have a group of really wonderful (and fascinating) friends who've become my "chosen" family.
I owned a contemporary art gallery in North Adams for 5 years and have been on numerous boards of directors for area arts organizations each of my 11 years in the Berkshires. In addition to having a background in arts management I have worked for a number of years as a project management consultant for technology organizations. I shop and eat locally whenever possible--I like to support my friends and neighbors in contributing to our community.
I have traveled extensively world-wide (Europe, Asia/Asia-Pacific, US) and some of my favorite experiences and memories are related to the people I've met along the way. I thrive on hearing about other people's life experiences and stories.
