The Blue Gate, Ardagh, Church Cross, West Cork, County Cork
Set in the magical landscape of West Cork in the town land of Church Cross, the Blue Gate Cottage nestles snugly into a mostly organic farming community.(Madeline McKeever of brown Envelope Seeds is a close neighbour) But yet the cottage also faces the sea and has stunning views towards Ringaroga Island, Baltimore Bay and Sherkin Island.
A scenic 1 mile(1.6km) walk through undulating landscape will take you to Turk Head pier known as a cusheen(little pier) where local fishermen access the rich fishing grounds around some of West Cork’s 100 islands. 1 mile in the other direction from the house will bring you to Minihan’s pub and like the cusheen, it’s a little pub which packs a mighty punch, where on certain nights you can while away a couple of hours listening to traditional music and singing. On a summers evening it’s a good recommendation to start here for pre dinner drinks-it has one of the best views from its beer garden of Kilcoe castle(belonging to the actor Jeremy Irons) then head to Cunnamore Pier for the 8 o clock ferry to Heir Island for John Desmond and Ellmarie Fenton’s Island Cottage restaurant. This unique restaurant is open mid- June to mid-September and highly advisable to book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
At the time of writing this, Island Cottage restaurant has just announced extended opening times for Saturday and Sunday late lunch in April, May and June. Another restaurant which will be open for the summer season is The Custom House run by Ian Parr and Sue Holland who are returning from France.
It is also highly recommended. West Cork has a wealth of artisan food producers, artists and crafts people all with easy reach of The Blue Gate Cottage.
At the end of an event packed day the cottage offers a comfortable retreat with every modern convenience to make for a truly enjoyable getaway.
Access to the whole house.
Interaction with Guests
We will greet the guests on arrival and show them all the facilities.
A lovely place in a fantastic area of West Cork.. David and Angie were wonderful hosts, leaving us local bread, cheese and chocolate on our arrival, and giving plenty of recommendations of places to check out nearby. We stayed with our 2 year-old daughter, and the place was perfect for her - cot provided, and she loved strolling out to see the nearby donkeys and cows every evening. Would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a family-friendly place in beautiful surroundings anywhere in the vicinity of Skibbereen/Schull/Baltimore.
Many thanks to David and Angie for letting us stay in their beautiful and clearly much-treasured house for a week of sunshine, exploring and relaxation. As a family of four with an extra guest, we relished the luxurious spaciousness of the house and the great views towards Baltimore. There's fascinating art everywhere and the house is most comfortably furnished. Especially people with teenagers will appreciate the separate bathrooms! Those of us sleeping in the upstairs bedrooms were treated to a magnificent starry sky visible from the beds. Angie told us that the area was a sunshine pocket, and indeed we were able to relax with a beer on the terrace outside the house almost every evening.
Communication with David and Angie was easy, prompt and friendly. It was great to meet them (even if we arrived half an hour early and created chaos) and be greeted with local products and some of David's yummy chocolate. They provided good information to local pubs, restaurants, shops and points of interest.
None of us wanted to leave - and we most certainly want to come back! Falling in love with West Cork is easy, but easier still if you're experiencing it from such a great house.
Angie and David's cottage in West Cork is as big as a palace. It was the perfect size for the extended family and all generations. The light, the scenery, the four bathrooms and the magnificent views made everyone happy. Angie and David told us everything about the area, from where to catch the best pub session music to where to recycle, as well as the best places to buy locally produced food. When not looking at the sea views it was a pleasure to behold the art on nearly every wall - and David makes great chocolate! Thanks.
Dear David and Angie
Thank you again for letting us stay at your wonderful house!
We absolutely loved the place: The huge window front with views of the bay, the maisonnette and the easy access to the terrace filled the space with light and fresh air. Even on rainy days (of which we had almost disappointingly few!), when we cuddle up inside reading, dreaming or drinking tea, we felt connected to the land and the outside. You have furnished the house with great taste and with lovely and quirky details, without being overly polished or posh. We particularly appreciated the art, Angie, that you have selected for display from your own and other regional artists’ body of work.
In the tranquility of the neighborhood we were able to relax while listening to the sounds of the cows, watching the birds and seals in the bay, or stalking the fox. Our 1.5 year old daughter Ella was thrilled to visit the neighbors’ chicken, feed the donkeys in the field next door and jump from the farmers’ hay stacks (hope he didn’t mind…!). We often took a short walk to Turks head or one of the other local piers.
After our three-week stay we started to feel like locals. You gave us some excellent advice on places to visit in the area. In particular we enjoyed the farmers’ market in Skibbereen and Bantry; and our excursion to Crookhaven, the recommended crabmeat sandwiches at the pub in the harbor for lunch and the nearby beaches. But also our trip to Lough Hayne, and the islands across the bay (Sherkin and Heir) we keep in fond memory. We loved that we were able to depart for the islands from the small local harbor only a 10 minute car ride from your house. A perfect location to explore West Cork and beyond!
Altogether: If we return to Ireland we would want to stay in your house again. To everyone looking for a tasteful, quiet, romantic and personal stay we can highly recommend booking David and Angie’s getaway.
Best wishes, Anna, Wolf and Ella
PS: Excellent chocolates! :-)
