Private home in extremely safe and friendly southwest Portland. Large private room with queen-sized bed, large desk, closet and dresser. The room is accessed through the main part of the house - the bathroom is shared.

Newly refinished hardwood floors as of June 2012 and newly painted exterior as of August 2012

The home sits next to a large forest with old-growth Douglas fir trees. We regularly hear coyotes and owls in the woods.

The covered deck has a barbeque grill. The host loves to cook and encourages guests to join in. You're welcome to use the kitchen on your own.

Wi-Fi. On-street parking. Full laundry facilities available for you to use.

The host is an avid outdoorsman (skiing, hiking, camping) and is happy to suggest great locations for exploring the beautiful environment around Portland. The host, and a housemate who lives in the daylight basement of the home, are happy to give you suggestions on places to visit and people to meet.

Nice yoga studio is a 10 min walk - OmBase Yoga

Community recreation center is 5 min drive with full workout facilities, yoga classes and large pool and very inexpensive. Southwest Community Center.

OHSU - Oregon Health Science University - our local medical school is a mile or two away. Lewis and Clark College and Portland State University are also within 2-3 miles. JCCA is close as is synagogue.

The host can also guide guests to a wide range of dance-related activities in town from salsa, tango, ecstatic, blues and contact improvisation. Nia, yoga and other movement practices are easily available too.

The neighborhood is a very quiet area of well-maintained modest homes. Within a 15 minute walk are restaurants and bars in the Hillsdale neighborhood.

We can also lend you bikes and some outdoor gear if needed.

There's a big TV but we only use it for watching DVD's - you can use it too.

Bus transportation to downtown is a 10 minute walk away.

Farmers market on Sundays within walking distance. Library too.

The most important part is that we offer a sweet and friendly refuge where you're considered part of the family. We have a warm, conscious and heart-centered home and circle of friends and we look forward to welcoming you into that group.

Hair dryer, clean sheets and towels provided.

Both host and housemate are professionals in the finance industry and work "normal" hours so house is quiet and empty during the day.

  • Spyder was a very nice host and was able to accommodate us on short notice which was very helpful. The house is in a beautiful and quiet area. Sadly were really only at the house long enough to plop our heads on our pillow, but we slept very soundly. If you are looking for a peaceful place to stay, I would highly recommend this place.

  • Warm, welcoming and cozy on all fronts. We arrived on a blustery cold Portland day and were made to feel right at home in their begardened woodsy home. Ken and Spyder were super helpful and caring of our needs. Sweet neighborhood, lots of walking possibilities and close to food coop and other stores and restaurants. Can't wait to see in the spring when the days are longer!

  • `Just like the ad says "Forested Retreat". My stay was relaxing and comfortable.

    December 2013
  • I had a lovely stay with Ken in Portland - in addition to being a welcoming and hospitable host, the home itself is lovely and clean and the guestroom bed was extremely comfortable! Ken and Spyder made it clear and easy for me to get into the house when I arrived, and I appreciated that the room was prepared with a housekey, clean towels, lots of guidebooks and maps, and the wi-fi password (what more do you need?). My stay was pretty short but I would definitely return, and certainly recommend staying here to others!

    November 2013
  • This was my second stay at Ken's home and retreat. All good and I can recommend staying at this location.

    November 2013
  • Before I get there Ken gave me many details about how to get through the door , and his partner, spider, they are so kind and friendly, like long time old friend. house is at good location
Wish meet Ken and Spider again.

    October 2013
  • Quiet, conveniently located and exactly as promised! We didn't get to spend much time with our hosts as we were out and about enjoying the city, but we had a great stay and would return again on a future visit to Portland.

    What a beautiful back patio!

    October 2013
  • Ken was really great to work with before and during my stay. He answered all questions and made helpful suggestions as I prepared for my first trip to Portland. Everyone in the home was welcoming upon my arrival. I was in a training program that kept me from spending much leisure time at their home, but it was a great place to rest. Very comfortable bed and room. Much gratitude, too, for the ride to OHSU one day and to Trimet stop at departure. Thanks much!

    September 2013
  • Ken and Spider are great hosts, nice and very helpful. I had a short, but nice stay at their home with some short, but interesting conversations. The room is large, clean and comfy.
By bus, it's a short drive to Portland Downtown, and it's a save area to walk home (from bus stop to the house) at nights, with flashlights and some melodies to sing while wandering :) and if you don't have flashlights, Spider does even lend you one!
    Thank you!

Ken: Banker, Spyder: Shiatsu practitioner, Transformational Coach
We are Ken and Spyder. Ken originally from Chicago and Spyder from Milwaukee, WI. Our housemate, John, of five years shares the lower half of my home and who is a good friend. Our home is something of a celebration center with lots of dinners, dance lessons, classes, parties and seminars held here. About Ken: I love Portland. Our quirky people, our food, the natural environment and the grace with which people easily evolve acquaintances into friendships. I've traveled widely and speak French, decent German, survival Spanish and the international language of cooking. If I had a month to go anywhere I'd probably choose Italy for its food and mellow character. I've lived in Cameroon West Africa while in the Peace Corps, worked and lived in St. Louis and went to graduate school in upstate New York at Cornell. My career is in the finance industry and I have a very mainstream background but socially and politically am usually on the liberal side of most social issues. My passion is the outdoors where I spend a lot of time hiking, camping and cross-country skiing. I am also passionate about creating and participating in community. Our home is regularly hosting an event of some sort and guests are always welcome to participate. Examples have included salsa dancing, champagne tasting, pizza making, movie nights, meditation circles, workshops and seminars. Since I'm not a musician or artist in any traditional sense, I contribute the art of being the host and see it as a sacred goal to bring people together in grace and comfort. I'm a regular at ecstatic dance in Portland where on any night of the week you can find a fun, free-form dance to attend. Am a fan of Burning Man too having attended a few times. Favorite places in Oregon include Breitenbush Hot Springs, Alvord Dessert, Wallowa Mountains, water falls, our coastline, Sunriver, the Columbia River Gorge and most places where big trees grow. About Spyder: I’ve been living in Portland now for 6 years, and love the fact that I can still enjoy winter snow sports on the mountain, then leave it all behind, come home and be a year round bike commuter! I love more than anything to be in nature and Oregon lends itself to that in extraordinary ways, from mountains to ocean to desert, rainforests, hot springs, and more. All aspects of health and wellness is my passion. I am a Shiatsu practitioner and transformational coach (feel free to ask me what that is!) Eating well has been a focus since early adulthood and enjoy cooking, gardening and going to the farmer’s market. I love to read but never seem to have enough time to do it…boredom is not in my vocabulary. I love being creative, to dance and play music. Ken and I met through the ecstatic dance here in Portland, and it is a beautiful, heartfelt community. I look forward to meeting you in our home. Sure, we do this to make a few extra bucks but more importantly, we do it for the chance to meet new people and to help them find the beauty of the Portland area that we love. Our style is very low-tech and hands-off. If you like to chill out on your own, please feel at home doing that. If you'd like to share a cup of coffee or a glass of wine - so much the better.
