Live the French life in this old town in Quercy on the Dordogne river. Our guests say they feel right at home in our quirky Tower House in the ancient quarter of Souillac. The house dates from 1833 but does have mod cons including dishwasher, washer/dryer and TV with English channels to complement the historic architecture. Unusually for France, all linen is supplied. To top it off, the house has high speed wifi throughout. Whip up gourmet meals with produce from the local market.

The space

Renovated with taste and care, the Tower house offers chic, if quirky, accommodation, a few steps from the 12th century abbey and just around the corner from the market square in the Souillac old town centre. Restaurants, bakery, shops and supermarket are all within easy walking distance.
Our spacious and luminous, recently renovated house on 4 levels will enchant you. Its unique architecture ensures light pours in to the house, when the shutters are open. A mix of antique and modern furnishings complement the ancient beams and wooden floors.
Unusually for French holiday rentals, all linen is included in the price, as is Wifi, electricity and gas. The house is centrally heated.
The fully fitted cook's kitchen includes gas cooktop, electric oven, Miele dishwasher, microwave and manual cappuccino machine.
2 full, spacious bathrooms provide modern amenities for guests. The first floor bathroom has a walk in shower as well as a full bath. The second floor bathroom has a bath with shower over and the washer/dryer.
The Tower House has 3 bedrooms (a queen, on the second floor and twin and single bedrooms on the first floor) as well as a large (42m2) attic with a day bed, suitable for a child.
For ease of reading, lamps are located by each bed and in the attic.
The house comfortably sleeps 5 but the attic can accommodate an extra 2 guests on the day bed and a single mattress on the floor.
The 55 cm thick walls, central heating and double glazed windows ensure year- round comfort. There is a fan for extra hot days.
Free parking is available nearby in the streets around the house.
Souillac has around 3000 residents and is located on the Dordogne river, 20 minutes from the Dordogne valley airport at Brive la Gaillarde. You can travel to the Tower House by train from Paris (just over 4 hours) for a car-free holiday. It is possible to explore the local area on foot, bicycle, train or bus.
The South West of France is famous for its gastronomy and prehistoric caves. The beautiful villages of Sarlat la Caneda, and Rocamadour are within 20 minutes. Cycling holidays are very popular along the banks of the river.
Our hostess is bilingual in English and French.

The entire house is available to our guests, including 2 separate living areas, a fully equipped kitchen, 2 massive bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, an office with wireless printer, washer and drier and a huge attic with BBC and other satellite TV channels.

I live in Australia so have a local manager (bilingual in French and English) and do not interact with guests when they are in the house.

We love our time in the town, within walking distance from shops and restaurants. We are a few steps from the 12th century abbey, the market place and a boulangerie. It is an enjoyable walk around the narrow streets and pedestrian areas to admire the old houses. The Dordogne river is a 15 to 20 minute stroll away.

Souillac is on a direct train line to Paris and Toulouse. The town itself is small enough to walk around or cycle if you don't have a car.
There is a bus to Sarlat or Martel several times a day. But for exploring further afield, renting a car is recommended. There is a good selection of rental cars at the Brive train station or a limited selection at the Total garage in Souillac.

The local area is justly famous for its gastronomy. The lycée hotelier (hotel school) takes students from a wide area around Souillac. The school restaurant, for which bookings are essential, is open in term times and offers great value meals for lunch and dinner.
There are a number of prehistoric caves in the local area. Our favourites are the less well known caves of font de gaume, pech-merle, the gouffre de padirac. Lascaux II is within an hour's drive.

Guest access

Guests have the entire 4 floors of the house for their own use.

Interaction with guests

We live in Australia most of the time but have a brilliant bilingual local manager who lives in a nearby village.

Other things to note

With large bathrooms on both the first and second floors, and 2 living areas, the Tower House works really well for 2 couples or families with older children.

As is noted in the description of the house, it is not expected to meet Janice but communication was very easy. Check-in and check-out was very easy also. Janice’s house is very comfortable and exactly as described on Airbnb. The kitchen was well equipped and the essentials provided made us feel as if we were in our own home. Parking was very easy and there are many tourist attractions within close driving distance. We would recommend staying here if you are visiting the Souillac/Dordogne area.

We are a retired couple from Colorado visiting the Dordogne area for one week. We enjoyed our wonderful stay at the tower house in the village of Souillac. She has done a professional job in remembering every detail to make a traveler feel at home. The kitchen is well supplied with all the equipment to prepare a gourmet meal if this is what you want to do. One could entertain with dining area living space on the main floor of 4 levels & open kitchen. Lots of space with bedrooms & bathrooms on each upper level. The bathrooms are spacious & well supplied Down to every detail, even the bath salts. The linens are first class. We especially enjoyed our beds with feather comforts & pillows. She has supplied the guest with a Pinter, telephone, games, books, music, & television. Plenty of proper lighting for reading. Also to start the stay everyone is supplied for coffee, tea, spices & staples. Laundry supplies with all the English directions & the places to eat & sight see. Parking is convenient & free. A great area to spend more then a week or more. Also an excellent Friday market. So many villages around this area such as Sarlat to explore. We would certainly recommend a stay in her wonderful well decorated tower house & it has been kept with its authentic wood beam ceilings & special stairs....we loved everything about this place....we were only wished we had more days to stay here.

Janice's house is character-filled and charming. It's location in the centre of town makes is so easy to experience village life. One morning I opened the door, wished the postman "Bonjour" and had an impromptu French lesson with the woman in the bakery around the corner. It's just around the corner from a 1000 yr old church but has all the modern conveniences to make your stay comfortable. Thanks, Jos & Scott

We had a lovely stay at the Tower House. It is beautifully decorated and very well equipped. Communication with Janice was excellent and we appreciated all the extra train travel and Souillac information she gave us. Arrival and departure arrangements were straightforward. A great place to stay with easy access to the sites of Perignord Noir and The Lot.

This was a fantastic experience based in Souillac at the Tower House. The abode had everything one could wish for; comfortable beds, a great location and extremely well provisioned. The instructions we found helpful, and as a result we enjoyed many lovely experiences. E.G. The recommended boulangerie and magnificent Chateau de la Treyne and the Friday local food market. For us five cousins it was the highlight of our trip and we would recommend the Tower House as a wonderful base from which to explore the surrounding environs of the spectacular Dordogne.

What a joy it was to stay in Janice's lovely Tower House in Souillac. We were a party of 5 - mum, dad, adult son, daughter-in-law and daughter. Our children's birthdays are only a day apart so this was to be a special birthday treat and it certainly was. The house is very spacious, although over 4 floors so if you can't manage creaky old wooden staircases this probably isn't the house for you. The living, dining kitchen are open plan on the ground floor and the kitchen is especially well set up. Our son is a chef and he had no trouble feeding us gourmet meals using the kitchen and local produce from the Friday market and the excellent butcher just around the corner. There is also a patisserie around the corner which we used most days. We found the one a 10 minute walk away towards the end of our stay and it is certainly worth the walk. All our communications with Janice and Kim were handled really quickly and the information provided is excellent. The new safe-key system is great. We were travelling all day the day we arrived so knowing we just had to use a combination to get in and not to have to worry about a deadline was very freeing. Souillac was a great base - the abbey is splendid and there's enough old town to make it interesting. It's a very convenient location to go to lots of places - the Saturday market at Salat La Caneda is a must - the market is huge and the town is very beautiful. There are also lots of wineries, restuarants, and beautiful natural scenery in the area. We'd love to come back!

We are unashamed francophiles who live in Australia and can't wait to retire and spend more time in France. After visiting many different French regions we chose the beautiful Dordogne valley for our second home. We want to share this beautiful, unspoilt part of France and its …
