Since you're reading this, I don't need to tell you about the magic of Sayulita, so...
Casa Petate is a beautiful place! I booked it for my brother and me to celebrate his birthday, but in truth it is big enough for two couples and their children. The location on the arroyo is ideal as it is a block away from the light and noise of downtown, and the beach is right down the street. There is a magic about the outdoor living and kitchen area that is hard to describe with the "star lights" creating a very nice nighttime effect. You start with incredible guacamole and salsa in the fridge upon arrival, which is really thoughtful. And the lady across the street who is the caretaker is attentive and very nice, though speaks no English. The hosts are also fantastic. Lauren was very responsive to two questions I had. I highly recommend this place.
PASS ON THIS ONE
Three of us stayed at Casa Petate, and in our opinions, it was not very nice. It was in a very noisy part of town, not just a neighborhood as portrayed but several businesses nearby as well. There is about a 4 hour window where we could sleep; the large delivery trucks started early in the morning with exhaust fumes coming in the windows. The bedroom windows are very close to the road. We didn't mind the regular noises of Sayulita- roosters, dogs, people partying, etc.- because you'll find that anywhere in town, but the dirt road in front was a constant parade of motorcycles, trucks and loud cars. And the exhaust level was naueating.
Also the bed was very hard and uncomfortable. The shower head had very poor water pressure; my husband took it apart and cleaned it, to no avail. The upstairs casita bathroom drain was plugged and the local caretaker did not take action when we let her know. The entryway and kitchen area smelled of cat urine.
If you pretty much can sleep anywhere and through anything, then this place might be okay for you. Also, if there are only 2 of you and you stay in the upstairs casita, that was newer and cleaner, and the bed was okay in there. (Still alot of smog and noise, though.)
Casa Petate is a wonderful little compound perfect for six people. Though it isn't especially fancy, it comes with a fully functional outdoor kitchen, which is a wonderful place to come together and cook and drink in the mornings and evenings.
Once of the best features is the family that lives across the street, and is always on call to help you with any trouble you might have. Whenever we needed a new water jug, or a recommendation on where to surf someone was always around to help. They also run a small food stand and can accommodate pretty much any special requests you might have, if given enough notice. Truly wonderful people.
Overall, highly recommended!
Sayulita and this house are both great. It was our family´s first time to Sayulita and we loved the small town feel and safety of Sayulita. Think surfer town with fruit stands, fish stands, street tacos, etc... Doesn´t feel nearly as touristy as Puerto Vallarta. The house is about a 200 meter walk from the main street Avenida Revoluccion and it is quiet at night. The house comes with a friendly orange cat named Liliana and the patio area and outdoor kitchen are fantastic. I also highly recommend the chicken stand across the street that sells full butterflied chickens with sides for 100 pesos (feeds 4).
Well-priced and charming spot in Sayulita. We were in town for a wedding, and saved a bunch of money by rooming here with 6 friends. It was a 10 minute walk to the beach and 5 to downtown, so pretty convenient.
We loved the guacamole and cervezas that were ready for us, and they were very accommodating with arrival and departure times.
The place was clean and we liked hanging out in the central courtyard. Good hot water for the showers and a giant jug of purified water were nice, too.
Lovely cute house, cool town, my family loved it, the lady next door very helpful, she allways checked on us if we need anything for sure we will comeback.

My good friend and I came to Sayulita for a wedding held at Villa Amor. We opted to save some money and stay at Casa Petate. When we arrived we were greeted by the lovely lady who lives across the street and she proceeded to make us fresh guacamole. When we entered the house it was everything we had hoped for and more. Tucked away on a little side street the house is beautiful. The town is so tiny it was quite easy to walk back and forth to the beach and villa amor. It was the absolute perfect home base for our trip. Everything we needed and nothing we didn't. It was also my first time using airbnb as a traveler after hosting for over three years now. Couldn't have been happier.
Thank you so much for hosting us at Casa Petate and we will most certainly recommend this place to all of our friends as well as possibly returning one day ourselves.
We had a very nice stay at casa petate. It is a short walk to the town square and the beach, and pretty much everything there is to do in sayulita. The caretaker of the property lives right across the street and is very sweet and helpful if you speak Spanish. We even asked her to come over to the house one evening to cook us a very nice meal with some Mahi Mahi we caught that morning. The food was great and she told us about the neighborhood and her life in sayulita. The house itself is nice and clean, and the shady outdoor living area was really nice to relax in after a long surf session.
Casa Petate is a great, central location for your Sayulita trip. It's located on a street that seems to house mostly locals and is across the street from the river so you don't have many neighbors. While the roosters crow at all hours of the night (though not every night), we had hardly any noise from people despite sleeping with our windows open and being in Sayulita during Semana Santa (the busiest week of the year).
The beds are comfortable and the rooms are spacious. The living area is all outside, which worked well for us since we were there during dry season, but may be an issue if you are there in a rainy month or are sensitive to dust (the dirt road kicks up a decent amount of dust into the house/patio).
The beer, chips, salsa, and guac that were at the house when we arrived were amazing! My parents stayed in a much fancier house in Sayulita and were really jealous of the food situation at Petate.
Casa Petate isn't the most luxurious place to stay in Sayulita, but it's in a great location, has all the essentials, and is a true bargain! Highly recommended!
