We really enjoyed Maurizio's apartment. The views from the bedrooms over the walls of Pienza were great, its location made it easy to enjoy to walk to anything in town, and parking for our motorcycles was free and just 2 minutes away, directly outside the walls. The apartment was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. And Maurizio was easy to work with regarding arrival and departure. The only problem we had was that the internet connection was with a USB stick, which we couldn't make work with either of our phones nor one of our two laptops.
The place looked exactly as described and the location couldn't have been better. The street is very beautiful and from there it is a just a short walk anywhere in the town.
We did find the place very hot. We were there at the beginning of July and it was a hotter than usual July we heard, but as there were no fans in the apartment we struggled with the heat.
The only other problem with the apartment was that the wifi wouldn't work for us. We all had Macs and that could have been a problem. (3 of us work in the computer industry and one is a teen - so it wasn't user error!) However, it wasn't really a big issue as it was more pleasant to get on the wifi at the Snoopy Bar a few minutes walk away. And most of the restaurants offered wifi too.
Maurizio came from Rome to let us in and as we arrived earlier than what we originally expected, he couldn't meet us then and he didn't manage to communicate with us via text on the day that he was still far out, so we sat in a hot car waiting for him when we should just have gone somewhere to get a drink. So just be sure to make careful plans about when you will get there. His English is good - but there is still a language and cultural barrier so just take that into account.
Maurizio gave us great suggestions on where to eat - at the one place we had the best pasta we have ever eaten. He is also very helpful on suggestions as to where to go.
Pienza is a beautiful town and the apartment is great if you just bear in mind it can get hot (it does have heaters for the winter)
Thanks for your comment, Meryl.
I'm glad you're enjoyed you holiday in Pienza.
I will take as soon as a fan. Unfortunately this year we had an unexpected warm, well above the seasonal average.
I'm sorry that you had problems with the internet key. Fortunately in Pienza there is internet everywhere, as you have discovered. I'm planning to put an internet terminal at home that guarantees segnael wi-fi throughout the apartment.
Finally, thanks for your patience for the inconvenience regarding the meeting time.
This authentically older style, rustic apartment is furnished and equipped much as it has been for probably many years. This in some ways adds to its charm, but we found the living areas rather dark and would have appreciated the addition of a toaster and kettle. There is however a modern tv and hair-dryer and we were able to machine wash and line dry laundry. The apartment is in a great location with absolutely lovely Tuscan rural views when at the bedroom windows.
Maurizio, we wish we had had more time to enjoy more of your Pienza recommendations. Buca de Enea was our delicious first dinner (generous, divine cheese plate and pasta with mushrooms that we still dream of!) and we ended our visit with a glass of (email hidden) with a wall-side view of the countryside. We did enjoy some of your recommendations for day trips nearby. The apartment had everything we needed, including a much appreciated clothes washer, hot shower, and well equipped kitchen! Thank you for your personal welcome.
Maurizio was warm and accommodating. He was flexible with our arrival time when we got a late start driving out of Florence (we had a heck of a time wrestling our reserved car out of the clutches of Hertz). When we arrived he showed us around the house and even had some really helpful materials prepared to orient us to Pienza and the surrounding towns, as well as some excellent recommendations for where to eat.
This was my second time driving around the hill towns of Tuscany and I think Pienza is the ideal home base. It is a small enough town that you feel you have really gotten to know it well after staying there three nights. But it is big enough that there are a number of restaurant options to enjoy, so if we ate dinner there every night we'd never tire of the food options. That is helpful because driving the narrow, winding roads of tuscany in the dark is an intimidating prospect, so we liked to be dark or nearly back by dark. Plus the high wall of pienza has the most spectacular sunsets I've ever seen.
The apartment itself is large, with stunning views of the Val d'Orcia out the windows. For those who have a preference, know that the beds are pretty firm. It was in the upper 70s F when we were there, but even without A/C it was pleasantly cool in the old stone building.
If you stay here, know that the google maps of Pienza mislabel the location of the street that this apartment is on, so we had some difficulty finding it. You have to go through the old archway entrance to the historic center of town and take the first right.
Casa graziosa in posizione centrale. Pienza bellissima come tutte le zone limitrofe. Maurizio e' gentile e disponibile. Torneremo sicuramente!
Maurizi's apartment was a perfect and peaceful place to end each day of exploring the Tuscan region. A simple and comfortable place that holds the flavor of living as the locals do in a room top floor apartment with views out over the rooftops. The small hilltop village of Pienza is intimate and scenic with many places to experience various versions of the incredible cuisine and wines of Italy. I also enjoyed many beautiful and scenic walks along the trails exploring the countryside. I also made an effort to watch the sunset along the western wall of the village along with locals chatting with their neighbors. I will forever keep Pienza in my heart. Thank you Maurizio for such kind service. When I accidentally left behind my camera lens and had to return after checking out a couple hours later, Mauriziao contacted the neighbors to let me back into the building so I could retrieve my lens. Guess I was wanting to never leave!
