Our vintage Airstream trailer, just 2 miles east of Cayucos & world-renowned Highway 1, is surrounded by 8000 acres of rolling hills. The updated 30' trailer has a kitchen, bathroom, outdoor shower & attached private deck with an amazing ocean view.
Whether you want to get out of the city for a weekend or spend some weeks immersing yourself in a dream life...
If you’ve ever driven the 1 from San Francisco to Los Angeles, you’ve driven through Cayucos, though you might not have noticed.
We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, where the wide beaches of Southern California give way to the rocky beaches of Northern California and commutes include seeing dolphins and migrating whales. We’re just 4 hours from either SF or LA, a stone’s throw from Montaña de Oro, and only an hour south of Big Sur.
Our ecological ranch, focused on self-sufficiency and sustainability, is situated right off the 1 on top of a hill immediately overlooking Whale Rock Reservoir and, only 2 miles to the west, the Pacific Ocean.
The Airstream is comfortable for two people and shares property with the main house that we live in. We keep chickens for eggs, a raised vegetable garden for food, and a drought-resistant native succulent garden, landscaped with recycled materials, for pleasure. There are two cats on the property, but not allowed in the trailer. Birds, rabbits, deer and the occasional bobcat come and go as they please on the 25 acres. We compost, take short showers, and turn off the water when we brush our teeth, and we hope you will, too. Welcome!
Guests have access to bath and kitchen amenities from towels to tea. There is also an outdoor grill and umbrella. There is wifi. Plus, beach-going items. Feel free to mine us for local knowledge -- where to surf, hike, and eat!
Interaction with Guests
We're into surfing, hiking, cooking, and doing it ourselves. We love having friends over for dinner as much as we love a quiet evening watching the stars come out. Your space is your space, but as on these country roads, we always greet each other in passing.
World-class surfing, good food, and a thriving local art scene make San Luis Obispo county an up-and-coming hub.
In true country fashion, we have strong relationships with our neighbors, even if we don't see each other that often. We go into town for the necessities regularly.
On your visit, you should definitely spend time in the nature, whether on the immediately wide sandy beaches of Cayucos or a little father afield in Montaña de Oro or Big Sur (Bixby Bridge, Ventana Wilderness, Julia Pfieffer Burns State Park). There's always a new hill to climb or vista to see!
Buses come through Cayucos, "the last California beach town," three times daily, but our ranch is still two miles away. If you do arrive by public transit, we could arrange a pick-up in town.
The drive from San Luis Obispo is easy and parking on the ranch is free. From SLO Airport, it's an easy 30 minute drive north.

Stupidity cures itself. We ask that you respect our less-than-conventional lifestyle and are mindful with water usage due to the drought. Due to fire hazards, we cannot have smoking or fire pits on the property. Please leave your pets at home.
April and Ryk were amazing hosts! The airstream is super cute and has been decorated in kitschy vintage things! The area is beautiful and it was so quiet and relaxing while we were there! April was wonderful with giving us info on the area and recommendations for things. Also we got to eat eggs from their chickens for breakfast and dinner that were so delicious! My wife and I had an amazing time! We will be coming back!
We loved this location, airstream and hosts. So amazing and really made our trip.
Really wonderful spot for discovering the less commercial side of California.
Wonderful experience, April thought of everything and it was really worth staying more than one night.
Little Gem is simply amazing; April and Ryk went out of their way to make us feel at home, with advice and homemade treats in the fridge. The Airstream itself cannot be beaten; fantastic views, well-equipped, with a quirky and endearing style - what's not to like? We settled into a BBQ on the deck overlooking the reservoir, valleys and cacti, armed with locally purchased sausages from the nearby Market. The outdoor shower the following morning was great fun and shouldn't be avoided even in poor weather!
Staying at Little Gem is absolutely amazing. My wife and I stayed for just one night but wish it could have been longer. To say that April thought of everything is an understatement, from games to fresh eggs and microwave popcorn, we had everything we needed and more. The place is immaculate, tastefully decorated and the views are to die for. I only hope we get the chance to stay here again.
My girlfriend and I have stayed in beautiful places all over the world and nothing quite compares to this amazing little spot. The airstream is not only set in the most unbelievable location you could ever imagine, it is the cutest, most amazingly decorated, cosy, and functional litte room all together. The shower was such a fun experience as you shower outisde with a view to die for and the sun (early in the day) shinning directly onto you. When night falls so many stars are out as there are no city lights. Outside the airstream is one of the coolest and most relaxing sofa's, a vintage rocking sofa, which is perfect to sit on and look up at the stars with a litte rocking. We only spent one night there and wish we could have stayed longer. We hope to one day return to this beautiful litte Gem. Thanks to April and Ryk for everything, we didnt speak much but you two both seem lovely. Hopefully we meet (website hidden) & Chantelle.
LOVED this cozy, adorable place! Views were breathtaking and we had anything we could have needed at our fingertips! April's attention to detail is fantastic. It was clean, relaxing and even came with some fresh eggs for morning breakfast! Definitely recommend!
Heaven :) We only stayed one night but wished we were able to stay longer. Directions were clear and easy to follow. Airstream was in amazing condition. We really enjoyed the novelty of it and ate our breakfast with the most splendid of views. April was a brilliant host with everything you needed provided and some extras! The fresh eggs for breakfast were delicious.
My husband and I wouldn't know what to do with ourselves if we didn't have our projects. We live the project life. Let us share one of them (our Sovereign) with you. Who knows what we'll be up to upon your arrival!
