About This Listing
I have a lovely double room and a twin room to share in an old farmhouse (some parts of the house date from the seventeenth century), set on the foothills of the Lake District in north England, with splendid views and immediate walking access to the fells. Enjoy real peace and quiet, tasty breakfasts and the homely company of cats and hens. You'll be far from the madding crowds, but you'll still have access to the modern world via wifi too!
It's most useful to come by car as there is no public transport in the vicinity, but I can happily pick you up from the nearest railway station, Foxfield - for a small fee - if necessary. Free supper to any guest who walks the distance!
I can accommodate from one to four guests, travelling together and happy to share, as there is just one bathroom (and you'll also be sharing with me). At popular times of the year I might (rarely) offer my second room to other guests, but with discretion, and after consultation with you. My fee is £35 per person per night (though micro persons (under 12 years) can stay for half price).
The Blacksmith Arms - an award-winning pub - is a lovely 25-minute walk down the hill (though depending how much you enjoy their wonderful real ale and yummy grub, it could take you a lot longer to get back up!) The closest village is 3 miles away and offers other pubs and cafes, post office, a tourist information centre, a pleasant village square and a village shop that sells some locally-sourced food.
The Lake District can be a wet and muddy place sometimes, so don't forget to pack some sturdy, waterproof walking boots or wellies, and a waterproof jacket. The track to my place is bumpy, narrow and steep in places but I think you'll find it worth the adventure!
If you fancy a sojourn in surroundings that inspired the great romantic poets, then do please come!
I hope that guests will make my home their's for the duration of their stay, enjoying the use of communal spaces - the kitchen, the fireside and sitting-room, and the garden and spaces beyond - as well as the privacy of their own rooms.
Interaction with Guests
The house is my home and I will be here and coming and going during your stay. I respect my guests' needs for privacy, and will give you as much space as I can. I would love to chat at some point, and get to know you a little, and to offer advice for your days spent here, but will leave you to enjoy yourselves in your own way.
I live in a beautiful, quiet part of the Lake District, with views to the Irish Sea and the hills on my doorstep. The house is part of a hill farm which I share with a farming family - I live in the house, they use the barns and fields but live away on another farm.
My home is on a remote farm and there is no public transport in the area. A car is essential if you want to go exploring the Lake District but if you come by train and I collect you from the station there are pleasant walks in the local area, and the nearest village is a 40 minute walk away.
Well this was our very first Airbnb booking and what a gem it turned out to be. It's a little tricky to find, but our wonderful host Kate provided detailed instructions and although we did pull up nearby and ask, we were heading in the right direction anyway, up the valley on a a very narrow track to Hawes. The location is spectacular and the views described do it justice as they are breathtaking, especially after our previous night in Birmingham.
Kate made my wife and I very welcome and from the moment we entered her quaint cottage, we were made to feel very much at home and she kindly stayed away whenever she felt we needed privacy. This really made us relax and feel as if we reserved the entire cottage.
The breakfast provided something for everyone with a huge choice of cereals, hams and pastries. A fry up is there if needed and I took full advantage as we had some long walks planned.
I highly recommend this stay and we could well be back with the kids next spring as there is ample room for a small family. Thanks to Kate the highlight of our tour of Blighty, an unforgettable experience.
Kate gave us a warm welcome and had her lovely heritage home ready for us when we arrived. Our room and bathroom were large and comfortable. The breakfasts were self catering or catered if we preferred. The weather was hot and sunny one of the days and we enjoyed some hiking and sitting in the garden. Definitely put this rural retreat place on your list as a must stay!
Kate is a lovely person. Her cottage is amazing and we all loved it. Her driveway is not for low slung sports cars as she says! But where she lives is simply gorgeous.
This was the most breathtaking scenery my family and I have ever seen!
Kate was really great and she lives in a wonderful area with lovely people.
Thanks for the memories. We had a fantastic time.
Kate is a lovely kind friendly and interesting person. Her home is in a beautiful location with walks from the doorstep. Many other walks in the beautiful Dudden Valley a short drive away where you will hardly see anyone else. A plentiful, delicious breakfast is provided to suit all tastes, we were left to help ourselves, which suited us just fine. Kate did offer to cook breakfast if we wished. We had the use of the fridge and were also able to cook in the evening. If you are looking to stay with a most thoughtful, delightful host in this area, then look no further you will not be disappointed. We had a meal at The Blacksmiths Arms which was very good.
I had the loveliest time at Kate's! Her home was beautifully done up and was very comfortable. The view from the room was amazing. Kate made me feel right at home! I very much enjoyed my conversations with her and she was very helpful. She would also drop me a text just to check that I was okay when I was out late. She was always warm and friendly. I would love to stay at Kate's again if I have the chance. (:

About the Host, Kate
I've lived in the Lake District for 25 years, thirteen of those in this wonderful old house. I work from home for book publishers, and take photographs in the between times. I'm fortunate to live in a place where simply walking out the door can be a sensuous adventure every time. I have watched my wonderful family grow up here and move on, and so there is space in my house for you, my guests.
