The Space

This beautifully furnished and private one bedroom flat comes equipped with a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, dining room, and living room. Other amenities include TV, cable, DVD player, wireless internet, cozy bed with new linens, and hardwood floors. This is an older home that has been beautifully remodeled. The kitchen is equipped with a full size refrigerator, micro wave, gas range, glass cabinets, coffee maker, and other appliances.

The flat easily accommodates 3, with a queen bed in the bedroom and a sofa sleeper in the living room. For extra guests there's a queen size inflatable aerobed with linens also. Note that there isn't a door on the bedroom so privacy could be limited.

The location of the home is in the centrally located neighborhood of Brooklyn in SE Portland, only a few miles from downtown Portland. Within blocks you'll find excellent dining, 24 hr fitness, one of the best concert venues in Portland (Aladin Theatre), movie theatre, coffee shops, shopping, and everything you could possibly need. Here is a list of what is available within walking distance: Papa Haydn's, Yukon Tavern, Iron Horse Restaurant, Dairy Queen, QFC, art stores, antique shops, wine bars, ice cream, Starbucks, Marsee Baking, Cha Cha Cha, Yoga, Salons, Dry cleaners, the best sushi in Portland, and Oaks Bottom Brewery.

Brooklyn is located adjacent to Sellwood which is one of the premier neighborhoods in Portland, and the Brooklyn Flat is a lovely home that you'll thoroughly enjoy. Voted the best family neighborhood by Portland Monthly Magazine, Sellwood has it all. Eastmoreland Park is with easy walking distance, as well as the Springwater Cooridor, Sellwood Park, Oaks Park, and Oaks Bottom.

For laundry needs there is a laundromat just down the street about 3 blocks.

Pets are welcome! There is an additional fee of $5/day. Just consider the pet as one additional person and the fee will be automatically added.

I'll gladly point you in the direction of all the wonderful activities this neighborhood has to offer. But if you'd rather discover the neighborhood on your own, that's fine too. There is a lockbox with key to get into the unit, and once you're settled in, if you have questions about what is around the neighborhood to do or see, just let me know.

Finally, public transportation is readily available, with local bus service within one block that will take you anywhere you need to go, including downtown Portland within about a 10 minute bus ride.

  • This is the third time we've stayed at John's place in Brooklyn and we consider it a home-away-from-home. Brooklyn Flat is the first place I always search for on airbnb when we're planning a trip to Portland. Everything we need is close enough to either walk or drive to in minutes, and the house is in a good location to reach all of the shopping and restaurants that we like to go to. John always responds really quickly to any questions or concerns that may come up during our stays.

  • We stayed at this Brooklyn Flat for two nights in April and were pleased with the quick responses from John to our questions, and the bottle of wine was a nice touch. The house is old, but clean, and the queen bed was comfortable. Furniture nice. We had trouble with noise from upstairs (at 3-4 am, a few guys were talking loudly, scraping chairs, walking around) and with blowing the electrical circuit because we plugged in two space heaters; John was kind enough to credit us for $50. The location is convenient--only a few minutes from downtown--and parking is easy right in front. If you like older-house charm, this place will suit you fine; hopefully John can figure out the noise issue.

  • This was my first experience with airbnb, and I can confidently say that John was an excellent host. The Flat was exactly as advertised and in great condition. Additionally, John was very helpful in answering all of my many questions and extra accommodating to any and all of my requests.

    Overall great experience!

  • We had an overall good stay in John's flat. The main perk for us was having a full-functioning kitchen. John was a great host who helped us through a beginning rough-patch of our stay. The faucet to the bathtub broke on our first day, and John came to investigate the problem within a half hour. He also had a plumber come to fix the faucet that day. We were glad to have such an attentive host. We would have had to find a new place to stay if this issue wasn't resolved so quickly.

  • We loved our stay at John's Brooklyn flat as it was in a decent location, it was roomy and had lots of touches of home including lovely decor. He even included lots of extra towels, coffee in the kitchen, and a great little stereo to hook your iPod or iPhone up to! Our only complaints were that noise from the neighbors upstairs and coming down the stairs carried through the walls. Our first night they were leaving for the airport at 4 in the morning and by the time they had loaded the car and left we were kept up for at least an hour. We also found the footed tub/shower a bit awkward to use and it ran out of hot water fairly quickly. But John was an excellent host, was very flexible with our dates, and all around great guy to rent from. We'd go back and highly recommend him! Thanks, John!

  • This clean and friendly flat is in a really convenient location. Everything from good beer and good food to walking trails and grocers was nearby. As for the house, the space is open and inviting but still cozy with plenty of seating. It was nice to have a place to call home for our 3-night stay and to have the added convenience of a full kitchen. The arched doorways and wood floors added charm and character just not found in a hotel room. Having a bottle of wine waiting was also a nice touch! Do keep in mind that this is the main floor of a 2-story rental. The floors creak and sound carries down from the renters above. This wasn't a big deal, but being awakened at 5:15 one morning and 6:15 another by people walking around upstairs was a bit of an early wake up call. I still consider this a 5-star rental because noise happens!

As for the owner/operator, he made the process a breeze. He was quick to respond to emails and messages and a pleasure to work with. Check in/check out was an easy process. I highly recommend renting from John since he was always very professional and courteous!

  • John is a wonderful host. He responded quickly to any requests we had and was always upbeat, positive and grateful that we let him know that there was anything we needed.

The home is comfortable and well equipped. The bed is comfortable. The home has a user friendly floor plan. It is conveniently located to everything. Brooklyn is a great neighborhood and we could walk to coffee shops, restaurants and live entertainment at the Aladdin.

I look forward to staying at John's next time I am in Portland.

  • We stayed here for a week in September/October. This is a comfortable, clean and spacious apartment that is in easy reach of city centre.

We enjoyed our stay here, but were disappointed that there were no laundry facilities, there is a laundry close by. The bath is also more of a shower bath, so if you want a nice soak after a long walk in the lovely Oregon countryside, you will be disappointed.

As the floors are solid wooden floors, you may experience foot noise from the apartment above.

I always believe in writing honest reviews. We enjoyed our stay and would consider staying here again, should we return to Portland.

  • John's flat was exactly what my girlfriend and I were looking for during our visit to Portland. The house looked exactly like the photos and I was thrilled to find many good restaurants (especially breakfast) within walking distance. We really appreciated the coffee beans and grinder that were provided, but unfortunately did not find the free bottle of wine that had been mentioned. Not a big deal. Our overall experience was enjoyable and we'd highly recommend the flat to others.

  • John's Brooklyn Flat was delightful. It was very comfortable, and nestled in a pleasant neighborhood. John was easy to be in touch with - prompt and friendly. I appreciated his willingness to allow a slightly earlier check-in time too.

I'm a very active person and I enjoy all the great activities Portland has to offer, including skiing, snowboarding, surfing, biking, running, you name it. I would love to make recommendations about what to do during your stay here. There are many things very close by. You won't be disappointed with the accommodations or the activities that are available to you. I've traveled to France, Germany, and Japan, and truly appreciate the diverse cultures around the world.
