We stayed at Jeff's house for 5 nights, even though we just planned for 4. The house was built by Jeff himself, and it was BEAUTIFUL - both the house and the property! Buy even more beautiful was the couple running it - Jeff and Pamela. They are both English speaking, they were always helpful, happy, kind, welcoming, warm and positive. They would help us find what we need and what to see and do, and made us feel like we were friends visiting! You'll get complete privacy, at the same time that you'd feel safe, since they are just a few meters away in their own house (also built by Jeff). They would show us around the garden of trees, flowers, palms and herbs, that they planted themselves! Jeff even showed me the ginger and turmeric plants, dug open a root and generously gave us a big handful of fresh and organic turmeric to make some delicious dinner with. They had made their own homemade soaps and shampoos for us, gave us fresh coffee and organic chocolate to welcome us, and with Pamela as a healer and yoga teacher, the stay was absolutely perfect.

Jeff is a wonderful host. The place is really beautifull and near to everything you might need in Puerto Viejo.

Pool is way bigger than it looks. A giant avocado float and a medium size donut fit and still had room for a party ;). Very convenient, close to everything (and providing bikes is more than you could possibly ask), place is eco-friendly and pretty. Jeff is a great host and he'll make sure you are alright. I wouldn't hesitate on staying there again. Oh, and we saw a sloth!

Jeff was both friendly & helpful. Home is in a beautiful secluded area. The entire house has mesh windows which allowed us to hear everything (a bit frightening at night). Perfect way to indulge in wild life.

I've never been in such an incredible place. Stayed in this "Villa" was one of the best experience in my life. The pool, the amazing house and all that surrounded it, are completely awesome. Jeff was the best host ever. He is really nice and he helped us a lot. Using the bikes was also a great experience. I really hope to come back to Puerto Viejo soon, and to this insane house, of course!

Pictures can be deceiving and so can descriptions; sorry to say that this is the case with Casa de Barro. Here are the biggest problems: 1. Toilets backed up (we were not informed that you can't flush any TP). 2. ROACHES...and yes, we know that we were in the jungle, but I'm pretty sure the pile of garbage a few feet from the door had something to do with the problem. The garbage area was full when we came and was still there when we left. 3. All the furniture, including the bed, was extremely uncomfortable. It all looked lovely, but clearly wasn't built for actually using. When the cheap plastic outdoor chairs are the most comfortable thing to sit in, it's a very sad situation. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and we enjoyed our visit to Puerto Viejo, but we would not recommend staying here!

Response from Jeff:
Thank you Holly for your honesty in pointing out your concerns during your stay. Not sure why you didn't notify my in person during your stay, as daily I came to check on how you are doing and if you needed anything. You were smiling the whole stay as you were enjoying your time here as you told me. As all our other guests that have stayed with us. This being said- For the first time, we did have an issue with the downstairs toilet. I apologized for this, but the upstair one did not have any issues and you were able to use it the whole time. .The problem of the downstairs toilet was corrected within a few hours and discounted you money off your stay for the incovenience. I was not aware of any garbage left out, but this may have drew insects as you mentioned. The problem has since been corrected. As far as the furnature, the bed mattresses are new and haven't had any other complaints, just compliments. The indoor furniture is the same as when we opened in 2014. New cushions have been replaced with 5" cushions about 2 months ago. It has suited our other guests just fine. I do agree, we do need to upgrade the outdoor furniture. The jungle does take a toll on outdoor furnature. We are in the process of replacing the existing furniture and just put the plastic chairs out until we get the new ones in. They should be ready this week. I am always looking to improve our guests stay. Thank you for your concerns and I apologize for your experience. It is a great shock to see you so happy, then to read your review that you were not happy. I am very sorry for this. Sincerely, Jeff-Casa de Barro

Jeff is very kind and welcoming. He was also very helpful in suggesting activities and places to eat. He has built up a lovely and cosy place to stay surrounded by beautiful greenery and a few minutes walk away from the nearest beach. Its about a 10-15 minute walk to the town.
