Eco-Friendly Custom Villa-
The owner took great architectural consideration in using as much native natural materials as possible and still defining the comforts of the clients standards.
The foundation was constructed of gavel and the base walls of dirt. The dirt was excavated from the properties private swimming pool and filled in the earth bags. After filling the bags with gravel and dirt they are then laid one on top of the other to form the walls. The walls are then stuccoed to protect the bags from the elements and finished for a stylish unique earthen/ Adobe look. The earth bags materials are of recycled polypropylene bulk bags.
(Please see the pictures of the front of the house defining the detail of the adobe structure and look).

All the lighting fixtures and accessories were hand-made from natural materials such as wood and coconut shells, thus eliminating the use of synthetic products.

Pictures can be deceiving and so can descriptions; sorry to say that this is the case with Casa de Barro. Here are the biggest problems: 1. Toilets backed up (we were not informed that you can't flush any TP). 2. ROACHES...and yes, we know that we were in the jungle, but I'm pretty sure the pile of garbage a few feet from the door had something to do with the problem. The garbage area was full when we came and was still there when we left. 3. All the furniture, including the bed, was extremely uncomfortable. It all looked lovely, but clearly wasn't built for actually using. When the cheap plastic outdoor chairs are the most comfortable thing to sit in, it's a very sad situation. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and we enjoyed our visit to Puerto Viejo, but we would not recommend staying here!

Response from Jeff:
Thank you Holly for your honesty in pointing out your concerns during your stay. Not sure why you didn't notify my in person during your stay, as daily I came to check on how you are doing and if you needed anything. You were smiling the whole stay as you were enjoying your time here as you told me. As all our other guests that have stayed with us. This being said- For the first time, we did have an issue with the downstairs toilet. I apologized for this, but the upstair one did not have any issues and you were able to use it the whole time. .The problem of the downstairs toilet was corrected within a few hours and discounted you money off your stay for the incovenience. I was not aware of any garbage left out, but this may have drew insects as you mentioned. The problem has since been corrected. As far as the furnature, the bed mattresses are new and haven't had any other complaints, just compliments. The indoor furniture is the same as when we opened in 2014. New cushions have been replaced with 5" cushions about 2 months ago. It has suited our other guests just fine. I do agree, we do need to upgrade the outdoor furniture. The jungle does take a toll on outdoor furnature. We are in the process of replacing the existing furniture and just put the plastic chairs out until we get the new ones in. They should be ready this week. I am always looking to improve our guests stay. Thank you for your concerns and I apologize for your experience. It is a great shock to see you so happy, then to read your review that you were not happy. I am very sorry for this. Sincerely, Jeff-Casa de Barro

Jeff is very kind and welcoming. He was also very helpful in suggesting activities and places to eat. He has built up a lovely and cosy place to stay surrounded by beautiful greenery and a few minutes walk away from the nearest beach. Its about a 10-15 minute walk to the town.

We absolutely loved the structure and the landscaping made us feel like we were in a tropical paradise. It was a plus hearing the howler monkies in the morning. It was a great experience and Jeff was very helpful and accomadating.

We had a fantastic time here. The house is located close enough to town to walk or ride bikes. We did both. The town and beaches are very cool and unique. The house itself is clean, a good size for a couple and surrounded by lots of tropical plants and trees. At night you can hear all the local animals which was fun. Good times!

Jeff was an incredible host with a spectacular home. I booked Jeff's home a month or more in advance. During the planning of our trip, he was very helpful with suggestions for actives, transportation, food & all other questions we had. We arrived quite late as the journey from San Jose airport to Puerto Viejo is about 5-6 hours. We took a $300 taxi. In the future I'd either fly in a small plane to Limon for about $60 from San Jose or shuttle $50. The bus is $20. Anyhow, Jeff greeted us at about 10/11pm. The directions are pretty tricky at night when you don't have a clue where your going. But Jeff spoke to our taxi & guided us in easily. The house was immaculate upon arrival. He stayed as long as we wanted him to, to show us around & how things worked. He made sure we were comfortable before he left. (You are deep in the jungle). There is no TV & the Internet is not great. But that's part of being in the jungle. We enjoyed the sounds of all the different animals every night. You could hear monkeys, birds, frogs & who knows what else. Jeff had supplied us with local coffee & chocolates. (Which was delicious, make sure to buy plenty to take home.) Jeff is building two more houses on the property, so getting a hold of him was usually pretty easy. We enjoyed Jeff's company so much that we invited him in for a yummy vegan dinner with us one night. We would even bring him drinks while he was working. Such a gentle & kind soul. A true pleasure to be around. The house is completely screened in, so you don't have to worry about bugs eating you in your sleep. We ate a ton of B12 to repel the bugs as well. The pool is such a nice bonus. We would dip in it several times a day while leaving or coming back from an adventure. Having the two bicycles to use was also very helpful & a must to have while in PV. We used them everyday. Things you should definitely do while in PV are: Horse back riding (Caribbean horses) Jaguar preserve Jungle Spa Beach...all of them. I would recommend bringing your own alcohol if you plan on drinking. The alcohol is pretty expensive out. & not many good choices for wine. However, beer is very inexpensive. Furthermore, this was an excellent experience. I would highly recommend anyone to stay here. You will not find a better private home/pool in PV. We will definitely be coming back! Thank you Jeff for making our jungle retreat better then we could have imagined!

We had a wonderful time at Casa Barro. Jeff and his friends made us feel very welcome from the time we arrived. The villa was beautiful and the gardens provided the property including the pool with complete privacy. The description of the house was spot on and the location was excellent, being just far enough from town to provide a quiet privacy, but still a short walk or bike ride away.

My husband and I loved staying here! The house is incredibly well designed and comfortable, eco friendly, surrounded by nature and very private. Plus we loved the pool. Jeff was a perfect host, very responsive to all our questions before and during the trip and very kind in person. We couldn't have asked for a better experience!
