Interaction with Guests
We provide as much advice as possible but live 3 hours away. Our neighbour can usually solve any problems.
Clew Bay is one of the most beautiful on the west coast of Ireland. The house looks out over several islands to Clare Island and Croagh Patrick mountain. The location is in a farming and fishing community, who are present all year round. The house is about 200 yards from the shore from where tide goes out for nearly 2 miles, leaving wonderful sandy walks, and great foraging opportunities. In summer the wildflowers are abundant and some are rare; in winter the shore is a destination for many migratory birds including a large flock of Brent Geese.
The area is extensive and a car is essential, but it is also ideal for cycling. Knock airport is about an hour away, Dublin about 4 hours.
Other Things to Note
There is so much of interest and to do and see that a week or fortnight can be spent doing something different each day - the Atlantic Drive on Achill Island is one of the truly dramatic coastal drives. NB. MINIMUM LET IS 7 NIGHTS USUALLY CHANGING OVER ON SATURDAYS. A WEEKLY RATE €1100 APPLIES IN JULY & AUGUST ALSO AT EASTER WEEK, CHRISTMAS, HALLOW'EEN & NEW YEAR
Sandhill is our family holiday home and is much used by us and it is very personally furnished with oil paintings etc. We want our guests to enjoy it as much as we do. There are plenty of stores which guests are welcome to use, but we do ask that they are replaced if used, so that life is simple for the next inhabitants. Pets are welcome by arrangement but we do prefer no smoking in the house itself.
Thank you Johnny for our wonderful stay in Mayo and for all the really useful local information.
Kevin and Mary were so helpful and lovely and how handy to have them close by. They had so many interesting stories to tell.
Mayo is the most stunning county. We went to Achill Island and swam in the sea at Keel where the sand is white; we also had a great seafood supper there at the Chalet restaurant. We saw dolphins at Malranny, ate the most delicious home baked scones and bread at Yvonne's Cottage, met oyster farmers whilst out foraging for muscles, went to a Gaelic football match at Castlebar and visited Westport House with all its adventure activities.
We were overwhelmed with the beautiful scenery all around - the view from the house alone is spectacular. The house itself was warm with a modern open plan kitchen - it ticked every box for us.
Ireland and its people are truly amazing - we will be coming back.
