Interaction with Guests
I have traveled a lot myself and stayed with people all over the world so am aware of travelers needs and what makes for a good experience :)
I can easily provide you with loads of local information re swimming spots, where to find the best food and local entertainment, tours etc.
I am often home though do go away at times.
When I am away I have a friend who lives nearby who manages the house so she can help with anything you need :) When I'm home I am happy to give you space or share meals and hang out depending on how much work I have or how our schedules work out. I'm also up for dropping people into town when I can, taking people to the river for swims when time allows and will invite guests to dance classes and other events whenever possible :)
The Local Area
This really is the best part of town! It's a quiet neighbourhood and just out of the town center enough to be relaxed, without being too far away.
There are loads of great cafes nearby and all you will need including a bakery, butcher, lots of options for yummy food - sushi, Thai, Chinese, an Asian grocer, bottle shop and a small supermarket all a 3 min walk away.
The bigger, cheaper supermarket, post office and chemist are about a 10min walk away.
The Botanical Gardens are just up the road, free and well worth a look! The Tanks Arts Center is also within walking distance and has lots of great exhibitions and events (I've seen some great music there!)
There are 2 bush walks you can do close by - a 1hr return trek - The Red Arrow, and and 5hr return trek - The Blue Arrow.
There is supreme bird watching down the road at Centenary Lakes - I saw Pelicans there recently! We have Rainbow Bee Eaters out the front of the house, Sunbirds, Kookaburras and more and a good bird book for people who are interested, and we get Green Tree Frogs and Birdwing and Ulysses butterflies in the back yard :)
There are 2 bus routes close by that run every half hour or more to/from the center of town at the Lake St Terminal/Cairns City Mall. You can catch a 130,131, or 121
I have 2 bicycles for you to use for free :) It takes 20-40min to ride into town and you can do most of it along the coast.
Walking is also a good option as there is lots to see. You can walk into town, along the coast in under an hour.
A taxi to/from the airport or into the town center costs about $18 each way. Airport pick ups and drop offs can sometime be arranged for $15 each way, depending on the time/s and our availability.
There is plenty of parking if you have a car.
The tours for the Great Barrier Reef all leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal at the Pier in town. You can head in in any of the ways listed above, or arrange for some of the tour operaters to pick you up from the old post office just around the corner from the house.
Other Things to Note
As with most tropical destinations there is dengue fever in Cairns. You would be highly unlucky to get it but we like to do everything possible to avoid it anyway. It is good to bring some insect repellant containing DEET (don't worry if you can't as we always have some here) and avoid the stripey day time mosquitoes which are the only ones that carry the virus. Thanks to science 84% of the dengue mosquitoes in this area are no longer able to transmit dengue to people.
The usual basic respect and cleanliness. Please pick up after yourself and leave the house as you found it. You break it, you fix it. Please turn off all lights/power points/etc at the wall when not being used. We have solar panels on the house so conservation is key :) No smoking inside. Pets are ok so long as they are house trained, reasonably quiet and don't chew things they shouldn't! You can come and go as you please but must be respectful of others - i.e. keep it down when others are sleeping. Back door key stays in the back door. Please shut the windows in the big room and lock the front and back doors so the house is secure when you go out. Please do not bring strangers home. Respect my things! You are welcome to read any books in the bookshelf - just leave them in the same shape you found them in :) Thank you
Great place, quiet . Lovely host. Would recommend to travellers .
Staying at Sophia's was as easy and straight-forward as it gets: a great host who makes you feel comfortable the moment you walk in, very experienced with guests. We enjoyed some good conversations, and the house is located in a nice and safe neighborhood, close to Botanical Gardens. Another couple was staying at Sophia's place during our visit and we had a great time with them as well. Definitely recommended.
Sophia was an outstanding host, I would stay here again without hesitation. She agreed to host me on a very short notice and provided everything I needed for my short stay. It is a charming older house, clean and tidy with a with a porch, pool and lots of tropical trees out the back. Well equipped kitchen allowed me to whip up a dinner quickly. The definite highlight of my stay was seeing the sun come up trough the palm trees while sipping my tea next to the pool in the morning. Thank you Sophia for your hospitality and great conversations. Till next time ;)
Great place to stay, friendly host. Close to all Edge Hill venues and Botanical Gardens.
Sophia's place is really homely with a great outdoor space for chilling out. Sophia was incredibly warm & hospitable despite her busy schedule, our last minute booking & late arrival
A bit North of town so recommend you have your own transport or are happy to bus or bike around town
*This is the 2nd (smaller) of 2 rooms at Sophia's place - it was great to be able to book both for 3-4 guests
Sophia has nice little space in Edge Hill in a convenient location. I got around easily with one of her bikes, buses, a lift from Sophia, and walking. Highly recommend Botanic gardens just down the road! Sophia had a beautiful fruit salad with the most delicious combination of fruit for breakfast the first morning, and had various other healthy teas and food options ... It's great to share ideas with health conscious people and Sophia knows a lot about good nutrition. Sophia gave me a lot of handy information and choices about what to do in Cairns.
Small downfall as there were others staying in the other room, it got a little noisy in early morning one night when some people were getting early flights, and accidentally slamming doors at 2am and 4am.
Sophia really was very helpful and really did in so many things to make my stay as good as possible,
Sophia is lovely, made me feel at home & very comfortable, as i am older & was on my own. It was a nice stroll to my art workshop week at the Tanks in the Botanical Gardens. The only downside of this AIRBNB stay is there are two rooms & only 1 bathroom to share
