My office is private though if you need something scanned/printed I am happy to do it for you :)
I have traveled a lot myself and stayed with people all over the world so am aware of travelers needs and what makes for a good experience :)
I can easily provide you with loads of local information re swimming spots, where to find the best food and local entertainment, tours etc.
I am often home though do go away at times.
When I am away I have a friend who lives nearby who manages the house so she can help with anything you need :) When I'm home I am happy to give you space or share meals and hang out depending on how much work I have or how our schedules work out. I'm also up for dropping people into town when I can, taking people to the river for swims when time allows and will invite guests to dance classes and other events whenever possible :)
The Local Area
This really is the best part of town! It's a quiet neighbourhood and just out of the town center enough to be relaxed, without being too far away.
There are loads of great cafes nearby and all you will need including a bakery, butcher, lots of options for yummy food - sushi, Thai, Chinese, an Asian grocer, bottle shop and a small supermarket all a 3 min walk away.
The bigger, cheaper supermarket, post office and chemist are about a 10min walk away.
The Botanical Gardens are just up the road, free and well worth a look! The Tanks Arts Center is also within walking distance and has lots of great exhibitions and events (I've seen some great music there!)
There are 2 bush walks you can do close by - a 1hr return trek - The Red Arrow, and and 5hr return trek - The Blue Arrow.
There is supreme bird watching down the road at Centenary Lakes - I saw Pelicans there recently! We have Rainbow Bee Eaters out the front of the house, Sunbirds, Kookaburras and more and a good bird book for people who are interested, and we get Green Tree Frogs and Birdwing and Ulysses butterflies in the back yard :)
There are 2 bus routes close by that run every half hour or more to/from the center of town at the Lake St Terminal/Cairns City Mall. You can catch a 130,131, or 121
I have 2 bicycles for you to use for free :) It takes 20-40min to ride into town and you can do most of it along the coast.
Walking is also a good option as there is lots to see. You can walk into town, along the coast in under an hour.
A taxi to/from the airport or into the town center costs about $18 each way. Airport pick ups and drop offs can sometime be arranged for $15 each way, depending on the time/s and our availability.
There is plenty of parking if you have a car.
The tours for the Great Barrier Reef all leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal at the Pier in town. You can head in in any of the ways listed above, or arrange for some of the tour operaters to pick you up from the old post office just around the corner from the house.
A $10 cleaning fee will be added to single night bookings.
As with most tropical destinations there is dengue fever in Cairns. You would be highly unlucky to get it but we like to do everything possible to avoid it anyway. It is good to bring some insect repellant containing DEET (don't worry if you can't as we always have some here) and avoid the stripey day time mosquitoes which are the only ones that carry the virus. Thanks to science 84% of the dengue mosquitoes in this area are no longer able to transmit dengue to people.
Sophia is fun to talk to and very supportive. The room and house are very nice and clean. It was awesome to be able to use the bike, it could easily get you anywhere in Cairns. I enjoyed my stay at Sophia's house a lot!
Sophia was a lovely host. Check in was easy, transport was close by, guest space in the kitchen for food, clean bathroom, and even use of the nice deep pool! I happily recommend Sophia's space to anyone traveling through :)
Pleasant, short stay in Cairns, good value for money.
The location is perfect, just a short bike ride into Cairns. The house is very comfortable and Stephanie is such a sweet host. I would highly recommend staying at her home when visiting Cairns.
I had a fabulous time at Sophia's simple but cosy little tropical retreat with a multitude of cafes and restaurants within 2 minutes walking distance. I had paid for the smaller room but Sophia generously let me have the larger room while it was unoccupied. She also gave me a lift to the Greyhund Station on departure. I can highly recommend her as a host, as well as her house/ location for a cosy and comfy stay in Cairns.
Sophia is very welcoming and the house feels like a friendly share house. Kitchen and bathroom are excellent!! Great bikes too, it's very easy to ride into town. I'd stay again.
Sophia is a fun, kind, and interesting gal who does all she can to make your stay as comfortable as possible. With the use of her kitchen, fast wifi, bicycle, and laundry facilities, I had all the amenities I needed. It was also great that there are grocery stores and good cafes within walking distance. Her home is very relaxing and she provides guests with as much privacy as they need/want.
Staying at her home made my time in Cairns something I will remember for a long time. Thanks Sophia!!
Sophia let me to have the whole house during my stay=) I enjoyed the cozy small room. The house is at perfect location to the Botanic Garden. City and esplanade is within 10 mins driving distance. Very convenient!!
I enjoyed my stay at Sophia's very much: big bedroom with a comfi bed, big bathroom with a strong shower, a very nice wooden kitchen and a wonderful garden to sit and relax. When I came back from Cape Tribulation, I stayed another two days at her house although she wasn't at home. The best for me was the bike I could use to go to the city, it gave me a big feeling of freedom :-) Thanks for all, Sophia!
A friend and I stayed at Sophia's place for three days and had a marvelous time. Sophia gave us a warm welcome - even though we arrived VERY early in the morning and was very easy going through out our visit. Communication was great and uncomplicated. The suburb of Edge Hill is sweet with the most beautiful Botanical Gardens to visit.
We would definitely stay again..
