We are a small and sincere home of international travelers who believe hostels are much more than a cheap place to stay. For us, it's about meeting fascinating people from all over the world, making lasting friendships, and creating community. We are very social here and will want to know something about yourself when you contact us by way of your Airbnb profile.

As fellow international travelers, this place is more than a hostel to us; it is our home. We strive to learn about the interesting people who choose to visit the great city of San Francisco. You can expect us to ask you the usual heap of questions: "Where did you come from? What do you do? How long you staying? Where you off to next?". We hope you don't mind indulging us with a bit of social chatter before we show you to your bunk. However, if you just arrived from some far off location and can hardly keep an eye open- we will work as quickly as possible to tuck you into your bed.

Our house is specifically designed to so that interaction with other guests is impossible to avoid; the shared dormitories encourage community and being social with your new friends. If you crave privacy or tend to be anti-social, you may find our "openness" a bit odd or not to your liking. We would love to suit everyone's tastes if we could, but we do understand if this concept is not the right choice for you.

We are also in a great location, nestled comfortably between the Financial District and Chinatown, a stone's throw from the iconic Transamerican Tower, and stumbling-home distance from North Beach's vibrant bars. We are on a major bus line and roughly 5 blocks from the Muni/Bart station. Although we are a small hostel, we do a good job providing the amenities and services of the larger hostels, except with a personal touch. You would never confuse our wee hostel with a "flashpackers" and we're not even close to resembling an institutional (aka impersonal) hostel.

Yes, our kitchen will only accommodate a few people at one time, but rest assured that it's modern, fully stocked and some amazingly yummy food comes out of there. We routinely invite our guests to join us for community dinners. Our bathrooms are clean and modern, even if the plumbing on the inside is over 100 years old! Our beds are the sturdiest bunks in the world- custom made for backpackers with powder coated steel. These beds will not squeak or shake and there are large backpack/suitcase sized storage lockers underneath (99cm wide by 45cm tall by 60cm deep). You can use your own lock or buy one from us. And, of course, we have free wi-fi and high speed internet available.

San Francisco is chock full of things to do, of course. And, since we do a bit of traveling ourselves, we know budget is key. We definitely will not push a bunch of expensive tours and tickets on you. We are happy to point you in the direction you seek- armed with a map.

We are in the business of getting to know people. If you think this unique hostel is right up your alley, we invite you to come spend some time with us. Happy travels, and welcome.

  • We had a lovely stay here. The location (just next to chinatown/ in the financial district) was absolutely perfect for exploring all parts of the city. It is an extremely relaxed setting where guests, staff and volunteers sort of blend together, making it feel more like a close community of friends keeping a house rather than a house run by employees, which was a very cool vibe. There are lots of younger people staying here and the environment + locks on every entrance door made us feel very secure. Everyone here was extremely friendly and helpful and clearly cared about making the hostel run as smoothly as could be. After checkout they even kept our bags for us so we could spend the day in San Fran. Definitely make sure you are comfortable not having your own private space, because the only place you will be alone is in the toilet stall. The beds were sturdy, clean and very solid, but Saturday night we woke up a few times during the night because of people rolling in late from being out. Only other con is that some floors can smell slightly funky from so many pairs of shoes, but the hostel seems attentive to this because they offer free sock-washing services ;) You will also not want to forget flip-flops for the shower. Otherwise, a safe and comfortable place for an easy-going traveler looking for a good deal. We would definitely come again!

  • This was my first stay in a hostel so I didn't know what to expect but my experience was very good. The Staff was friendly along with the area kept very clean. The only complaint I would have is that the bed wasn't very comfortable but then again this isn't the Ritz Carlton. :)

I would not hesitate to stay here again my next trip to SF.

  • The hostel is very small but it's clean and the staff is very friendly. I liked this hostel much more than the HI hostel in San Francisco, it is a more social place, great for meeting new people. The only thing I didn't enjoy so much was that that it is quite a climb to get there and there is no lift but luckily a staff member helped me with my bag.

  • This was my first airbnb experience I came to town on the Boltbus which was fabulous even though it only travels to limited locations. Let me not digress after my arrival I was given the house rules and tour of the living quarters. I was reminded that it was a communal environment so I took that to heart an meet a number of people who were welcoming from different places. I am an early riser so early to bed I shared the space with 3 other people as it is co-ed with our own bunk beds with storage underneath that was convenient and appreciated. I had enough clean bedding and warmed by the covers provided. I will stay this being my first experience in a hostel it was really different I didn't sleep a wink not because just being in a unfamiliar space...overall I would do it again.

  • Great place. Clean and warm welcome.

Sadly snorers are coming unless this a shared room, only 2 nights out of 11 without snorers.

  • The people at Pacific Tradewinds were so kind to me! From Henry to Rasmus to the rest of them! I literally got to meet people from all over the world in one place! From Japan, Hong Kong, Ireland, France, Germany, and Mexico. The list goes on! I felt so safe and secure there and the location was so convenient! If I have a chance to go back to USA and San Francisco, I would definitely choose this place again if I am there on vacation! Thank you for everything! =)

  • It was an absolutely fantastic experience staying at the pacific tradewinds hostel. Even though I was travelling alone, I never really felt so once I got here, since there was always someone around to strike a conversation with, or simply just sit and chill. Its pretty much always brimming with energy. The staff is extremely friendly and always willing to go one step ahead to help. Its a really clean and well maintained place, take the dorms, the common areas or the bathrooms. I would definitely head here on my next trip to SF and would recommend others to do the same :)

With the help of some really good friends, I have been operating my hostel for 20 years now. I'm passionate about creating community and enjoy creating environments where new friendships can be easily found. I surround myself with people who have this same vision so you might receive a reply form me or one of my friends. We believe people in the world have more in common with each other than they think, and we like working to find the social connections between people. We also operate from the premise that most people are inherently shy someone to help start the conversation and make introductions. The communities you will find under my profile operate with this basic premise in mind. We particularly enjoy people that have something good to offer the world and we like to learn how they are striving to make the world a better place. We always want to know about that special thing that makes you a unique contributing citizen of the world, so don't be surprised if I ask you a few questions about yourself. We also appreciate people who are willing to compromise their habits and routines for the good of the community We think international travel and friendship is vital to our survival on the planet. We think everyone should visit some far off place they have never been at least once a year. While there, people should strive to find the common interests and connections with their fellow human beings. Our golden rule in both houses is "Be Excellent To One Another." By the way, the photo is me in Santorini, Greece. I look forward to meeting you.
