Violet's home stay was fine with regards to the friendliness, flexibility and ease it was working with her and her assistants. We did have some structural problems, such as water, drainage, some water bugs and room temperature (the first night was extremely hot and stuffy which made it hard to sleep). Internet is provided though at a fee. Laundry was also available at a small fee and done diligently. I was not so clear about the breakfast. The first mornning we were offered a continental breakfast but after that the food was not prepared for us. We ended up eating out the majority of the time at cafes, etc. Though Violet did try her best to attend to her needs and even allowed us to tag along with her to a new years party and cooked us Swahili food, which was fantastic. I would recommend her despite the sevice and infrastructural problems, which I hope over time can be improved.
Violet is a very friendly, kind and well travelled lady. She will help you plan going to the beach and into Mombasa. This is a good option if you want to make Kenyan friends and don't want to stay in a fancy beach hotel. Piki pikis (motorbikes) will take you to Nyali Beach which isn't too far away...
Our stay at the house was comfortable. The room was clean as were the sheets, towels. etc. On arrival the driver was there as promised and the rate was acceptable. House is too far from the beach to walk so the best option is a tuk tuk since the cabs are rather expensive. Motorbikes are the best bet if you don't mind riding on one. Best bet for the beach is go to the hotel, Violet will tell you which one and for a flat rate you get lounge chair and use of the pool facilities. Violet is very nice and accommodating and knowledgeable for all your excursions and needs. Breakfast was provided although one morning by the time we got down to eat everything was gone and no one was around. I advised Violet and the next morning there was ample food. Internet was not working when we arrived but was fixed promptly. Overall a nice stay.
Violet is a phenomenally friendly person and a very accommodating hostess. She helped with all the transport to and from the house, and provided all the commodities needed.
The house is quaint and spacious. It is only a five minute boda-boda ride to the beach and has a convenience store close by.
I highly recommend staying at Jay's Nyali homestay instead of any of the Mombasa hotels, it feels significantly better both ethically and for your wallet.
