About this listing
Minutes away from the Downtown Mall, UVA, Darden, and Barracks Road - this house is the perfect place to stay when you visit C'ville. Available for short or long-term stays, this lovely master suite with private bath has the amenities of a hotel with the comforts of a home.
This spacious, private room with a private, attached bathroom is the ideal way to experience life in Charlottesville. Whether you're here for a vacation, visiting the University, or considering moving to our small city, a stay at this house on Rugby Road will give you a sense of what it might be like to live here.
Furnished with a queen-sized/pillow-top bed, antique dresser, chaise lounge, and a small eating area, this peaceful space has everything you need for a restful stay.
There is a mini-fridge and coffeemaker in the room and coffee and tea supplies are stocked for your convenience.
Everything you'll need during your stay is contained within the room: including a full, private bathroom, mini-fridge, coffeemaker, and beverage supplies, located in one of the double-doored closets. There are common areas of the home that guests are welcome to visit: comfortable living room and side patio. Access to the kitchen, dining room, and laundry may be possible in certain circumstances - please check with me prior to making your reservation to make an arrangement to use these areas!
Interaction with guests
We may not cross paths during your stay as I am not generally in the upstairs of the house - I like to allow that space for guests and long-term tenants to use. My personal space is on the lower level of the house accessed by a private entrance. My schedule is varied and I am often on the go; you may see me about the house but more likely out in the yard, wrangling goats! I respond quickly to text messages and am happy to offer any assistance that may be needed. In my experience, most guests prefer their space - my goal is to never hover but be available when necessary. Don't hesitate to contact me during your stay!
In addition to the Master Suite, there is a second suite upstairs which might be occupied by other guests during your stay.
My two goats, Harvey and Edward, are tenants of the yard and love interaction, if you should be inclined to visit them during your stay.
Other things to note
Check-in is anytime after 3pm. I always appreciate knowing when you intend to arrive but I've set things up so that self-check-in will be a breeze. If I am not on-site I will be available by phone, should you need assistance. Check-out time is noon. Because I accept one-night/last-minute reservations I need to allow enough time to turn the room for the next guests. Later check-out times are available upon request (advance notice preferred), providing there is not an incoming guest.
While you are renting a private room, the common areas of the house (living room/side patio) are shared with other guests and myself. Please be considerate of the presence of others when you are occupying any part of the home outside of the master suite. Please also be conscious of noise levels, particularly when arriving/departing at an early or late hour. Access to the kitchen, dining room, and laundry may be granted on a case-by-case basis but you must obtain approval from me prior to your arrival. Please see my other listing Fernwalk Garden Apartment, which is a spacious, self-contained apartment within the house, ideal for couples and families looking for more privacy, room to spread out, and access to a kitchen. Pets are not permitted in the master suite Comfort, Convenience, and Charm.

In addition to managing the rental and maintenance of this beautiful house, which has been in my family for nearly 50 years (!), I bartend at a great local restaurant, and I keep two Nigerian Dwarf goats as pets - Harvey and Edward, who I refer to affectionately as "the boys". They are great entertainers and helpful, if somewhat lazy, ecologically friendly stewards of the yard. They are also the subject of a children's book I am writing.
My father bought this house on Rugby Road while he was a student at UVA in the 1960's. It was his favorite place to be and I am passionate about restoring the house and grounds as a way to honor his memory. My wonderful and talented partner, Tim has been instrumental in helping me tackle my long list of projects and improvements. We have a son, Jake, who was born in June of 2016.
