The Neighborhood

The village (pop 3000) is a very colourful collection of homes and small quaint (URL HIDDEN) can spend several days wandering, hiking, cycling or just watching the world go by in the local plaza, sampling local cuisine from vendors or restaurants. Santa Maria del Oro is also home to a community of Huichol Indians. They are known for their bead work, and yarn paintings. A large crater lake with homes and restaurants dotted around its shore. Is nearby. The lookout for the lake , 2.5 miles, or 6 kms out of town also has a great little Mexican restaurant where you can while away a leisurely lunch. The local artists sell wares each weekend.
The local outdoor track field also has a great range of outdoor, free gym equipment for the exercise junkies.

Getting Around

The village is small and walkable with many hiking or biking options.
A Van-taxi service between to Tepic City, runs all day long, along with a local van-taxi down to La Laguna, the splendid crater lake , lavishly coloured by natural minerals, for swimming, picnicking,and/or birdwatching ; migratory birds and butterflies abound. Or just relax, enjoy fresh fish at one of the restaurants that dot the lakeside, and enjoy a local tipple.

Other Things to Note

Twitchers will be delighted by the range of raptors and other local and migratory birds.
This agricultural village is quiet and in general life is lived in daylight hours.
