Description

The space

The cottage is ideal for a couple or individuals who are looking for a comfortable, attractive place to stay.. There is a comfy queen size bed in the bedroom as well as a futon in the living area which can be used as a bed for one adult or two small children. The cottage can serve as a retreat, a romantic getaway or a place to stay for parents and grandparents who are coming to visit their children and grandchildren. Designed by the architect owner, the space is flooded with soft, natural light via a skylight which spans the length of the building.

Visitors to U.C.Berkeley will have an easy commute of about 20 minutes. A bus stop is located only a short 2 blocks away. A bus to San Francisco stops there as well. Alternately, one can catch the bus to the Berkeley Bay Area Rapid Transit station, which is the best way to get to San Francisco without a car on BART

Guest access

Guests will have access to the gardens and both outdoor sitting areas. There is ample off-street parking right in front of the cottage. The owners' home is located at the back of the property so guests approach the cottage first and not through owners' yard. There are views from the cottage and gardens. Walking along the ridge of the canyon behind the property is also a pleasant activity. Views are abundant in every direction.

Interaction with guests

Guests may be entirely private or may choose to interact with the hosts, who enjoy meeting and socializing with visitors.

The neighborhood

Our property is adjacent to the town of Kensington, which has a quiet village feeling. There is a village shopping center about 1 mile away which contains a grocery store, the Inn Kensington Restaurant, a very nice family style restaurant with excellent food, a Thai café, the Country Cheese Store, which has specialty cheeses, coffees, ice cream and assorted other treats, and The Arlington, which is a deli/café. There is also a liquor store, specializing in fine wines, Mechanics Bank with ATM, a nail spa and an Ace Hardware. Across the street is a gas station. All within a 1/2 hour walk or a 5 minute drive.

The neighborhood is a safe, friendly and comfortable place to live. Most residents have been here for 20 or 30 years. The owners' house has been on the property since the 1920's when it was built by the original owner.

Getting around

There is a bus stop within two blocks from the cottage where one can catch the #7 bus to Berkeley. It typically takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the downtown Berkeley BART station where the train to San Francisco and other destinations may be gotten. A quick car trip down the hill to the El Cerrito Plaza BART station takes about 5 minutes. There is also the H bus to San Francisco which stops here. By car, it is a quick 7- 8 minute trip to the freeway, and we are conveniently positioned between the Bay Bridge, which connects to San Francisco, and the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge, which connects to Marin County and San Francisco via the Golden Gate Bridge. It is an easy trip of about an hour, or so, to the wine country. Shuttle bus service from either San Francisco International Airport or Oakland Airport is available to the property. S.F. Airport and Oakland Airport both connect with BART as well.

Other things to note

Although we generally do not serve breakfast, we do provide juice, coffee, tea and milk. In addition, there is oatmeal, granola and cold cereal available in the pantry. Guests are also offered Kent's famous Banana Rum Bread. For a special treat, at an extra charge of $15, a hot breakfast of either Creme Brulee French Toast, which is truly delicious, or Egg, Sausage and Cheese Bake may be arranged. For special occasions, sparkling wine and chocolates may also be ordered at additional charge.

This place is wonderful! The location is great and the place is nice and tidy. Also, Kent went the extra mile to make the place feel welcoming. Specifically, Kent knew we had our two kids with us so left toys out for them and left freshly baked scones for us (they were delicious)! We will definitely be looking to stay here again on our next trip to the Bay Area. I would recommend this place to anyone - you will be glad you stayed here!

This cottage is high in the East Bay hills and "off" the beaten path. But, it was a short 7-8 minute drive to restaurants, stores and Tilden Park. This is exactly what I was looking for for a weekend with my daughter. We slept so well because it was nice and quiet. The cottage was stocked with everything you might need and even fresh scones!

Kent is an amazing host and Skyacre cottage was a beautiful base to explore the Bay area and Napa. The space was very comfortable, clean, tastefully decorated, well equipped and peaceful. We enjoyed "coming home" to such nice space every night after a full day of exploration. Birds songs was the morning call... we loved Kent and Skyacre cottage.

Response from Kent:
Monica and her children, Emily and David, are a lovely family and very easy to host. They were pleasant and respectful of the property. They took advantage of many of the activities available to them in the area and seemed to enjoy the experience immensely. They are welcome back any time. Thanks for coming Monica!

This is a very nice place to stay while being in the Bay Area. The cottage is very clean and well appointed. A little bonus we hadn't expected was the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, oh and the homemade scones were very good, also. Overall we highly recommend a stay here, I'm sure we will be back!

I highly recommend Skyacre Cottage for anyone visiting the greater Bay Area. It is located all the way at the top of the Berkeley/El Cerrito hills on a secluded property in a lovely area just on the border of the beautiful Wildcat Canyon which extends north of Tilden Park. While it is high up the hill getting around is easy from there with Oakland, Berkeley and Marin County all close by. There is a bus nearby going into downtown Berkeley and a BART station at the bottom of the hill in El Cerrito. The views are spectacular. The cottage itself is very bright, cheerful, clean and very well-stocked. There are two sitting areas outside which I appreciate. Be prepared for fog in the summer especially in the mornings. The owners were friendly, helpful and responsive. I hope to visit again soon.

I rented this place for my parents and brother who were visiting the Bay Area from oversea and they were really happy with the place. The place is very well-kept and well-equipped with everything you might need! The area is very nice and quiet, also the bay view is magnificent from just a short walk from the house. Kent shared some delicious scones with us (with reheating instruction!) and kindly walked us through the house when we checked in. There were notes everywhere inside of the house too to help with any potential questions. Very comfortable space for sure and the host is very thoughtful and kind. Definitely recommend!!

My husband, Dan, and I have been living in our house since 1976 and had been renting out our separate cottage since the 80's as a long term traditional rental. We feel very fortunate to have been able to live here in this special place and now would like to share it with as many other people as we can for as long as we can. It is a joy to meet so many interesting people from all over the world! My husband is an architect, and I am a retired social worker with 4 grown children and 5 grandchildren. I was not expecting to begin working again as an innkeeper, but I love it!
