The space

Bahía Rica Fishing & Kayak Lodge is at Punta Cuchillo, Paquera on Costa Rica's west coast. We can accommodate up to 11 guests in our artsy wooden house. We are renting out the rooms in the house as a Bed & Breakfast.
The house has 3 rooms, and you SHARE a kitchen and the bathroom with other guests. Each room has a double and a single bed. We also have a separate small cabin that accommodates 2 persons (the "bamboo room"). You still share the bathroom with the other 3 rooms.
Be aware that the guesthouse is based on a hill, and to get down to the beach area and breakfast area you have to walk a LONG stairway (256 steps). So if you have issues walking stairs, this would not be the place for you.
Bahía Rica kayak and fishing lodge is based on the properties of La Nicoyana a small private nature reserve. So it is very pristine. At Bahía Rica we live close to the nature and take pride in protecting our surroundings.

Guest access

The guest house has two balconies with nice hammocks, a little library and some board games. There is a small kitchen if you want to cook for yourself, or you can order DINNER from us (We do NOT cook lunch). We do home cooked meals on request.
From the guest house (and the bamboo room) you have to walk over 250 steps to get down to the common area close to the beach - but it is well worth it as we have our own tranquil beach with palm trees.
We offer several tours as well:
Sport fishing
Sea kayaking
Bioluminescent night kayaking (when there is no full moon)
Sunset & Full moon kayaking (during the week of full moon)
SUP - Stand Up Paddleboarding
Boat tours to Isla Tortuga with snorkeling
Boat tours to Isla San Lucas (the prison island)
Snorkeling and monkey boat tours
Whale and dolphin watching tours

Interaction with guests

Bahia Rica is a small family run place, and we typically hang around with our guest and have meals together.
We are a Norwegian couple. We decieded to follow our dream and settled in Costa Rica in 2007 to start up our fishing and kayak lodge.

The neighborhood

Punta Cuchillo is a small non touristy village, but we are conveniently close to the ferry and buses.
It is a safe neighbourhood, and you'll get a feel of a typical Costa Rican lifestyle. Since there are very few people living here we still have an abundance of wild life. Prepare yourself to meet monkeys, anteaters, skunks, armadillos, butterflies, bats, parrots and a lot of other wildlife.
We also have pets on the property; Bella our dog, 4 cats and some neighbor dogs that likes to hang around here.

Getting around

We are based 1,5 km from the Paquera ferry landing.
There are buses leaving several times a day from there, and you will always find a taxi there as well.
The little town of Paquera (8km from the guest house) has all the basics; grocery stores, pharmacy, ATMs, restaurants, gas station etc

Other things to note

Breakfast is included in the price.
Options for other meals:
1) There is a small kitchen in the guesthouse so you can cook for yourselves. Be advised that the closest grocery store is 8km away, in the little town of Paquera
2) We cook dinner on request (please check with us as it is not available every night)
3) Pizza delivery
4) Casa de Manito - a local restaurant 5 min walk from our place
5) Go to one of the resturants in the little town of Paquera
(There is also a small restaurant close to the ferry landing that is open until 4pm - only 1,5 m to walk)
6) Have a fancy dinner at Isla Chiquita. The island is located right in front of us and you can get there by renting a kayak from us, or order boat pick-up from the restaurant

Amazing time spent here. The hosts are wonderful people, and the property is picturesque with many places to relax and take in the scenery. The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful, you'll start your day feeling full and satisfied. I would love to stay here again on my next trip to Costa Rica.

Bahia Rica was wonderful! Vigdis and Thomas welcomed us in with warm hearts and we felt like we were staying with old friends. The snorkeling trip with Jeff was amazing and the bioluminescent bay kayaking tour with Eddie was unbelievable! Make sure to have dinner with Vigdis and Thomas too, great food and even better company. Thanks again!

During the four days we spent at Bahia Rica we enjoyed nature, the beautiful quiet private beach, and the friendly hospitality of Thomas and Vigdis. Breakfast and dinner were delicious and ample. We almost felt like family in the company of the hosts and a few locals. The bioluminescence kayak tour was a magical experience with the bonus of seeing a full starry sky above. The stairs kept us in shape and provided the opportunity to watch (and hear!) howler monkeys up on the trees in their natural environment. We also enjoyed the beautiful ocean view from the balcony. The calm water of the beach for swimming was perfect for us, not being fans of big waves. Tortuga Island was somewhat too commercialized and touristy for our taste. But the tour itself was very nicely done and we were treated like royals. It included the opportunity to see natural islands, spider monkeys and local fishermen from the boat, snorkeling, a beautifully prepared fruit snack and a delicious lunch of freshly caught fish. We very much appreciate our experience in the dry season at Bahia Rica and consider going back for a wet season experience!

There is a HOT WATER SHOWER!!!!! This was the first hot water shower I'd had in Central America for a couple of weeks, total bliss and pretty good views too..! Overall beautiful place. The views from the tree house are absolutely stunning. Vigdis and Thomas are warm and welcoming. I was expecting a bit more of an impersonal resort type feel to the place but it isn't at all. It's situated very close to the ferry landing but do take a taxi, the road is steep and narrow. The choices for breakfast are all great - I recommend trying a different one each day:-) I did 2 excursions while I was here, both of which were fantastic. The bioluminescence is magical. It was so strong you could just sit on the beach and watch it in the waves but the night kayak made me feel like I was in a different world. The boat trip was also well worth doing, the snorkeling was fab. I ate with Vigdis and Thomas every night as I didn't have a car to go to the nearest restaurant. Again I was expecting something a bit bland and generic but you get a proper full flavoured yummy home cooked meal, great value!

Vigdis & Thomas created the most wonderful home away from home for our first trip to Costa Rica. Their kindness and expertise - plus incredible meals and friendly staff - helped us explore all the hidden gems of the peninsula. I have a feeling it won't be long until we are back at Bahia Rica!
