This victorian home has had a long storied history since its construction around 1858. It was once the home of the famous Nelson photographer, William Tyree. For the last 18 years this home was run as a B&B under the name Te Puna Wai. It is now called Te Whare Rangi which means heavenly house or place of peace in Māori.

The space
This is a great place for anyone who would like to unwind, relax and take in the unsurpassed views.

That being said, Abel Abode doesn't have the views that the other rooms do but it's just a short walk up to the second floor where you can sit on the veranda or dine outside in the garden!

The one thing that Abel Abode has over all the other rooms is a bathroom with dual shower heads so you can shower with a friend or loved one without being cold half the time! ;-)

Lastly, although you're welcome to use all of the facilities in the second floor kitchen, you also have a mini-fridge in the room for your convenience.

My home sits facing picture-perfect Haulashore Island which was formed by the creation of the new harbour entrance (aka The Cut) in 1906.

On the other side of The Cut, the naturally created Boulder Bank begins its 11km snake to the north. Tasman Bay and the Abel Tasman National Park fill in the center. The Tasman and Arthur mountain ranges dramatise the west.

Guest access
All guests have a private, lockable room and can access all the public areas in the house. These include the kitchen, the living room and the verandah—all on the second floor.

Also accessible on the second floor—in the hallway between the living room and the kitchen—are a digital baby grand piano and an acoustic guitar which you are welcome to play whenever they are free.

The outside areas accessible to all are a small deck with a table, just off the kitchen and a table with 4 chairs on the brick patio down a short path from the kitchen.

Other things to note
There are two separate units on the ground floor where you will be. In addition to the Abel Abode, the Tasman Suite is located through the door to the right just as you enter. The only shared space on the first floor is the entryway. Both rooms have locked doors.

Each room has a Google Home Speaker, a SmartTV and a connection to super fast WiFi with unlimited data.

The flat screen LED TV is mounted on the wall and swivels so that you can position it any way you like. You can access Netflix, YouTube and a variety of other channels.

The Google Home Speaker, like the Amazon Echo, is a personal assistant that can answer your questions and perform tasks like setting an alarm or a timer. Best of all, you can access Spotify (to play music or other content), whether or not you have your own Spotify account. And if you do have an account, you should be able to access your own playlists.

In addition to this room, I have these 2 other rooms here at Te Whare Rangi. You can see them by Googling:

Tasman Suite @ Te Whare Rangi
Puna Perch @ Te Whare Rangi

Abel Abode and Tasman Suite can be combined for an additional 5% discount.

My home is located in Brittania Heights which is 2.2 km (1.4 mi) away from the Nelson town center. Beautiful Tahunanui beach is only 1.8 km (1.1 mi) away and a lovely walk along the waterfront. Abel Tasman National Park is very accessible, allowing you to do a day hike and return the same day. The entry point is Kaiteriteri, about 60 km or a 1 hour drive away.

The renowned waterfront dining strip is than a 10 minute walk away and features Harbour Light Bistro, The Styx Kitchen Bar, Nahm Thai, The Boathouse Society (a local secret) and the renowned Boat Shed Café. You’ll also find Haven Fish & Chips and, for an awesome range of fresh raw seafood, Guytons.

I'm an inquisitive, philosophical, adventurous, athletic guy. My interests include psychology, philosophy and spirituality, a strong affinity for the outdoors and a passion for books, film, music, art, biking and hiking. I'm fairly new to Nelson and acquired this beautiful home in May 2018. I was attracted to Nelson, and New Zealand, because of its natural beauty, its friendly people and its easy way of life. Before moving here I was a resident of California where I spent over 20 years living in the San Francisco Bay Area. My last home was in Sausalito, California where I first began hosting on Airbnb. That was short-lived for a few reasons which were out of my control, but I enjoyed the experience. I have been a frequent traveler and stayed in Airbnbs all over the world. Given the state of the world, I'm trying to sort out what my future plans are (like so many other people). Initially, I'd planned to "chase summer" for a few years, spending 6 months here in New Zealand and then traveling or visiting the US for the other 6 months. Looks like I'll be here as long as I can stay. I would like to gain my residency one day but I'm still a visitor despite the fact that my one and only home is here in New Zealand! One of my favorite things to do here in Nelson is get outdoors for some fun and adventure so, if you're up for some hiking and/or biking, I'd love to hit the trail with you!

During your stay
I hope to greet all of my guests when they arrive but, if that's not possible, I will do my best to check-in with you at some point to make sure everything is going well. I am always available by text or phone if you have a question or something comes up.

I am going to be starting school in February 2019 so I may have less time to interact but before then, I hope to share a hike or a bike ride with those so inclined.
