We are a mountain retreat, high on the ridges of the Coastal Range on the Pacific south west of Costa Rica.
Our sustainable way of life is based on bioagriculture, alternative energies, reforestation, art&crafts, horses and holistic health practices.

The Space

Marga´s and Chema´s home is a large elegant two storied round building with a geodesic dome on top for holistic practices. Large living room with fire place. Private bathrooms in every bedroom. Dining room with forest and ocean view from 1000 m above sea level. No grid connection, solar panels, light by candles. Spring water from the property.

With over 20 years experience in sustainable practices.
Large biological farm with organic garden and fruit trees. Thoroughbred horses a cross between spanish Andalusian and costarican Paso Fino.

Caters to naturalists, equestrians, holistic groups and sustainable practice seminars. Property is adjacent to Biological Corredor "El Paso de la Danta". Rural road to the beach by four wheal drive 12 km away.

Many rivers and waterfalls in the area. Primary tropical forest with breath taking views.

So, what is a sustainable way of life? It is a friendly relationship with nature, where the "cost of living" is directly related to minimizing environmental impact and a true economy based in frugality, reciclying, craftmanship, growing your own food and avoiding consumerism.

Breakfast is included with your stay, other meals are available with an adittional cost. Please let us know if you like to have this service prior to your arrival. All additional services are payed in cash.

A rural road for 4x4 conects to the beach and the nearby Marino Ballena National Marine Park 12km away, which has the arrival of humpback whales twice a year, also a large variety of dolphin make their home all year arround in these waters.

Due to our isolated location and the ammount of things to do in the area, we recommend a minimum of two nights stay.

Their is a public bus every day except Sundays to a nearby village 3 kms from Casa Tordesillas. And a local taxi to bring you up to our place. Please advise is this service would be needed.

One can also participate in the voluntary hands-on sustainable practices, which are Margas and Chemas way of life. Some of these practices are organic farming, reforestation sustainable energies and horse care.

  • Chema and Marga are wonderful people!
It was quite a trek to get to their home but don't get me wrong, this was part of the adventure and the appeal for us. Marga met us at the bus stop and we took a taxi the remainder of the way to their beautiful home. It was cozy, intelligently constructed and we felt removed from social, environmental & technological pollution. It was a breath of fresh air (literally and metaphorically).

Chema took care of the large and small details of our trip: he was extremely responsive and when I asked a question twice he was so patient! He helped us arrange our taxi pick up, helped us pre-purchase bus tickets, arranged our cabin at the beach in Ovida, and gave us great recommendations on how to spend our time. Chema is an encyclopedia! He is extremely intelligent and enlightened!

Marga made us clean and delicious meals! The chicken was fresh, her keel salad was scrumptious and her lasagna was unbelievable. On our plane ride back to Toronto, Rafal and I voted her lasagna as our favorite meal for the 2 weeks we were away in Dallas and Costa Rica! Marga's energy is lovely and once she opens up, you realize how intelligent and wise she is.

Our rooms were comfortable and we enjoyed the fresh air when we opened our windows. We enjoyed the candle light, it was peaceful and charming. Even their dogs had amazing energies :) The fireplace was peaceful and well received with the combination of cool mountain air.

We highly recommend staying with Chema and Marga, and suggest spending at least 2 nights as its a trek getting there. We also recommend the hike to Ovida and staying at Five Senses cabin by the beach (all recommendations from Chema). Thank you so much for taking such good care of us Chema and Marga, we felt we had great parents watching out for us!

Just be sure to confirm the price on airbnb as they (Airbnb) made an error, and we were lucky to have enough US on hand to pay the difference.

    Thank you Shivon,
We are so glad that you had such a good time, also, it was a pleasure to meet you and it was a shame that the time was so short. Hope you can come back and stay longer. The next time we can show you Ventanas beach, with its caves and shooting jet streams and maybe do some more hiking through the coastal ridges.

  • Well, I have just spent a week on the sustainable farm of Chema and Marga. I can only agree to the very positive reviews of other guests and in particular the assessment of Patrick.
There are a lot of nice, stylishly designed guest houses with professional operators, also more and more in costa rica.
But it is very rare that these places are filled by the personality and weight of their owners. Chema and Marga practice for many decades the now present sustainable lifestyle. Their finca and their life is the daily practice of an "alternative lifestyle".
In particular, Chema allowed himself, from his rich life experience and acknowledgement, to look at things, processes and developments different, much more complex than usual.
For me it was a great pleasure and honor listen to chemas assessments and agree.
And it was fun, to help with the tomatoes.
I am sure, that these will grow as well as the many ideas and plans of Chema and Marga.
    Muchas Gracias y Pura Vida!

  • Chema and Marga were amazing hosts. With an environment and stories to last a lifetime, we were elated every day we woke up. Marga's cooking was the best food we'd had in Costa Rica, while Chema showed us the amazing environment including countless waterfalls and an amanzing hike towards Uvita beach.

For anyone looking to discover themselves again, find a serene sustainable place to stay, or just get away from the hustle and bustle of the world, Chema and Marga's airbnb is the spot to be. I'd want to keep this place all to myself and a secret, but that'd be doing it a huge injustice. This is the place to be to enjoy the jungle, the beach, the waterfalls, and ultimately great company and an unbelievable time.

  • Chema y Marga are truly amazing people. Chema is insanely knowledgable about Costa Rica, Spain and world history in general. Chema and I spoke for hours on end about anything and everything - great conversations. Marga is probably one of the best cooks in the central region of Costa Rica. Her ability to use local, organic ingredients and tailor meals to specific requests by her guests is amazing.

Between walking (hiking) down to Uvita (12KM), riding horses, helping mulch on a small reforestation project and learn oodles about sustainable living, I'd recommend this place to anyone who is curious about alternative lifestyles (alternative compared to western) or interested in an adventure.

One of the best parts about their home is that it is very quiet. I had time to reflect on my past year, slow down my mind (meditation, Do-In & Yoga at Casa Tordesillas almost comes natural) and strategize goals for 2013. When you want quiet, you have it here - when you want conversation, you can have that as well.

    Pura Vida,

    Ryne O'Donnell

  • Chema and Marga were wonderful hosts! Marga, true to other reviews is an amazing cook. Every meal was fantastic and healthy! Chema is a wonderful conversationalist and very interesting to talk with! He provided us with a wonderful horse ride on his beautiful and well trained horses. Their two dogs "Mumbles" and "Gypsy" are friendly and welcome a head pat and attention. I highly recommend a stay at their home!

We are native from Madrid, Spain. Residing in Costa Rica since 1976, following a sustanable way of life. We offer holistic health and sustainable practices seminars. We also offer horse back riding for experienced riders and nature hikes through the tropical forest and to the local waterfalls and pools. For us to have a guest is a way to share our way of life, to promote a sustainable life and to make friends. Our main object is two fold, first is to simplify our way of life by practicing sustainable techniques and regenerative activities; second is to be minimizing our impact on the planet, that is, that our ecological footprint would be less and as we see it, is about quality of life instead of standard of living.
