Pick up from the Manta airport on request $ 15
Santa Marianita is 20 mins south of Manta. Manta has a very active and friendly expat group. We meet twice a week and all are invited.
The location is great for exploring the coast, meeting expats, or just relaxing and enjoying the peace of the beach. Owner is open to yearly rental.
Have access to washer and dryer
Interaction with Guests
We tend to be extremely friendly. Many long lasting friendships have developed here. My pets are as friendly as my guests.
You can walk the beach at night. No locks, bars are needed. Quiet beach
Welcome to come to town with me when I'm going in or for a culture experience try one of the pick up trucks to the central market for $1.00... Also have reliable drivers that you can hire that speak English for $10.00 per hour.
Other Things to Note
Pets are welcome.. Sorry no children..
Linda and her staff at the Donkey Den Guesthouse went out of their way to make myself and Richard feel very comfortable, from our first meeting until our last day on the beach. The room was just as pictured with all the amenities stated and more. The neighborhood was wonderful and Linda introduced us to some very wonderful people. Some were guests and some lived in the area. Linda has the best breakfast on the beach and on Sunday everyone gathered for a good time of great food and conversation.I want to thank Linda, her assistant Cheryl, and everyone associated with the Donkey Den Guesthouse for having us and we hope to see you real soon.

This is a lovely, quiet, funky beach resort. The rooms are very comfortable. Staff serves wonderful, very inexpensive breakfast ($2-3) & coffee at a communal table where you can participate in lively discussions. As others have said the conversation tends to be negative about the locals and the U.S., but hey, these are expats. What else would you expect? There is a cooler and honor system for cold drinks.
The staff is friendly and accommodating. The owner, Linda, has a big heart and puts a lot of effort into making this a gathering place for expats and does her utmost to help you feel comfortable, sometimes arranging small tour groups. She helps you get taxis, sometimes giving you rides, herself.
There are a LOT of animals. That's only good or bad, depending on your preferences.
The location is 20 min south of Manta. There are many food options on the beach tiendas, that are very good (Dom Willy's seems most popular). Next door, at Matt's Marianita's, there is great food, good company, excellent drinks, when they are open.
My girlfriend and I just spent a month at Donkey Den in the Molly suite which we found to be comfortable, clean and private.
The owner Linda is a great hostess and seemed to really care about our Wishes. Her managers Dan and Stefani were very professional and attentive to our needs and responsive to any requests.
This is a perfect place for those looking for some peace and quite or a great wind surfing location. However if you don't like the wind, cats, or dogs you should go somewhere else. It is also somewhat isolated as it is a $10, 30 minute taxi ride into the stores of Manta.
The two things we didn't like we're the mosquitoes and the grouchy old handyman Mike. He is an unfortunately unhappy man who actually threatened me with physical violence for asking Linda a simple question about her power generator---an invitation for which he is very lucky I didn't accept.
Just stay clear of Mike and you should really enjoy your time there.
Linda's place is very laid back and restful. Good place to meet other expats. I would return again!
The Donkey Den Guesthouse sits directly on a long brown sand beach 20 minutes south of Manta. It is a lovely spot, looking out on a kite school, fishing boats and (with Binoculars) Humpback Whales breaching. The Guest rooms are large, very comfortably furnished with hot water showers and well equipped kitchen, WiFi and Sat TV. Fresh towels on request and laundry as well. This is a well designed place and still plenty funky enough to not feel like an overpriced hotel.
Sleeping to the sound of a rolling ocean is wonderful. You can cook for yourself or drop down to the open air dining room for a wonderful breakfast of eggs, yogurt, muesli, juice and coffee or just ask for the wonderful (website hidden), pure water and wine available by glass or bottle ($$$)...coffee free all day.
The staff (2 young managers from Netherlands one from Canada, and 2 local women for cooking and cleaning) are really great and provide wonderful customer service. The managers also provide plenty of useful information about the area and what to do.
All in all this was a very nice short stay place. The beach is actually pretty quiet, even on the weekend. No boom boxes all night was a real treat. The resident Dogs (5 at last count) and cats (2 + 1 new kitten) are foundlings and make sure you are very welcome. If you don't mind them sitting at the table with you, you will love them. We did and they got lots of pets from everyone.
Our say was marred by having a nagging head and chest cold so we slept a lot. Otherwise the beach would have had us both in it often.
The only problem we encountered was a prevailing sense of distance from local people. It is by design and the attitudes expressed by the "gringos"( NOT THE YOUNG MANAGERS from Europe and Canada) toward Ecuadorans is pretty dismal. They constantly put locals down and even though they, like all of us, have had negative experience with locals, they almost seem to thrive on talking about "THEM".If you believe in being reasonably respectful of other cultures and wish to mix with and learn from them, this may not be the beach place for you.
This one thing is what kept our 3 star rating from being 5 stars.
This is the perfect beach getaway. With an attentive and hospitable hostess and beautiful suites, this is truly a destination which soothes the soul and provides a restful location. It is worth noting that if you do not like dogs and cats this is not the place for you. Cats that plop on your lap and dogs that come up for a pet and are always ready for a walk on the beach. Thanks Linda, I'll definitely be back.
I meet Linda as she so graciously met me at the airport to take me to her lovely guest house. What a wonderful and caring lady with a great big heart. Was there a week and she had an amazing staff catering to all our varied needs. Everyone at the house made my trip feel like I was apart of one big happy family, sharing stories and laughs as we hung out together. It was a very memorable experience, one I will not forget. Even all her dogs and cats joined in on the fun!!!
Thanks Linda, guests and all the staff....till we meet again
