The space

**This is a quiet home best suited for quiet guests. If you're a partier or you like to stay up late and be loud, my place isn't for you!**

My Castro home features a larger-than-a-hotel master suite -- yes, you have your own private bathroom - and includes some extras to make your experience a little more luxurious!

-- Your own PRIVATE bathroom attached to your bedroom -- only you have access (I have my own)
-- Large, quiet room in the back of the house, away from street noise
-- Brand new, extremely comfortable queen sized mattress bed (For European guests, that is 152 cm x 203 cm)
-- Keurig coffee maker in the room
-- mini refrigerator in the room for your drinks, etc.
-- Free, unlimited street parking
-- Free, good wifi
-- Free local and long distance domestic phone calls
-- 5 min. walk to Castro/public transportation; central SF location; 10-15 minute walk to the Mission, Haight Ashbury, Noe Valley; and about 20 min. to Golden Gate Park.
-- Beautiful views of Kite Hill, Eureka Valley, & Twin Peaks
-- To lighten your travel load, I provide shampoo, conditioner, hairdryer, facial soap, body wash, shaving cream, razor, body lotion and other amenities.
-- iron and ironing board
-- Very homey and comfortable feel
-- breakfast cereals provided - also in the room (milk in the mini fridge)
-- 2 mellow cats included - but they are NEVER allowed in the guest
bedroom (even when you're not here) in case you have allergies.
-- Private access to backyard w/table & chairs
-- Book basket: I have several books available for you to read or take with you. If you want to drop one off, that is great, but it's not necessary.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD - NOTE: the house is on a hill so if you aren't comfortable walking up and down it, my suggestion would be to take Lyft. I can send you a discount code if you don't have it yet! Just shoot me an email.

You will be staying on 17th Street - the closest neighborhood is the Castro -- a 5 minute walk to Castro & Market, where most major MUNI lines (K,L,M,T,S and historic street cars) converge. The location is smack dab in the middle of SF which means you are also walking distance to a variety of other awesome neighborhoods including the Mission, Cole Valley, Golden Gate Park, Haight Ashbury, and Noe Valley. If you don't want to walk - the central location makes cabs affordable. It is a 15 minute trip to Union Square (including the walk to MUNI stop), a 20 minute drive to the Golden Gate Bridge, about a 20 minute drive to Fisherman's Wharf or 30 minutes by MUNI.

There is a great selection of restaurants, bars, and shops that are all walking distance from the house. The Castro Theater - complete with a Wurlitzer organ player - is just a 5 minute walk. Some of the great restaurants just minutes away from the house include Frances (winner of several awards, including a James Beard award), Anchor Oyster Bar, and Chow (a casual, neighborhood restaurant that has something for everyone). The next neighborhood over, only about a 10-15 minute walk, is the Mission which features some of the best restaurants in the city.

The bedroom is spacious, quiet, and serene, and is decorated with local artists' work. It features a private, en-suite bathroom. The queen-sized Posturpedic bed is brand new and has comfy linens including a down comforter and both firm and soft pillows. Relative to the rest of the house, this room gets less light but still has two windows and plenty of lighting in the room.

Set in the back of the house, the room is very private and quiet-- you basically have the whole back of the house to yourself, including private access to a cute, intimate backyard where you can sit after your day (or during your day!) and use the barbecue to make dinner. (I love to barbecue and I can show you how to use it).

Your stay comes complete with two beautiful and extremely mellow cats, Roger and Hank! However, the cats are never allowed in the guest bedroom and most guests with allergies have reported that they had no reaction during their stay. They take some time to warm up to others and often tend to disappear when guests arrive.

The house is newly renovated, very clean and cozy with a modern feel and lots of light. It's on the top floor so I have a nice view of Twin Peaks and Eureka Valley which is especially pretty at night. The kitchen, living room, backyard, and washer/dryer are available for guests to use. Note that the bedroom does not have a TV, however, the wifi can get you connected on your laptop.

I've lived in San Francisco for 18 years I am not exaggerating when I say that I am in love with this city. I know the city very well and can help guide you to destinations that are worthwhile (and those that aren't). I hope you will grow to love San Francisco as much as I do.

By far the best way to get here these days is to take Lyft - it's about half the price of a taxi and it's door-to-door. The prices range but it's usually anywhere between $20-30. If you don't have Lyft on your phone, shoot me an email and I'll send you a discount code (I have a relationship with Lyft). A cab is about $55 including tip. You can take BART (public transportation) to the 16th Street Station or Civic Center (approx. $8 per person, one way). I suggest you take a cab from there (approx. $7.00) because my place is on a hill which is quite steep at a couple points - you don't want to be lugging your bags up the hill although many guests have done it. SuperShuttle is a "shared ride" airport shuttle that transports several passengers and is cheaper but generally takes longer ($18 for one person; $28 for two).

Guest access

NOTE: Unfortunately I CANNOT accommodate early check ins and late check outs or because I am booked most nights and need the time to prepare the room for the next guest. In addition, I'm no longer able to accommodate guests who want to drop their bags off early or leave them after they check out. Please do your best to make your travel arrangements align with checkin time!

In addition to your bedroom and bathroom, you will have access to the backyard which is a tranquil outdoor space (see photos) with a meyer lemon tree. Nice to relax and have a drink after a day of sightseeing.

Interaction with guests

I enjoy chatting with the guests, but I'm usually busy working. Even when I'm not busy, I'm very respectful of privacy and never want people to feel like they are forced to interact with me. Depending on what I have going on, my availability changes. I don't eat meals with guests but I enjoy occasionally hanging out when our schedules align. However, if you're looking for a social outlet by staying here, you're likely to feel disappointed, so please take that into consideration.

The neighborhood

The Castro is a vibrant neighborhood with lots of restaurants, coffee shops, and the amazing Castro Theatre. It's also a safe neighborhood. While historically a gay neighborhood, that is changing now. Everyone will feel welcome in the Castro, I can assure you. While homelessness is a problem in SF, you won't see that near the house. It's only when you get to Castro & Market that you'll notice it. The fact that I live on a hill is a deterrent!

This is a great choice if you have a car!! While most SF neighborhoods require a parking permit in order to park for any longer than two hours, my neighborhood has NO TIME RESTRICTIONS for parking so you can leave the car for as long as you want. The only caveat is street cleaning which happens on Wed. 12-2 (on odd side of street) and Thurs 9-11 on the even side).

Getting around

These days I recommend to my guests that they use Lyft to get around. It's cheap and extremely efficient. You don't have to wait around for more than a few minutes once you order a car. With Lyft Line (picks up other passengers) you can get from place to place for about $5. So worth it! Plus, then you don't have to walk up the hill! If you don't have Lyft on your phone, I can send you a link that will give you a discount.

This neighborhood is also very convenient for public transportation. The underground train is a 5 minute walk down the street (Castro Station) that can take you downtown in 10 minutes. Also there are the historic street cars which will take you to the Ferry Building and Fisherman's Wharf. My neighborhood is in the center of SF, making it extremely accessible to other parts of the city.

Other things to note

My girlfriend Lisa often stays at the house while guests are here. She also helps with my hosting responsibilities so you can usually ask her questions when she's here.

Other times, I may go away for a couple days. If I do, I'll let you know ahead of time.

Noise travels between spaces so I ask that guests to not wear shoes inside and to be mindful of this if they come home late.

Also, the cats are never allowed in your bedroom so I ask that guests keep the door closed at all times.

FIVE STARS! This is a gem. The area is pretty, and the location is convenient. I work downtown in Embarcadero, and my commute was 30 minutes door-to-door :-) Also, if you like a good hike and don't mind hills, you can hike up Twin Peaks from here. The view is very much worth the hike.

This is my favorite place to stay at ever! It's comfortable, cozy and clean. The location is perfect for me to get into work in SF. The only downside this visit was that Chris was traveling; I really missed the conversations we have! Wonderful experience as always!

That was my best Airbnb experience so far. The room with private bathroom was big and perfectly clean. We slept very well. Chris provided really everything. The bathroom was fully equipped and there was a small breakfast. Thank you so much. You made us feel like home.

Chris User ProfileChris is a superhost.

Hello! I've been hosting since 2011 and was recently named a SuperHost. Getting to meet new guests everyday -- and the trust inherent in that process -- brings me a lot of joy. While I'm originally from the east coast, I moved to San Francisco 22 years ago and it's my home now. San Francisco is heaven on earth -- a magical place with a collective spirit of diversity, creativity, and open-mindedness.

I'm currently getting a PhD in sociology at UC Davis. My recent research has focused on elites and education, and currently I'm researching women in high tech. I'm also a freelance photographer for a textbook called Seeing Sociology and I write as freelancer as well.

I love movies, mostly independent films and documentaries. My favorite films are The Station Agent, American Beauty, and, most recently, Boyhood. My favorite documentary is Baraka.

Travel is pretty much in my blood. I sometimes just have to get away to spark creativity. I have driven across country twice. I've been to Cuba, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia and, most recently, Japan. I love meeting new people and enjoy hearing about people's lives. So I hope we will have a chance to talk while you're here!

I love good food too. I do some cooking, but I'm better at knowing where to get good food in the city.

I'm a big music fan as well - in fact I have a guitar here you are welcome to play if you know how since I sure haven't been using it lately. I am also up on the best venues to see music in the city if you're interested in that.

In terms of my style as a host, I tend to be pretty attuned to my guests' needs. I can usually sense if they need my help with things, in which case I am always happy to provide any guidance. I like to give guests plenty of space to have their own experience here, so you won't find me being overbearing and asking for your time. I'm pretty quiet and spend a lot of time in my room reading or working. But I do love to have chats with the guests to find out where they've been that day and how they liked it, and particularly if they tried any of the recs I provided.

The bottom line is I love to have guests in my home. I love hearing about their experiences. And I also respect that they are here to do their own thing.
