(Please read this description and then scroll down to read information on our rates.) We have a gorgeous 3,000 square foot, Craftsman-style home built in 1910 in East Nashville's historic and trendy Lockeland Springs neighborhood, just a few miles from downtown Nashville. The neighborhood is charming, with coffeehouses, restaurants, clubs, a health food store and art galleries, all within walking distance. You can catch a bus to downtown a block from our house. Park your car on the street in front of our house. The private room we offer is upstairs, has its own beautiful bathroom with a ventilating skylight and an antique clawfoot tub with a sit down hand-held shower fixture. The room also has a small outdoor balcony and internet access. We provide bagels, OJ, and coffee/tea in our spacious kitchen for you to prepare or you can bring in your own food. You are free to use our washer and dryer. Our home has many distinctive architectural features, an eclectic art collection, a wonderful music room with a Kawai piano and a half-acre yard and deck surrounded by trees.
We are politically-progressive musicians who play in an acoustic Americana band, Shelby Bottom String Band (check our our East Nashville Rag video on YouTube.) We are especially interested in hosting musicians and like-minded people who want to explore a different side of Nashville than the usual tourist haunts. We really enjoy hosting people from other countries. We have hosted visitors from England, Ireland, Germany, Australia, Italy, France, Sweden, Belgium, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain and elsewhere. East Nashville was identified in USA Today on 4/16/13 as one of ten "Best Neighborhoods in the Country that the Tourists Haven't Yet Discovered." Come stay with us and we will help you discover its treasures. Please look over the 250+ positive reviews we have received!

Interaction with Guests
We will usually be present during our guest's stay. We will interact with our guests as little or as much as they want. If guests are musicians, we often have an informal jam with them in our acoustically vibrant music room. We have a beautiful Kawai piano and many acoustic guitars in our music room.
We live in a walkable neighborhood with sidewalks, interesting old houses, 5 coffee houses, restaurants, several music venues, art galleries, a boutique shops, and a health food market. 5 Points and Walden, two neighborhood centers, are a 10 minute walk from our house. We provide guests with a menu book of East Nashville restaurants. We are 3 miles from Lower Broadway in downtown Nashville where all the honky tonks are located. We can steer you to the sites in our neighborhood where the TV Show "Nashville" is filmed (e.g. the homes of Deacon, Gunnar and Scarlet.) Beautiful Shelby Park, with the Shelby Bottom Greenway along the Cumberland River, is a close drive or walk from our house. We encourage guests to experience the unique culture and vibe of East Nashville -- a neighborhood known for its many musicians, artists and other creative types.
A bus runs a block from our house to the downtown hub. It costs only $1.70. Lots of street parking in front of our house. We are 15 minutes from the airport. Lyft or Uber are available from the airport to our house (around $20) or to downtown (around $5.) We can give you information on these. You can rent a bicycle for $5 a day in 5 Points.
Other Things to Note
We have taken visitors with us to musical events or favorite restaurants that are off the beaten track. If people want to get a feel for the "real" Nashville, we will direct them to informal jams that are frequented by locals. We also enjoy conversing and sharing our music when appropriate.
No pets. No smoking. No drugs. Couples are fine. No unexpected overnight guests. Prefer friendly, responsible people. Since we are environmentalists, we do ask that guests conserve energy by turning off heaters, AC and lights in the room when they leave for an extended period. We do have central heat and air and these will continue to run when guests are absent. There is a window air conditioner in the room.
Beautiful, comfortable house and room. Nell and Michael were welcoming and knowledgable hosts who made us feel right at home. Great location- easy to bike or walk almost anywhere.
Nell and Michael have a beautiful home and made us feel very welcome. They were very hospitable and allowed us to catch up on our washing from the previous week's road trip. The room was the perfect base to settle in for a few days: lovely, spacious and with en suite bathroom (it was great having the bath). On the first night Nell was playing at a bluegrass jam at the American Legion. We went along and got a brilliant authentic taste of Nashville's music scene, off the beaten tourist track, which was really special. East Nashville was the perfect area to stay, full of hip coffee bars and restaurants, and our visit co-incided with the tomato art festival which had great atmosphere and bands playing all day long. Staying here really enhanced our experience of Nashville, thank you Nell and Michael!
A jam session at downstair was our welcome. Such a beautiful house with unforgettable colors, smells and sounds. It situated in a quiet area in which it pleasant to walk and go out for a dinner. We thank Nell and Michael for being so helpful and generous. Highly recommended.
Michael and Nell were lovely hosts and made us feel very welcome in their home. The room met all our expectations and was clean and well presented with all amenities available. The house was located in a beautiful historic heritage neighborhood with easy access to the city via bus or uber. Would absolutely recommend staying here and hope to visit again.
Nell and Michael were very good hosts who provided good ideas and insights into the Nashville area and music scene. The property is well located in a quiet area of East Nashville, with good access to local cafés and restaurants. Easy and safe parking outside the house and access into Nashville downtown via driving or local bus was easy. Room was good size and neat & tidy, only negative was no shower, with only the hand held in bath which was awkward.
Have to agree with over the 200 other reviews. Nell and Michael make you feel comfortable and right at home. The house being over a hundred years old has no unfavorable odors or smells. It's very clean. With the weather conditions outside Changing from day to day, inside the home was always very nice. If you have any disabilities: Due to the flights of stairs and having to climb in and out of the tub I cannot recommend this home. If you are also used to the fluff and fluff bedding, this is not your thing. Opryland Resort and down town are minutes away and driving the freeways are a pleasure. Different books are available listing the local night life and restaurants etc. And Nell and Michael always leave the light on.
Fantastic suggestions for food and entertainment. Their location was walkable between two fun areas in East Nashville. Very nice hosts. Made us feel welcome.
About the Host, Nell
My husband Michael and I are part of a community of musicians and progressive activists in Nashville. We live in the East Nashville, a diverse neighborhood. We play traditionally-based music and our political network stretches across the state. We enjoy sharing our home with others (we have frequently hosted parties and meetings here) and love showing people another side of Music City USA. Check out our band, Shelby Bottom String Band on YouTube, especially our East Nashville Rag video. It was all shot in our neighborhood. Just Google East Nashville Rag and it will take you to it. East Nashville Rag is also the title cut of our CD.
