Lovely large Craftsman home. Art, architecture & music in hip neighborhood. Musician hosts. Private upstairs room with bathroom, small deck & internet. Easy walk to bars, coffee houses, restaurants, parks. Close to downtown honkytonks & museums.

The space

Our gorgeous 3,000 square foot, architecturally-designed home, built in 1910, is one of the oldest Craftsman-style houses in East Nashville. Located in the trendy Lockeland Springs neighborhood, we are close to downtown and 5 Points, a popular neighborhood hub. We are musicians. We love hosting music lovers as well as visitors from other countries. Our neighborhood is charming, with coffeehouses, restaurants, music clubs, a health food store, a large park and art galleries within easy walking distance. The room we offer is upstairs. It is very private, has its own beautiful bathroom with a ventilating skylight, an antique claw foot tub with a European style sit-down hand-held shower fixture (see photo), a small outdoor balcony, a large closet and internet access. (We have been told by a few of our guests that the bathtub may be challenging for persons with mobility issues.) We provide bagels, OJ, and coffee/tea in our spacious kitchen for you to prepare or you can bring in your own food. You are free to use our washer and dryer. Our home has many distinctive architectural features, an eclectic art collection, a wonderful music room with a upright grand Kawai piano and a half-acre yard and deck surrounded by trees.

We are politically-progressive, acoustic Americana musicians who founded Shelby Bottom String Band (check our our East Nashville Rag video on YouTube. It was shot all around our neighborhood.) We are especially interested in hosting musicians and like-minded people who want to explore a different side of Nashville than the usual tourist haunts. We have hosted visitors from England, Ireland, Germany, Australia, Italy, France, Sweden, Belgium, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain and elsewhere. East Nashville was identified in USA Today on 4/16/13 as one of ten "Best Neighborhoods in the Country that the Tourists Haven't Yet Discovered." Come stay with us and we will help you discover its treasures and as well as the many attractions of Music City USA. Please look over the 300+ reviews we have received!

Guest access

Guests will have access to our big deck (off our kitchen) that overlooks our tree-shaded, spacious yard. We have a comfortable antique glider on our front porch if you want to sit and enjoy the streetscape. Guests can use our living room, dining room, half bath, kitchen and music room.

Other things to note

We have taken visitors with us to musical events or favorite restaurants that are off the beaten track. If people want to get a feel for the "real" Nashville, we will direct them to informal jams that are frequented by locals. We also enjoy conversing and sharing our music when appropriate.

Decent place when in a pinch. Uncomfortable bed. Sit-down-only shower was a little difficult to get used to. Perfect location. Close to the best bakery I've ever been to (16th Street Bakery - macaroons are to die for). Close to restaurants and some cool clubs.

Response from Nell:
Bridget's husband, Roger, is unusually tall. He told me he is 6'8". Our queen size bed has a footboard which we would have removed, except that it is part of the frame. We always ask our guests if they are comfortable and if there's an issue, we address it. As far as we were told, everything was fine. We want people to be comfortable here, and we do what we can to make that happen.

Great place, centrally located in the heart of Nashville. This 107 year old home is roomy and the hosts are very nice and informative about things to do in Nashville. The room is very quiet, even with their evening music sessions with their band - we never heard them. The room is up a flight and a half of stairs with a nice soaking tub. Just outside your room there is a small porch/deck to enjoy your morning coffee.

Great people! Loved the neighborhood with shops and restaurants and such nearby. Our room was fine . The private bath is a really nice feature. Close to downtown and all of that , yet in a residential area. Felt very welcomed there.

Nell and Michael are very talented, interesting, and congenial hosts. They made excellent recommendations for us about musical performances and restaurants (they are especially familiar with health foods). They also advised us about the best way to get around - when to drive and when to call Uber - based on how events in the area were impacting traffic. The room was clean and as represented in the listing. The bed has a firm mattress and the bath has a tub but no shower; there is a hand-held shower attachment. The room is upstairs, so don't bring bags that you can't lift! The neighborhood is lovely - full of craftsman and Victorian architecture, and we enjoyed sitting out on the deck just off the kitchen with a cup of tea and watching the birds and squirrels.

Interaction with guests

We will usually be present during our guest's stay. We will interact with our guests as little or as much as they want. If guests are musicians, we often have an informal jam with them in our acoustically vibrant music room where they will find a beautiful Kawai piano and a collection of acoustic guitars.

About Nell

My husband Michael and I are part of a community of musicians and progressive activists in Nashville. We live in the East Nashville, a diverse neighborhood. We play traditionally-based music and our political network stretches across the state. We enjoy sharing our home with others (we have frequently hosted parties and meetings here) and love showing people another side of Music City USA. Check out our band, Shelby Bottom String Band on YouTube, especially our East Nashville Rag video. It was all shot in our neighborhood. Just East Nashville Rag and it will take you to it. East Nashville Rag is also the title cut of our CD.
