The Space

We have a gorgeous, 3,000 square foot Craftsman-style home in the historic and trendy Lockeland Springs neighborhood in East Nashville, just a few miles from downtown Nashville. The neighborhood is charming, with coffeehouses, restaurants, clubs, a health food store and art galleries, all within walking distance. You can catch a bus to downtown a block from our house. Park your car on the street in front of our house. The private room we offer is upstairs, has its own beautiful bathroom with a ventilating skylight and an antique clawfoot tub with a sit down hand-held shower fixture. The room also has a small outdoor balcony and internet access. We provide bagels, OJ, and coffee/tea in our spacious kitchen for you to prepare or you can bring in your own food. You are free to use our washer and dryer. Our home has many distinctive architectural features, an eclectic art collection, and a half-acre yard and deck surrounded by trees. We are politically-progressive musicians who play in an acoustic Americana band, Shelby Bottom String Band (check our our East Nashville Rag video on YouTube.) I run a statewide organization and my husband works in health care. We are especially interested in hosting musicians and like-minded people who want to explore a different side of Nashville than the usual tourist haunts. East Nashville was identified in USA Today on 4/16/13 as one of ten "Best Neighborhoods in the Country that the Tourists Haven't Yet Discovered." Come stay with us and we will help you discover its treasures.

Guest Access

Guests will have access to our big deck (off our kitchen) that overlooks our half acre yard. They can use our living room, half bath, kitchen and music room. Our bedroom is off limits.

Interaction with Guests

We will usually be present during our guest's stay. We will interact with our guests as little or as much as they want.

The Neighborhood

We live in a walkable neighborhood with many interesting old houses, 5 coffee houses, 20 restaurants, several music venues, art galleries, bunch of boutique shops, and a health food market. We are also about 3 miles from Lower Broadway and downtown Nashville. We encourage guests to experience the unique culture and vibe of East Nashville -- a neighborhood known for its many musicians, artists and other creative types.

Getting around

A bus runs a block from our house to the downtown hub. It costs only $1.70. Guests can park in front of our house. Guests coming from the airport can take a taxi to our house, or public transit to the downtown hub ($1.70) and then get the bus to our house; or we can give them information on riding with Lyft from the airport. We are about 15-20 minutes from the airport.

  • Nell and Michael were very helpful and made themselves available to us to help us decide what to do in Nashville on our July 4th trip. Their home is beautiful in a very nice safe neighborhood. A one minute walk takes you to a couple of restaurants and a further eight minutes takes you to 5 points with a post office, stores, restaurants and music! You can walk home at midnight and feel safe! You can sit out on the deck at the back of the house and have breakfast bagels.

  • Nell and Michael and wonderful and generous hosts and I really enjoyed my stay in their charming upstairs room. Quiet street, comfortable bed, and a fantastic bathtub for soaking. The location is perfect with great food options nearby. Thanks Nell and Michael! I look forward to staying with you again in the future.

  • Nell and Michael were great hosts. They gave super tips where to go out for good music and food. Their neighborhood is friendly and relaxed and a hotspot for music lovers. The room is spacious and the little balkony was a nice place to drink coffee and read one of the plenty interesting books on the board. Thanks for the great stay!

  • What terrific hosts in Nell and Michael! Their home was lovely and so were they. I had a problem with transportation when I first arrived, and Michael went to bat for me to help get the matter successfully resolved. I enjoyed listening to them make music, and they helped me navigate my way around town. The accommodations were wonderful--everything you could want in a nice, relaxing place to stay in a great, quiet neighborhood! Thank you Nell and Michael!! Highly recommended :)

  • Lovely house in quiet safe neighborhood. Car required to get around. Good privacy in room with ensuite bathroom. Not having a usable shower was a disadvantage. Hosts very helpful both before and during stay.

    Response from Nell:

Actually a car is not required to get around. We have had a number of guests stay with us, especially Europeans, who did not rent a car. We have bus service one block from our house with buses going downtown to the hub where you can get free shuttles that take you to all the tourist haunts or get a bus that will take you to other parts of the city. We cannot put a stand up shower in the room unless we cut through the roof of the house. We have had hundreds of visitors who have used the shower/tub without complaint or problems. We understand that some water may get on the floor. We don't mind as long as the bathroom is not flooded, as has happened a couple of times, and the water is wiped up. My apologies about the CD. Response from Nell:

I think we had a misunderstanding Robin. We waited up until after 1 am for you guys to arrive at our house. When you arrived you were too tired for me to give you usual tour of the kitchen, including where the food is, how to make coffee, or tea, where the deck is, how the garbage and recyle works, etc. Concerning the shower, there is no way we can put a shower in our bathroom, as I explained, because of the pitch of the roof of our 103 year old house. In my description of the bathroom, we clearly state that we have a sit-down shower. Sorry again for the miscommunication. Nell

  • We had a wonderful experience with our hosts. They were warm, welcoming and super flexible, which we greatly appreciated! Their home is charming and there are wonderful restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance of the house that were delightful. We would love to return to Nashville and stay with them again.

About
My husband Michael and I are part of a community of musicians and progressive activists in Nashville. We live in the East Nashville, a diverse neighborhood. We play traditionally-based music and our political network stretches across the state. We enjoy sharing our home with others (we have frequently hosted parties and meetings here) and love showing people another side of Music City USA. Check out our band, Shelby Bottom String Band on YouTube, especially our East Nashville Rag video. It was all shot in our neighborhood. Just (website hidden) East Nashville Rag and it will take you to it. East Nashville Rag is also the title cut of our CD.
