About This Listing
One of the oldest Craftsmen homes in hip and trendy East Nashville. The upstairs room we offer is comfortable and private with its own bathroom and a small deck. Within walking distance of restaurants, coffee shops, boutique shops, bars and buses.
Because of the legislation that was just passed in Nashville requiring us to collect hotel and sales taxes, we have had to add $10 per night to our fees. Your payment will include all applicable taxes and fees.
We have a gorgeous, 3,000 square foot Craftsman-style home in the historic and trendy Lockeland Springs neighborhood in East Nashville, just a few miles from downtown Nashville. The neighborhood is charming, with coffeehouses, restaurants, clubs, a health food store and art galleries, all within walking distance. You can catch a bus to downtown a block from our house. Park your car on the street in front of our house. The private room we offer is upstairs, has its own beautiful bathroom with a ventilating skylight and an antique clawfoot tub with a sit down hand-held shower fixture. The room also has a small outdoor balcony and internet access. We provide bagels, OJ, and coffee/tea in our spacious kitchen for you to prepare or you can bring in your own food. You are free to use our washer and dryer. Our home has many distinctive architectural features, an eclectic art collection, and a half-acre yard and deck surrounded by trees. We are politically-progressive musicians who play in an acoustic Americana band, Shelby Bottom String Band (check our our East Nashville Rag video on YouTube.) I run a statewide organization and my husband works in health care. We are especially interested in hosting musicians and like-minded people who want to explore a different side of Nashville than the usual tourist haunts. East Nashville was identified in USA Today on 4/16/13 as one of ten "Best Neighborhoods in the Country that the Tourists Haven't Yet Discovered." Come stay with us and we will help you discover its treasures.
Guests will have access to our big deck (off our kitchen) that overlooks our half acre yard. They can use our living room, half bath, kitchen and music room. Our bedroom is off limits.
Interaction with Guests
We will usually be present during our guest's stay. We will interact with our guests as little or as much as they want.
We live in a walkable neighborhood with many interesting old houses, 5 coffee houses, 20 restaurants, several music venues, art galleries, bunch of boutique shops, and a health food market. We are also about 3 miles from Lower Broadway and downtown Nashville. We encourage guests to experience the unique culture and vibe of East Nashville -- a neighborhood known for its many musicians, artists and other creative types.
A bus runs a block from our house to the downtown hub. It costs only $1.70. Guests can park in front of our house. Guests coming from the airport can take a Lyft car to our house, or public transit to the downtown hub ($1.70) and then get the bus to our house; or we can give them information on riding with Lyft from the airport. We are about 15-20 minutes from the airport.
Other Things to Note
We enjoy meeting people from other countries and have hosted a number of foreign visitors from all over the world. We have taken visitors with us to musical events that are off the beaten track. We also enjoy conversing and sharing our music when appropriate.
No pets. No smoking. No drugs. Couples are fine. Prefer friendly, responsible people. Since we are environmentalists, we do ask that guests conserve energy by turning off heaters, AC and lights in the room when they leave for an extended period. We do have central heat and air and these will continue to run when guests are absent. There is a window air conditioner in the room.
Nell and Michael were absolutely wonderful. This was only my first Air B&B experience, but I can't imagine a better stay. Their home was so welcoming and beautiful. The bedroom in which my girlfriend and I stayed was perfect. Additionally, Nell and Michael made for great conversation. It's nice to stay with people who share interests and that can provide good suggestions for the city. I recommend them to anyone visiting Nashville. My girlfriend and I already want to return to Forrest Avenue.
Nell and Michael were super supportive hosts who helped me feel right at home for my first visit to Nashville and my second airbnb reservation. They are very friendly and it was loads of fun to chat with them not to mention hearing their music. I really enjoyed the charm of their 100 year old gorgeous house and the spacious room and bath, I love baths. The ability to leave a window open for fresh air was a treat. The neighborhood is a great location for walking to interesting spots in East Nashville and was not that far to drive to downtown venues. They made me feel very welcome. Thank you Nell and Michael.
Everything was exactly as expected. Great host, who offered great suggestions. Neighborhood was beautiful as well. Only down side is having to talk my girlfriend out of trying to make us move there :)
My husband and I decided to try "airbnd" for the first time and also tryout Nashville for the first time. Our expectations were not only met, but exceeded on all accounts! Michael and Nell were such nice hosts that I think we may have been spoiled for our first experience. Who gets their own private concert after returning back from a night of crowded bars and drunk crowds??? We did! I felt special to have walked in on Nell and Michael have a small jam session in their music room and not only did they play several songs for us, but they took requests!
Such a lovely couple with a lovely historic home in a fantastic neighborhood. My husband and I could not part with East Nashville; we went downtown for a few hours one day, but came right back to enjoy the uniqueness of this neighborhood with great eating spots and live music options as well. We ate and enjoyed cocktails at The Treehouse, Rumours, Two Ten Jack, Ten Sixteen, Basement East (nice music venue) and more. We also really had a nice morning at The Post for coffee and breakfast quiche. All of the above mentioned places we walked too from Nell and Michael's home! Fantastic location.
One day we drove our car to Grand Ol Opry for a show, but other than that we walked. We used Lyft once (if unfamiliar, ask Nell she'll tell you how to use it). Our Lyft ride cost about $8 to downtown.
So about our room, it was perfect. I took a bath every morning and slept until 10:00...a real treat for a working mom. We can't wait to come back; we may only do so on the dates that this home is available for us again.
I highly recommend this home for your stay, but please don't tell your friends because we want to make sure to get a reservation again ;-) shhh....
Thanks Michael and Nell, it was a pleasure!

The kindest B&B host we have ever met!
I felt a little bit worry about this 105 years' house first but felt great when we got there! Nice, clean, comfortable house!
The first day, Nell and Michael took us to listen the Blues, wonderful!
They are so kind during our 3 days stay there! Thank you very much, Nell and Michael!
Nell made us feel welcome by showing us around her house and letting us know if we needed anything that her and her husband were there to answer questions. The neighborhood was great! Was within walking distance of many restaurants close driving distance to a great park!
Nell and Mike made us feel at home from the instant we arrived (even with our late arrival after midnight). The bedroom itself was true to the photos: large, spacious, airy; the bed was comfortable. We found extra pillows and blankets in the closet, which came in handy. The whole house was clean, and we were given access to the kitchen, coffee-making tools, and even some bagels in the fridge.
Mike and Nell, both gentle and warm, each offered us guidance on places we could go on particular days of the week for excellent food and great music. Their recommendations were spot-on.
This neighborhood within East Nashville is a fun spot. (We chose to rent a car, and we were glad we did because it's pretty inexpensive here compared to most cities--and the car offered significantly more freedom and flexibility.) This home is in a neighborhood that is easily accessible by a short drive to downtown Nashville, the airport, and other spots we needed to get to. Walking and public transit might be bit more cumbersome, but probably doable. And local walks around the neighborhood, just for fun, were rewarding. (Definitely go to Sweet 16 for savory and sweet pastries, just a few blocks away, practically camouflaged like just another house. Amazing food!)
The only aspect of our stay that was non-ideal for our preferences was the lack of a standing shower. Bathing in the tub was a bit more of a chore.
We would highly recommend this Airbnb and the lovely hosts. (They are musicians with an interesting history and a gentle way.)
About the Host, Nell
My husband Michael and I are part of a community of musicians and progressive activists in Nashville. We live in the East Nashville, a diverse neighborhood. We play traditionally-based music and our political network stretches across the state. We enjoy sharing our home with others (we have frequently hosted parties and meetings here) and love showing people another side of Music City USA. Check out our band, Shelby Bottom String Band on YouTube, especially our East Nashville Rag video. It was all shot in our neighborhood. Just Google East Nashville Rag and it will take you to it.
